Title: UQM v0.3 has arrived.. What do you think about it?
Post by: Krogoth255 on September 07, 2003, 11:40:42 am
I just downloaded UQM 0.3 so for I like some the improvements making it closer to remesible SC2. Such as now you have 50 savegame slots, 14 melee slots for each team. Everything loads up much faster thanks to a cleaner library making the overall gameplay more fludent. As far as stability I can't comfirm if it's better or not.

Rename yourself right at the beginning, then go get the moon base.

Now try it on 0.2.

Tada!!  More stable  ;D

Hehehe :)
Or try:
Cyborg melee actually works!

But seriously...you should have a much more stable experience with 0.3 over 0.2. A lot of crashes/freezes were fixed, as were some nasty memory leaks, so overall it's fabulous!

It's definitely better than 0.2. I like the restoration of the 2 extra ship slots per team in super melee. It just feels right.

What the "setup" in the menu does? When I press on it, it does a sound like a device that does nothing (most likely).

Thanks dev team... You guys just place perhaps one of the best part of SC2 back! The ending where the various races say their last words and stuff :) eventhough, there are no voices I just imagine them in my head.

A fantastic, well polished release.  The only problem I've had with it is forgetting to uninstall UQM .2 before installing .3, leaving me with a mess of data files.  I ended up deleting everything and installing .3 from scratch again  :P

I really really like all of the command line options, you can tell a lot of effort was put into satisfying both PC game players and 3DO game players.

Hey, there isn't a script for linux up. When I unzip the content zip, I don't find the executable. Am I supposed to compile the source, or what?

You are indeed.  Unix binary releases were more trouble than they were worth for us, and now that a number of distributions have actually made packages for those distributions, we've sort of given up on trying to do binary compatibility ourselves.

But if you're on Unix, we always recommend building from source.

Your content stays zipped, too, actually.  The source distribution should contain detailed installation instructions.

I have a quick question about melee, I did a quick search, and couldn't find anything, so I thought I'd just ask in here. Is it possible to change the way it zooms in on the ships? In the 3DO version it scaled smoothly in on the ships, which is how it works in UQM, but in the PC version it just sort of snapped in. If it can't currently be done, is it possible to be added?

If you're running Linux, using CVS is probably the most convenient way to update UQM, despite SourceForge's performance problems. You get the latest code (almost; anonymous CVS may lag behind by up to a day), all the content updates automatically, and the actual download is quite small. On a modem connection, it's the only decent way to update UQM.

If you have all the libraries, compiling UQM is just a matter of running a build script anyway, so there is little need for a binary release.

Hm. That may have been my problem. I tried anonymously CVSing into sourceforge, but couldn't connect.

Try again. And again. And again. Ten attempts should be enough. Some of the people around here write nice little scripts to retry connecting until it works. That server always seems to have n or n-1 connected users, where n is the maximum allowed amount.

You might want to try the cvs snapshots (source only, no content):

I think things no longer dissapear (which is good) but now the ships look very blurry at medium range (which is bad). :-/

I noticed the antialiasing too. I'm somewhat confused as to why it was done. Doesn't each ship have a graphic for small, medium, and large?

Yeah, but if you use nearest-neighbor zooming, small objects during the continuous zoom can end up disappearing entirely (this was particularly a problem for the Ur-Quan fighters).  Trilinear scaling was introduced to combat this.  The "-b nearest" option will let you turn that off.

Well maybe it is my computer but... Some critical special moves (arilou warp, utwig and yehat shield) now has a delay of 1/2 second!!! I mean I press to use it but it occurs only after 1/2. Anyone knows why?

Excellent job!

I could only find one "bug" when I turn on cyborg melee option in the main game, the melee becomes sooo fast... and the cyborg always loses. On the other hand, what's the point of playing the game without doing the battle yourself?

Good job on the ending sequence. I really missed those guys

It's supposed to do that. I think you can adjust the speed using the "resolve" option in the same menu.

