Title: Tedious...Tedious...
Post by: cobramk3 on December 03, 2002, 02:37:39 am
Hello,

I've noticed that going from planet to planet is incredibly tedious, as the ship moves/turns very, very slowly. It makes flying from planet to planet to do the "lander thing" tedious as well..

Which brings me to the lander..

You drop down, avoid stuff that threatens to blow you up, take the minerals and leave..

and you do it a billion times over! ....it takes *so* long to fly between planets that the process becomes incredibly tedious. :-[

Do you need to do this less as the game goes on? Do any upgrades from the shipyard help you move better in planet<->planet travel? (I'm not talking about combat)

I know this game has a great storyline..but I'm not sure I can take the planet<->planet lander trips that take *ages*...

Tell me there's a light at the end of the tunnel!

Thrusters increase your ship's speed.  Attitude Jets let you turn faster.  This works for both in battle and outside, when flying in Hyperspace or inside a solar system in Truespace.  Just stock full on both of those and you'll be set.

Thanks!!  :D

I have a new top priority.

Well, when you get a ship with good enough weapons, you can earn a decent living just blowing up other ships. Each Slylandro probe, for example, gives about 500 RU; they may be hard to kill now, but with enough upgrades you'll be able to destroy them without losing a single crew member.

I must say it is cool to see brand new players to this game.  People who haven't ever played it before, or those who wanted to but couldn't.  I just hope that early adopters of it won't be put off by the existing bugs.

Yeah, as someone said, you need to upgrade your thrusters before all else. But also, once you've mined for a couple of months, go on a mission (spathi or shofixti are good for first ones). On your way there, back, and in their home solor systems, fill up your storage bays. It will make things go a lot faster. Also, talk to the old Shofixti as early as possible, because he will tell you the location of a rainbow world, which you can sell the location of to the Melnorme. After which, you will have some credits to buy upgrades for your lander (i think with your 500 credits you can get to the upgrade which protects you from aliens).

Isn't it though ?  The bugs can be annoying, but I think the only one that has a serious chance of killing the game to people is that collision error at the end.  And maybe the one on my machine that makes me have to listen to *every* word the Orz say or else it freezes.  If I have to hear about peppers ONE MORE FREAKIN' TIME !!!!!!

Okay.....calm....centered.....love SC2......Love Orz Nemesis.......

So yes, the bugs are annoying, although the rest of the game is fun enough to compensate for most people  ;D

Although right now, the vague nature of the quests is killing me. Where's the Sylandro mothership? Who knows! Where's the Ilwrath homeworld? Got me! Errrg.

Since the gameplay doesn't adopt any previous paradigms, an FAQ about exactly _how_ one should be playing it would be very appreciated. I've looked at other online strategy guides, but they all take more or less the form of walkthroughs, and I'm not looking for specifics. Just, like, should I be cruising through all of Ilwrath space looking for their homeworld, with a million enemies constantly on my tail through hyperspace? Or is it pereferable to pace the quests, rather than rush headlong into them? That sort of thing.

Well if I might make a suggestion you look at a map (the one that comes with SCII if you buy it) from The Pages of Now and Forever (check the FAQ section). When I first played I was having problems finding the Ilwrath home world too and then I looked at it and realized their spear of influence has not only grown, but it's in different places. So, I checked the star clusters where it used to be and sure enough that was where their home world was located.

Talk to aliens a lot, and write stuff down. When you have bought all the tech from melnorme, buy information. They outline the plot quite well.

And if THAT doesn't work, there used to be walkthroughs all over the net.  Check the Pages of Now and Forever, or google for 'em.

Ah walkthroughs take all the fun out of the game. It's much more interesting to learn, for youself, that the Yehat help you at the end and that is the reason you keep losing (if you've playied the game already you know what i'm talking about). And to go exploring, only to find yourself deep in Ur-Quan space.  ;D

One thing I'd like to point out to wake (out of pity more than anything) is that if you're looking for the Ilwrath homeworld in the Ilwrath sphere of influence you're wasting your time. The Ilwrath do have a homeworld, but their sphere of influence has slightly moved from it for reasons outlined in the plot.

