Title: Lessen the damage to your ship
Post by: Dan on December 28, 2003, 11:47:37 pm
Do certain parts of your ship recieve less damage than others when taking hits?

I am fairly sure that you cannot reduce damage to your ship by getting hit in different places. As far as I know (and I've played a lot of UQM) damage is dealt on an all or nothing basis.

The only exemptions I can think of are
1. Damage to your landers (while on planets) when they get hit by fire, lightning, animals or earthquakes.

2. When a ship runs into a planet, it loses crew. I forget exactly how many, but I think it's about 1/4th of the current crew. So a ship with four crew, running into a planet, loses one crew member. A ship with fourty crew, would lose ten (or there about).

Enemy fire, though, seems to be always all or nothing.

Ready, aim, fire!

You are right it is 1/4 from the total crew but with one minor change, the max is 10. And there was a programmer here who created a "mod" to uqm and planned creating what you asked but he left and his work is incomplete.

what i thought would be awsome is if different sections of your ship had their own seperate hitpoints, and one section would have crew. if u damaged a weapon section it wouldnt work as well and so on.

Too complex for uqm engine.

Says who? There was a guy here(can you hear me..... *wind*) who actually did in with UQM ENGINE. But ofcourse no one has the ability or the motivation (or both) to do it. I don't have the ability. Too bad :(

Story line wise, that would work. The Spathi has always had "decoy" pods, but anywhere you get hit takes crew.

However, I prefer not doing that. First off, we want a FAITHFUL reproduction of the original game.

Second, if we start questioning gameplay issues like this, we're on a slippery slope my friend. Why does every hit kill your crew? Isn't there some "hull" here to consider? What's with this "maximum speed"? Space has no maximum speed. etc. Trust me, questions like this can (and probably will) go on and on.

In short, it's a game and certian simplifications had to be made for that reason.

heh,
"max of ten"?
"1/4 of total crew"?
in the os X version of the game i have lost 40 crew from hitting a planet (just a few minutes ago in fact) should i bug it? :P
just kidding...it did take me 3 tries to win that battle as the planet was mysteriously in the way everytime the next ur-quan cruiser loaded *shrug* 3 tries but i won eventually  ;D

I'm still here.

I've just been REALLY busy with work.

I'm going to pick my mod back up after 1.0, most likely.
