Title: OT: DOSBox
Post by: Captain Smith on October 16, 2003, 03:39:19 am
For those who are interested, I still run the original SC2 under Windows ME and sometimes Windows XP.  How?  I use this program, and it works well for SC2...it will also work for a lot of your other old DOS games...feel free to dust them off, take them out, go to dosbox.sourceforge.net and have fun....

and for those of you who know this program....0.60 is out, and has DPMI support now.  W00t!  ;D

Yep, Dosbox version 0.55 worked quite well for SC2 on linux too.  Before UQM (and after eschewing M$), that was the way I played SC2. :)

We've been using DOSBox for most of our "compatibility checks" against the PC version; however, sometimes the behavior is still slightly different.  This wasn't my department, really, but I saw some of the end results of those discussions...

It is indeed a nice piece of work.

Just let me know when they get Tyrian working on it :)

Ah, Tyrian.  It's too bad the GBA version seems to be on indefinite hold.

I know Raptor got an SDL port at some point, though I can't seem to find the demo for this anywhere...

UPDATE:  While poking around looking for other Tyrian updates, I found that the complete soundtrack from the Jukebox got a MIDI conversion (http://members.iinet.net.au/~vannevar/tyrian/music.html) last May (borgmidi.zip).  This is good news.  *rocks out to CAMANIS*

Ahh, I remember Tyrian. Now I've got to fire up my old P2 sometime and play it again...

The music just doesnt sound right if its not on a SB16 FM Emulation.

Tyrian works on Win2k and XP, but alas not on modern sound cards :/

Yeah, and the music was the best part, too...  :(

Definately agreed there.

I actually found a winamp2 plugin that can play LDS file format, the original file format of Tyrian.

It crashes every time for me though :/

Maybe someone skilled can have a hax0r at the source ?
That DOS player is ok, but unfortunately since windows munts up the PIT it cant keep proper sound timing.

AdPlug's LDS loader seems to be somewhat broken; I guess that's why it's marked preliminary. The stuff it's trying to load looks roughly like the Tyrian LDS files, but there seems to be some problems with sizes and positions of values in the file. Looks like someone tried to convert someone else's loader but didn't get it to work.

As this is off topic, I'll refrain from discussing this subject further here; I suggest you use private messages if you want to continue discussing this.

Run the DOS player in dosbox.  It seems to work pretty well (though it assumes you have a Yamaha, it seems, not a SoundBlaster...)

Hmmm, dosbox still doesn't play Archon Ultra. *sigh* I guess I'll just have to wait some more.

(Mentioned here since StarControl was meant to be StarArchon, as any PR3 fan should know.)

Actually I read that Star Control was a distortion of Archon (note the emphasis).

DUDE! I never got that! I mean, it's right there staring me in the face and I never got it! I'm so stoopid.

And whoever figured that out is pretty clever.
