Title: v 3 not working.... Post by: Stealth Donut on September 11, 2003, 02:54:50 am I just downloaded the newest version of UQM v 3, and and after installing I click the shortcut. The program looks like it's beginning to work (screen goes black, the little mini-window comes up), and then 2 seconds later I'm back to desktop without anything running at all. I uninstalled v 2 before installing v3, as per the install instructions. So please, if anyone has any idea why it's doing this let me know so I can make it happen. :)
If it helps.... I'm running an AMD Athlon 1.7 Ghz processor, NVIDIA GEForce 2, 512 M RAM, on Win XP. Version 2 worked great and never gave me any problems, save that for some reason none of the command line options seemed to work, which I was kinda hoping would work with this version for me. Again, any help is appreciated :) Title: Re: v 3 not working.... Post by: Parker on September 11, 2003, 03:06:08 am You can give yourself a better idea of the problem by running the game in a command window. Type "cmd" without the quotes in the Start Menu -> Run box. Then type cd\Program Files\The Ur-Quan Masters (assuming you installed it there) and then type uqm. Any error messages will stay on the screen that way.

- Did you uninstall .2 before installing .3? - Check the UQM/content/packages folder. -- Is there a uqm-0.3-content.zip file? -- Is it 12,261 KB big? - Delete keys.cfg (and keys.old if its there) at: C:\Documents and Settings\(Your login name)\Application Data\uqm\ (The application data folder is hidden by default). Title: Re: v 3 not working.... Post by: Defender on September 11, 2003, 11:58:08 am same problem i was having. heres what i did:
first off put everthing .03 off to side some where like your desk top. data zip, voice zip, music zip. ok next: erase everthing in your "the ur-quan masters" file. c:\program files\the ur-quan masters\ now run the installer but only select executable only option. send it to: c:\program files\the ur-quan masters\ you with me so far... now open up C:\Program Files\The Ur-Quan Masters\content\packages carefully place thoes zip data, voice, music files here. now exit everthing, go to you shortcut, or whatever you use to run the game and ... so did that do it? dont be hesitent to ask questions. ill be around and so will others that are far more gifted than i. ~DEFIANT Title: Re: v 3 not working.... Post by: Charles Pirnat on September 12, 2003, 04:19:06 am That didn't work for me I'm also encountering the same problem. Does Urquan-Masters have a registry key that it does not remove from .02 when you unistall in xp. That may be the problem.
Title: Re: v 3 not working....nm I'm a retard Post by: Charles Pirnat on September 12, 2003, 05:26:41 am NM I did what the post said and it worked. What I found was that the unistaller does not remove the content directory for some reason. I deleted the content directory manually and just did an "exe only" install and copied my content zips back to the content directory and it worked.
Just wish i could get my gravis gamepad to work with urquan masters. TY for all the help guys. Title: Re: v 3 not working.... Post by: Michael Martin on September 12, 2003, 06:05:31 am Is your gamepad plugged in and registered with Windows? I'm pretty sure SDL forwards to DirectInput calls, so once you can make XP detect the joystick at all, setting up the new keys.cfg to work with the gamepad should be pretty straightforward. (I use a Playstation 1 Dual Shock hooked up to a USB port, and it works great.)
Title: Re: v 3 not working.... Post by: bigfoot256 on September 13, 2003, 06:11:47 am Is there any way to uninstall without losing voices, etc.? I don't know which folders to back up, and my little 56k took about a day to download all the voices... :(
Title: Re: v 3 not working.... Post by: Michael Martin on September 13, 2003, 11:00:29 am Back up "content" and all subdirectories thereof.
Title: Re: v 3 not working.... Post by: bigfoot256 on September 13, 2003, 02:47:53 pm Though I'm not doubting your word, it appears my content dir is only about 20MB. Yet, I recall the voices file was very large, 100+ MB. I'm not sure, the files may have been deleted at some point though.
Ah, and if it is of any importance, the size of my "The Ur-Quan Masters" directory is 158 MB, 350 MB on disk. Or so says Windows XP... Title: Re: v 3 not working.... Ah, and if it is of any importance, the size of my "The Ur-Quan Masters" directory is 158 MB, 350 MB on disk. Or so says Windows XP... This could be part of the problem, if the content packs are misplaced. It sounds like only the base content is there, though. Find your "uqm-0.3-*.zip" files and make sure all of them are in content/packages. A full install will have three such files; content, 3domusic, and voice. Check your recycle bin, too, in case you deleted them by accident. Title: Re: v 3 not working.... Post by: bigfoot256 on September 14, 2003, 03:02:41 am They don't appear to be there.
Aaaugh! Was I supposed to uninstall V 0.2 first? Why is it every time you don't read the install instructions because they're all the same it backfires on you!! *bashes head into proverbial wall* Title: Re: v 3 not working.... Post by: bigfoot256 on September 19, 2003, 06:20:38 am Dreadfully sorry to bump the topic, but does this mean I'll have to re-download the voices\music?
Title: Re: v 3 not working.... Post by: Paxtez on September 19, 2003, 09:41:21 am If you have the .zip files in content/packages, just move the packages folder someplace else. Then delete everything in the content folder move the packages folder back, and run the installer again uncheck the data file downloads.
Title: Re: v 3 not working.... Post by: bigfoot256 on September 21, 2003, 05:44:03 am I think I see what I did wrong. When I first got the files, it seems I unzipped them, rather than putting the zips in the correct folder. It seemed to work for 0.2, but it doesn't work anymore. I uninstalled, deleted all remaining files, and it worked! Of course, it didn't have the voices. So, I put the old files in, from the recycle bin. Now it didn't even specify an error message. But, I deleted starcon.key, and now it works, with sound and everything! But, it seems it doesn't want to use the new menu graphic, it is still using the old one. I moved all the files I added back, to a new folder. Perhaps someone could give me a list of the contents of the voice and music files (along with titles of both) so I can only move back the things I need.
EDIT: All right, unless I'm mistaken, "comm" and all of its subdirectories contain the voice files, as I zipped it, gave it the right name, and put it in the right place, and now the voices work. I would still aprreciate knowing which files the 3domusic zip is to contain. Title: Re: v 3 not working.... Post by: Michael Martin on September 21, 2003, 06:25:41 am The following files go in the 3domusic pack.
