Title: What do we like to do in our café?
Post by: Lukipela on December 31, 2003, 01:49:09 am
As this is a cafè, I hereby open a beverage thread. Favourite drinl? Alcholoic or non-alcoholic.

I'd  for a goop pint of Guiness, or a Irish cider such as Bulmers. What does the rest of the crew partake in?

Since I am too young to buy alchohol (without hiding it at least :P ) I will go for hot-coco with Tim-Tam.

I'm plenty old enough to drink, but I don't. Ever. Soda water with a few slices orange if I'm at a bar. If I'm at a starbucks, steamed milk with caramel syrup is my choice.

during my late teens, early 20s, i was a partyholic.
malt liqour: mickeys

beer: coors lite, or hefenweizen (sp)... gotta love that wheat beer!

hard liqour: yukon jack, southern comfort, or just about any rum with bacardi 151 being at the top of the list. mixed with coke of course.

now a days, i seldom touch any alcohol. only on special occasions and even then i rarley get drunk. its just no fun anymore. i guess i was just a thrill drinker.

but since im here, ill order up some hot apple cider, with a cinnimon stick for a straw. i sure do love the holidays! cheers!!

Water... Fresh from the tap.  ;)

I tend to prefer coke (the cola, not the controled substance :P) over most drinks.

Hmm, lessee ...

"SPATHI STEW WITH SOME FRESH SUPOX SALAD!"

Not.

Ice-cold Pepsi Twist is neat. Preferably Vanilla Coca-cola. Just something that has sugar and destroys your teeth.

"...could I still get some Supox with broccoli?..."

Hook me up with the lemonade... Old enough to drink, don't care to.

Well, on the soft drink side, I'd definetly go with a good old cuppa tea. You know, made the proper irish/british way with plenty of sugar and milk, without any fancy tastes...

Speaking cold soft drinks, I don't really have a favourite, it varies. And most of the brands I drink wouldn't be recognized outside of scandinavia anyways...

Except for milk. Never underestimate a cold glass of milk. Goes great with most things.

Vodka...preferably mixed with some orange juice.

A screwdriver man eh? I've always wondered about that, after a few, doesn't the orange juice leave a sour taste in your mouth? Or do you just have a few? I drink vodka from time to time, but screwdriver has just neevr been my thing I suppose.

Drinking vodka is like drinking from a ZFP plasma-injection tongue attack.

That wasn't scary enough; let me try again.

Drinking Vodka is like swallowing a fleet of miniaturized Kohr-Ah/Shofixti hybrids who all set off their special weapon at once.

Not really... it stings a bit, but not that much... I drank it only once in my life and it isn't so bad... it had like 36% alchohol.

Title: Re: What do we like to do in our café?

Mine was handed to me by a pack of new-years-celebrating Russians. This was no 36%.

Title: Re: What do we like to do in our café?

That's not proper Vodka anymore, real vodka is around 40%. That's homemade booze, which is typically around 80%, and not healthy to drink. And it does feel like someone fired a Ilwrath Avenger weapon down your throat.

It's actually a question of self.preservance, and one you might do well to heed young one. Of course, all alcohol is unhealthy, but when you get to the stuff over 70%, it can actually damage tissue in both your stomach and your throat if you drink it raw. Why do you think it burns? It's your body hurting...

This kind of alcohol isn't necessarily vodka though, it can have any base. Back when I lived in Ireland, they had this thing called... shine I think, which was basically homemade whiskey. Smeleld like whiskey, but was clear and around 85% That stuff was decidedly unhealthy.

if you really want to punish yourself, and i really DO NOT RECOMMEND THISis  to find some "everclear" 190 proof grain alcohol. this stuff will take the paint off most houses, no questions asked. its usually mixed into a blend of other alcohols, something to the effect of "pirates punch", or mixed with kool aid, frozen in ice tray, then eatin whole. but thats where the complications of alcohol poisoning stem from. too many kids haved gotten sick and/or died because of "everclear". so here in the good old usa, its been removed from sight. you have to ask for it by name. and of course show legal proof of age ;)

agian... I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS. but since we were talking about  the strong stuff, i thought id throw that in there.

My sis got a hold of some everclear once. Now, as stated before I don't drink, and neither does she. She needed it do distil the esence from herbs and evidently pure alchol is the way to go for that.

Other than practical value I don't think there's a use for everclear if all you're going to do is drink it.

*steps out of his cloning cylinder, a few thousand clones following him*
Hi guys. Been awhile.
On the contrary, Everclear can do a few useful things.
1. Everclear can strip paint from most anything.
2. Everclear can melt low-grade plastic.
3. Everclear can strip grease off of any surface, provided it does not simply melt through the surface itself.
4. Everclear can kill brain cells at an alarming rate.

