Title: In your opinion, what's the ultimate battle squad?
Post by: The_Cranky_Hermit on September 20, 2003, 06:23:57 am
Don't worry about the flagship. Just assemble your personal ultimate battle squadron of 12 ships. And they have to be ships that can be acquired in the game, you can't have 6 Ur-Quan and 6 Kohr-Ar unless there's some way to acquire those ships and that many that I haven't heard of.

*blows whistle*
That's 17 ships. The limit's 12, unless there's a way to increase your fleet size. If there is a way, please tell me.

I agree. yehat/utwig makes more sense to me (both have shields and good range).

My favorite squadron is 2 spathi, 2 arilou, 2 pkunk, 2 utwig, 2 orz, 2 chmmr.

I wouldn't mind having syreens in my squad, but normally by the time I get them allied, I'm about ready to beat the game, and my syreen vs. quan skills need improvement, so I don't go for them.

Supermelee or in-game?

In-game, I go for 4 spathi (for the 'quan, both flavors, also the VUX), 3 cruisers (for the Druuge and Thraddash), 2 Orz (for the Ilwrath). 1 Pkunk for the Sa-Matra, 1 Chmmr for finishing off the fireballs.

I usually take out the Mycon with the tug, but if the tug isn't battleworthy, I will use Arilou.

Supermelee:

2 Kohr-Ah, 1 Chmmr, 2 Supox, 2 Spathi, 3 Androsynth, 1 Orz, 1 Chenjesu. Is that full? I forget.

In-game. Supermelee has a limit of 14, and you can acquire Ur-Quan and Kohr-Ah.

for the uqm, we shoudl make it so that u can have one of each ship in super melee. that makes things a lot betta.

That would more than double the fleet size...

u could choose not to use all the spaces. its just for when u wnat a longer melee.

Well, of course. But where do you put the portraits? It seems like we'd have to radically alter the fleet display.

yaa. u could make the pics of the ships smaller, so can fit twice as many in.

Well, as the person who made the patch that changed it from 12 to 14, I can say that adding in enough slots so you could have one of each ship would be possible. Obviously it would take some modifications that that part of the code and the content, but it's doable. I think, though, that this would be considered as one of those "post-1.0, non-official branch changes." It's just not something worth coding right now, especially considering the changes to the resource system that will be made somewhere between now and 0.4.

Full Game:
2 Eluders
2 Crusiers
1 Skiff
2 Penetrators
3 Terminators
2 Torches

I like using the little guys. Alternate is to swap the Torches for Blades, and the Skiff for my glorious Bom-er-Scout.  ;D

Melee (assuming 14 ships, 1 of each one listed):
Dreadnought
Blade
Jugger
Eluder
Podship
Intruder
Guardian
Torch
Marauder
Mauler
Stinger
Trader
Transformer
Avatar

Hmm...I feel inspired to write up another ship tac list. Dunno for what one though.

In the original it was:

1 Cruiser
2 Torches
2-3 Juggers
2-3 Blades
2 Nemesis
1 Eluder
(by that time i was a bad one with the Fury, and i couldn't by it, therfor never tried it. The Avatar is not listed, because i only used it against the Sa-Matra, for nothing else)
By the time i had my fleet (actually i never got it this complete, modules were of higher importance to me), i fought all my battles with the Vindicator.

By now my favourite fleet would be:

Fwiffo (!, although i never use him)
1 Cruiser
2 Nemesis
2 Torches
1 Jugger
2 Blades
1 Skiff
2 Fury

but still i'm fighting primarily with the one and only undestroyable ship, my beloved Flagship of Unzervalt, the Vindicator.

I dunno how undestroyable it is... the amplified utwig bomb seemed to do a pretty thorough job... ;)

Yeah it did. But that was a self-destruction.... ;)

But granted, against the Ur-Quan designed defensive weapons of the Sa-Matra it stands no chance... :( Mostly because the ATS brings my shots on the wrong road. :(

And i do not wish to know, how my service vehicle would fare if the Sa-Matra was turned on full power.

Good guess Novus! 10 points to your house!

And with 11 points you'd won a free inflatable beachball. Bad luck... ;)

Uupsie, sorry Necro-99!

Really my fault!

I reward you with 22 points then...

Can be expended in Aachen or in Lenningen (Germany).

Greetings,
Martin

The Sa-matra wasn't on full power?
Are you totally sure about it? (can I see a quote, I once checked and found no proof of that).

Anyway, my squadron will be:

2 Pkunk
2 Orz
2 Thraddash
2 Chmmr
2 Spathi
2 Yehat

Or I can get TWO beachballs! Wow, what a treat!

Aachen or Lenningen? Damn, I already took my class trip to Germany earlier this spring. Oh well, another reason to go again!

Say...what wonderful things can I spend Krulle Points on? I need a list or something.

What you were fighting wasn't the Sa-matra itself, but the defenses attached to the outside of the asteroid shell.
Consider: after you have destroyed the shields, the weapons stop regenerating. But you have not yet hit the Sa-Matra itself.

With evidence like that, I don't care about quotes...

Also, if the Sa-Matra were to attack a fleet of Broodhomes with those fireballs, it wouldn't work very well - the fireballs would take a long time to get to the ships in question, and they could then dispell them with a cloud of crystal shards. At close range, it could be a different story due to the rapid replenishment of the fireballs.

Hey -- is it possible to hack a save file to give the player arbitrary ships, such as Broodhomes, X-forms, etc?

I am curious as to how certain ships would fare against the Sa-Matra. For instance:
Ilwrath (close range which is bad, but invisibility might make the defenses unable to latch on, and it does a lot of damage)
Kohr-Ah (FRIED can clear away the defenses, and you're always in range -- no need to get close)
Chenjesu (Similarly long-ranged. Probably don't regenerate quickly enough to neutralize the fireballs AND do damage)
Mmrnmhrm (fast, perhaps enough to avoid the fireballs... could drift by at high speed with the laser, perhaps?)
Androsynth (Probably ineffective, but it depends on the HP of the fireballs -- after all, the acid clouds have a lot of blocking power in them, cumulatively. Also, you might - MIGHT - be able to dodge effectively with the blazer)

I'm not at all curious as to how the Mycon or VUX would do... it would be a complete wash... Same with the Kzer-Za, since the fighters wouldn't lock on properly.

Hmm...
-Would DOGIs prevent the Sa-Matra's shields from launching more fireballs/bouncers?
-Would the Kzer-Za fighters attack the shields?
-Would the Vux limpets make the Sa-Matra slower?  ::)

You might be able to change what *gift* ships you get at the end (assuming that you solved the civil war).  I haven't even looked at the code for this, so don't take my word for it.

Similarly, you could save the game just before the final battle, then edit the entries for the ships in the save file (via a hex editor), and potentially take in whatever ships the game allows in.