Yes, but the spear on the map (map that came in box not the one on the game) is the same as it was 20 game years ago. So the sphere, on the map I told him too get from The Pages of Now And Forever, will show where the Ilwarth used to live and so if you go there, you'll find their homeworld.

Ah. I thought he was just cruising through their sphere of influence.

Seems like digitizing the manual that came in the SC2 box would be a good idea.

I've got all these manuals in PDF form, they came with the bonus SC2 copy included in the SC3 package I've bought.

Also, the Ilwrath will tell you exactly where their homeworld is, if you talk to them enough.  I think so, at least.  I never actually went there (damn cloaking devices!).

The game attempts to place you into that reality.  It's not going to tell you what to do but you have to figure things out as you go.  This means as a first step talking to the starbase commander until you're blue in the face.  This also means getting a sheet of paper and taking good notes on interesting things you run across, like homeworld locations, and tasks that are suggested.  And when you encounter aliens, this means talking with them as much as possible, often making repeated trips.  Often times remember too that they'll relate stories and things that are important but are often not obvious (the Pkunk are big on this one).  Some of it takes a little exploring too.  The big thing to remember is to press your ALT key or whatever it is to review the conversations, read them, and think about what they're saying, and taking notes when you see "facts" about locations of items and home worlds and the concerns of the aliens you deal with (as well as how hostile they are).

Hope this helps.

While bumping a two week old thread wouldn't normally be a big deal, Captain Smith, it can be annoying when you bump multiple ones, as you are pushing more recent topics off the first page of the forum.

I hate to bring it up here, but you haven't registered so I can't send you an instant message.

That's one thing that always blew my mind. Trying to use the Umgah caster in every single system in Ilwrath space... only to discover that their homeworld is outside their bloody (no pun intended) sphere of influence.

*suppresses a giggle at the previous message and the notion of resurrecting this old thread*

I can just hear them shouting "Hallelujah!" every time you come to the board.

Hey, that would be neat - a ship that would die and then come back when a later ship died. Alone, it's not powerful. With others, it can get a second chance... Hmm...

I'll admit, posts are quickly disappearing off the first page of the forums, but there are more people posting than ever and I don't really mind reading a lot of the old posts.

Ahhh, the search for Ilwrath space... that's where a map with the game comes in handy.

Yeah, even though it does get confusing, it really isn't that much of a problem Parker, is it? I mean, you seem to be on everyone about this. Again, if we had a few more forums, it'd be easier, but this works as well. One just has to jump back and forth a bit more, and occasionally one loses a thread somewhere. Still ,that's life.

Also, this place is more active then when BioSlayer was around (and that was briefly very active :) ), which is good.

Considering I get in less fights now than I did when BioSlayer first joined, I'm very happy...  but now I have no scapegoat to vent my anger on.  I'll have to find some helpless, defensiveless newb to seek as prey.  He will feel the wrath of my mighty, strangling tentacles.  That poor, unsuspecting soul will be my slave and banished to a life of pain forever.

This coming from the guy with the Fot as his forum picture... lol.   ;D

Rockasaurus Rex is too nice for that kind of fate. I didn't keep track of Bioslayer very much, but I can kind of see why people would have a problem with him. I still say NEMT is far worse than anyone else that's ever posted here, but can you tell me specifically which topics he got in a fight with you and/or other members?

I'm just coming across NEMT's old posts, and I happen to agree with you... he does seem to come off as rather uncivil and condescendingly antisocial.

But anyways, I'm curious along with Shiver: what did Bioslayer do to incur your interminable wrath, Omni?

Well, if memory serves me right (and being enlightened, I'm fairly sure it does), you're the one that called his post a vacouos waste of space.... Suffice to say that while you didn't have any major fights, you were never really on good terms were you? He did take his ideas quite seriously, and you're style doesn't always go well down with everyone Omni ;)

I miss him though... Whenever you get to the Dnyarri topic he creeated Primat, you'll see why. We had such a lovely discussion. In more topics than one as well....

As for NEMT, he was just moving out when I was moving in, but he did have a wee bit of a SC3 issue. I don't think he got banned, he simply got bored and found somewhere else with people who felt the same way...