As for hair and pints, I've got enough/had enough for awhile. Break was enjoyable, but the loss of a step-grandfather made it a little more bitter than I would've liked.

Habaneros? Did I hear someone mention habaneros? Great stuff I say.

My friend regurarly brings habanero powder to school and we put some (a little amount) to the food, stir and then eat and drink a load of milk.

And what comes to alcohol drinks, I loath them. I see too many people drinking it and hear too many stupid events where alcohol is guilty.

And the whole stuff tastes bad!

Depends on the type of alcohol you drink. Some is yucky, some isn't. all down to personal reference. And as for what happens when under the influence... Well, some people can drink sensibly, some can't. just like soem people should never be allowed behind the wheel of a car, some should never be allowed close to a bottle.

This thread reminds me of a comical story that my high school chemistry teacher told our class about Everclear.

She said that she new a man that she went to collage with who took a research job with the military in Alaska. Every morning the men would have to thaw their water, and this was getting really old so he decided to fill his canteen with everclear knowing that it would not freeze. So the next day while every one was thawing their water he pulled out his Everclear and took a drink. Needless to say the everclear was still below -40F and froze a good part of his innards.  Don’t worry after a trip a hospital and some surgery he was fine.

Personally, I think alcohol is a poison.  It just takes more alcohol than cyanide to kill you.

That being said, I'm a big fan of mildly carbonated drinks, like Mexican sodas.  Nothin' like chillin' on a hot day with a bottle of tamarind-flavored Jarritos to cool ya down.  Not that everybody likes it, but that there's nothing like it.

Practically any compound can be harmful in too large doses; ask any diver what happens if you get too much oxygen in your air supply.

That said, ethanol, in suitable doses, produces effects that some people find desirable. Other people may find these effects (in themselves or in others) undesirable. Below the toxicity limit, the whole thing is pretty much a matter of taste.

well, i rarely drink alcohol for fun except those times when i WANT those desired side effects (at which i consume just about everyhting i can lay hands on - from beer to a self manufactured killer coctail straight to Absinthe 70%... man does that stuff burn!). barring that, usually a smirnoff ice - it's got a nice taste to it, you don't feel the alcohol and it gives a mild wooziness...

Title: Re: What do we like to do in our café?

I drink alcohol on an annual basis: one glass of champagne (if I bother to down the whole glass at all) on New Year's. Other than that, can't stand the stuff.

I also swore off soda (except every so often, when I'm out to lunch or something) a couple of years back, since I was starting to develop a bit more of a paunch than I would like. All that sugar can really increase the size of your gut if you're not careful, which makes it sort of like beer without the vile taste, awful stench, idiotic behavior, and brain-crushing hangover if you overindulge.

I guess that makes my beverage of choice seltzer. With a bit of lime for flavor, when possible. Otherwise, I usually drink water, or on rare occasions, tea. That would be tea straight, no milk, no sugar, no nothing added.

You know, a few years back, I'd have rambled on about beer and drinks of all sorts... Nowadays, I'd just say wine. I rarely drink anymore, mostly just wine with dinner if we've cooked something really nice during the weekend with my girlfriend. I suddenly feel very old.

EDIT: And looking through the thread, I notice I apparently made it. That's a blast from the past alright. this is from right aroudn the time the Cafe came into existence. Hello old me.

You should all drink more, 'cause if you give up on alcohol, you give up on sanity. Look at the muslim world, explosions and jihadis. Look at china, cultural revolution and commies. Look at america (we drink do we? ever tasted our beer? I rest my case) mcdonald's and the pavement parting as ones mass is distributed into it, during our signature lumbering waddle. We can now see the unnatural balance that soberness has created in our global society.

Do to my self hatred, I don't really drink. But there is still time for the rest of you. Anyhow, the best drinks are those that don't taste much different when they don't have any happy juice in 'em. Like virgin marries, with lots of spice, or various sweet icy things.

Vodka, whiskey, the stuff you put in your car, those are all for those who can't taste anything anyway, because they're too drunk.

Uugh! i can't stand whiskey! anything is better than that! i'd rather drink absinthe (the 90% one!) and i can taste vodka when i'm drunk! (so seldom this days... :-[) it's just that it still tastes awful!  ;)

Well not everything in life tastes good, but that doesn't mean you quit. I don't care what kind of athlete you are, because it doesn't matter what the sport is, what really makes a difference is heart. You don't think a sour pickle would stop a competitive eater, do you? They too know what it means to stare queasiness in the face and say "You will not take me down, I am stronger than vomit!"