Also, if you set the combat on cyborg when you're about to attack the sa-matra, you just jump directly to the end credits with all the cool aliens talking. I don't know if it's a bug, but if you don't have a lot of time and you want to see the end credits it's a cool thing...

It's supposed to do that, too.  In the original, if you were in Cyborg mode, then after you got through the guardian ships, the Talking Pet would say "You did it!  The Sa-Matra is defenseless!  Now all you have to do is fly up next to it and detonate the weapon!" and cue the ending sequence.

Where's the fun in that? I didn't even see the ships fighting the sa matra...

I guess this is good if you just want to see the ending, though.

Ever tried to use auto-aiming weapons on the Sa-Matra? They all try to hit the Sa-Matra, not the generators, thus reaching nothing. And in Cyborg-Mode, you'd have to program a special routine for the assault on the Big Trophy.
And would you bring in ships, that could be a real danger for the Sa-Matra? Just send in your Umgah Drones, Supox Blades, Earthling Cruisers, Thraddash Burners (?), Arilou'Lale Lay Skiffs or such stuff... Not fun for the Cyborg, but he must win, since you cannot reach the Sa-Matra again after leaving for fetching new ships (the Ur-Quan do know about the frog and will turn the Sa-Matra on to destroy everything in this region of space just to ensure that this dammit thingie will not survive (i guess, that's why the emergency warp system has been removed by the twin gods of excellent games).

Greetings,
Martin

OK... but does anyone know when the 0.3 mac version is getting released? Am getting a bit tired of checking the site every few hours.

Yeah, sorry about that.  The Mac version is "on my plate" (with much assistance from Mr. Death_999), and our day jobs are keeping us quite busy lately.  As such, we haven't had the time to put it together.  But I hope you'll be pleasantly suprised by the results once we do.  ;)

I'm hoping to put something together this weekend, time permitting.  But I know that does little for you with regards to "immediate gratification," and for that I apologize.

That's cool. I can do with version 0.2 till then, which is still playable as long as I save often. In fact I find the crashes useful - reminds me about things like sleep, food, work etc.

If you're OK with an "unofficial" build of the game for the interim, I've got one over here:

http://www.submedia.net/uqm/

(just between you and me, it's the exact same binary as will go into the "official" release, sans nifty packaging)

Enjoy.

Oh yea, very important thing. The key jammer problem is back. I really really hate it.

Title: Re: UQM v0.3 has arrived.. What do you think about

It never left.  Key jamming is a function of keyboard hardware, not our code.  Edit your new keys.cfg.

(I use the number keypad and the square braces, myself.)

Just figure it out, try other combinations, or use the old setup since that seemed to work for you.

The 3.0v is the "old" setup. At least that is what they wrote. Meaning, the 2v had "newer" setup than the 3.0v. Never mind, I am a big boy now, I'll figure it out ;D 8) ;D

I was just about to edit the key.cfg file but then I found a file next to it called key.old. Maybe I just need to rename it?

Title: Re: UQM v0.3 has arrived.. What do you think about
Post by: Deep-Jiffa on September 22, 2003, 03:23:47 am
The "old" one looks exactly like the "new" one.  :-/ Since I didn't install anything new beside windows xp( and the OS probably doesn't matter) I think the problem is in the code(no offense), or in the OS(not likely due).

just my 500$.

Actually the new vs. old CVS build's keys.cfg is only slightly different, if only because there's a couple of extra lines in the commented section. Just grab everything below the comments in your keys.old and paste them into the new keys.cfg. Problem solved.

Besides, the keyboard event handling code hasn't changed since 0.24, if not earlier - the only additions were to the configuration file parsing.

I just noticed 0.3 was out
finally playable
beat it in < 2 days :)
been a year since I've done that (last year, installed dos on an old box and beat it in 3 days)
The ilack of intro and ending is something i m sure you're all well aware of.
um, I was wondering if the dialog has changed in a few places from the pc version.  Maybe I just missed a few things.

All around, amazing

the old mod music is awsome, has it been updated?