That's the kind of attitude you need as a drinker, be it for competition or otherwise.

in a an eyeball glass (high glass) fill it to the brim with a 1/3 Absolute Vodka, a 1/3 Jeggermeister and a 1/3 Taquila (the brand doesn't really matter) you pour the glass into something a bit bigger and add a can of redbull to the mix. and that's that. however if you are the kind that hates the taste of alcohol but wants to drink a lot (like me) you'll pour the whole thing into a 1 1/2 liter bottle and add grape syrup and water and then you get the kick plus averting (as much as possible) the hangover effects. you can later sustain the kick throughout the evening with a beer every now and then. so, what do you think?

If I recall correctly, he was swearing and fuming about some jewish conspiracy or otehr all the way to the lockup. Add lome lewd conduct towards female officers (callign them sugartits and suchlike) and presto, you have a very embarassed Mr. gibson. I long for the good old Mad Max days, before he went all mental.

And as for Mel... Well, let's just say I didn't buy it when he gave that "I'm not anti-semitic!" crap after he released Passion of the Christ. This is just more proof than we all ever needed. Also, "slowly" going mental? He's been mental right from the start, even before Mad Max, he just hides it well! Did you even notice that in every one of his movies, either he or someone else is brutally tortured, often at length? Yeah, he's a masochist all right. On workdays, I usually just fix myself a poorman's mocha:  A packet (or on an extravigant day, two packets) of rich chocolate mix in a cup of coffee from my automatic coffee maker, then iced.

When I go out for coffee, I get an iced mocha with whipped cream.

If I'm at a restaurant that only serves Coke stuff, I'll get diet Coke, since I honestly do like the taste better, and there's something in regular Coke that makes my teeth feel rubbery.

But for soft drinks, unless there's some weird exotic imported thing around, I prefer good old Mountain Dew. (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a324/cyberpumpkin/cpicodew.gif)

I'd like to see you work as an actor for a while and not have soem strong opinions about the Jews.  ;D

The 'rubbery' feeling on your teeth is actually the acid in Coke eating away at the coating that your teeth usually have (and a little bit at the teeth themselves).  Coke is pretty strong stuff, as any good high school Chemistry teacher will tell you.

And coffee is disgusting. Usually Milkshake or Chocolate milk for me.

I like tropical Alcoholic beverages, can't stand vodka, whiskey, or rum straight. I prefer mixed drinks you could say. Favorite beer is Miller Genuine Draft for its crispness. I like coffee a lot and I will drink it when I can get it but I never drink more than 3 a day if I can help it. Lance, 8 cups are WAY too much, how do you sleep? My favorite cola is Diet Coke and my favorite Citrus soda is &up because the sweetness and crispness is balanced unlike sprite (too sweet) and sierra mist (too crisp). But mostly, all I drink is a glass of purified tap water and a twist of lemon.

As for Mel being a maschist, south park took this way out of proportion in their episode "The passion of the Jew" by making Mel Gibson look like a deranged pervert who likes torture. This was one of the only time I thought South Park tryed getting their point out a little too strongly  :P

FYI, you leave a chicken bone in a cup full of stomach acid and it'll be worse :)

Indeed. If you want to compare the acidity of different thigns you drink, this (http://www.21stcenturydental.com/smith/pH_drinks.htm) might be a good start. As you can see, coke isn't the only thing that can dissolöve teeth. Most of the stuff yuo drink can.

If I want alcohol (usually don't) then those drink that you don't feel the alcohol in them.

This is an interesting difference between alcohol. I enjoy the taste of alcoholic drinks, but I dislike most of those that hide the alcohol taste completely. Would you say that you drink alcohol only for the effect that it has on you then?

like tropical Alcoholic beverages, can't stand vodka, whiskey, or rum straight. I prefer mixed drinks you could say. Favorite beer is Miller Genuine Draft for its crispness. I like coffee a lot and I will drink it when I can get it but I never drink more than 3 a day if I can help it. Lance, 8 cups are WAY too much, how do you sleep? My favorite cola is Diet Coke and my favorite Citrus soda is &up because the sweetness and crispness is balanced unlike sprite (too sweet) and sierra mist (too crisp). about the 8 cups of coffee - that's on days that i can't afford to sleep...
however coffe doesn't really have that much effect on me anymore so it's understandable. there's a joke that's told by the senior years that is very appropriate to me - "by your last year you will have some blood in your caffine..."

and you don't drink it for it's effect at all? me, besides smirnoff ice the only reason i drink alcohol is for the effect.

Nowadays I drink very little. I'll have a glass of wine with dinner, or a whiskey in the evening with some chocolate and some good book. I might have a nice cool beer during a hot day. But I rarely drink more than one beer, one whiskey, or one to two glasses of wine. So I really don't get much of an effect from it, it's mostly because I enjoy the taste.

If i go out with friends, or attend a party of some sort, I'll have a few beers and feel a slight buzz. But I never drink  in order to become drunk anymore, and on the few occasions that I do become drunk I mostly regret it the next morning.

So in short, no. I drink it for the taste. This is why I don't really like Smirnoff Ice/Bacardi Breezer/whatnot. For that taste, I might equally well just be consuming some soft drink. In which case I'll have a soft drink, and not have to worry about not being able to drive after a few glasses.

As the name suggests, I normally pint on coffee - type irrelevant (within reason).

When under stress or dealing with deadlines, I go for 24-Nuclear or quintuple espresso (if available).

On the occasion I drink something else, I go for a dry white wine or a dark beer.

On the rare occasion I want to obliviate myself, I hit the tequila or the absinthe (which is illegal down here).

Or both, if it's been a bad year.

Putting a glass of vodka in front of me usually solicits an abrupt reponse.

When I got out with friends and I need to drive I don't drink alcohol at all.
I drive around 90% of the time (they don't have license, I live in another town).

When I don't drive I sometimes want to experiment with said effects. Though I never got really drunk since I'm not interested in making a fool of myself and getting a hangover.
Not to mention that I suspect that I'm the sleepy kind of drunk. So drinking just so I'll fall asleep there is silly.

About acids - thanks Lukipela, this illustrate the point quite well - Drinking coke is not much worse then other things. And your stomech is designed to deal with worse.

Distant watcher that is rather unhealthy, but yes i drink coffee for the taste and the buzz I get off it. Distant, you seem to have developed a tolerance to caffine. I also drink alcohol for the taste and the buzz. I seldomly drink cheap alcohol because it tastes offensivly terrible most of the time.

yep, its DEFINATELY unhealthy...
as for tolerance, it reached a stage where i had to stay awake during night shifts ( iused to work as a security guard during my degree) and in order to stay awake i whipped up some kind of homemade filter for coffee which filtered hot water through a spoon (yep a spoon) and a half of coffee into half a cup. i drank that and was pretty jumpy for an hour or so but i managed to stay awake. anyway, those days are over now, thankfully.

(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a324/cyberpumpkin/cpicowhoa.gif) I've developed a tolerance to caffeine myself, mostly because I drink it before work.  For years, I used to work temp jobs, so every 6 months to a year, I'd take a week or two off and detox from it so I could make use of its effects once I started a new gig.

I've been at the same job for 2.5 years now, and I have to make sure to remember to have some coffee when I get up on the weekends, or I end up all sluggish and with headaches and such.

The sucky part is that if I have a weakened Mt. Dew (at a restaurant, usually), I'll actually get sleepier than if I hadn't had anything.  I used to scoff at people who had that reverse effect from caffeine.  Now I know better.

Indeed. There are plenty of good reasons to not drink most sodas, or at least to not drink excessive amounts of them. There is little point in fabricating extra reasons, especially ones that are so obviously faulty

does anybody have a favourite homemade mixture?
the kind of one that really knocks you off your feet?
failing that, just something with a mild buzz and a nice taste to it?

EDIT: noone??

Err.. define homemade. That you've distilled the alcohol yourself? That you've mixed an alcohol and other liquids yourself?

In the former case, it's illegal in my country. But rumour has it that my grandfather used to make something not quite unlike that, which I may or may not have had the questionable privilege of tasting.

As for mixing things, I'll assume you just mean drinks of different sorts then? There are plenty of those to go around, the internet is full of recipes. And anything I recommend might be hard to reproduce, seeign as not all liquers and alcohols exists in all parts of the world.

heh, do you mean "the drink that has mostly apples in it"? the one that can corrode metal? ;)

bu seriously, i just meant mixing the alcohol, and although there are numerous recipies on the internet many of them aren't very strong so before i go out and buy the ingredients i like to get personal opinions. And although drinks do vary from place to place what usually varies is the quality - vodka, tequila or gin will usually be the same, no?

Unless you try to buy cider in Finland, thta is generally true, yes.

Alright, a quick one which is both fresh and tasty. It is normal strength, but has a nice taste.

Nalle Åkerlund

2 cl Sour Apple liquer (or equailent)
2 cl Vodka

Crush half a lime in a high glass. Put ice in glass. Pour alcohol in. Half fill with apple juice. Top up with Sprite. Alternatively, use only sprite.
