Title: XArchon
Post by: meep-eep on February 17, 2004, 06:02:44 pm
I recently discovered XArchon, a remake of the original archon (by Paul Reiche III a.o.) for the Linux, BSD and Solaris.
I haven't played the original myself, but I figured there might be some people here who would be interested in knowing that this game exists.
XArchon supports network play.
It can be found here (http://xarchon.seul.org/).

Thanks, i am interested.
I haven't played the original neither, but seeing that even more of their games remaked, i wonder wich game will be next?

Enjoy!

edit I should have taken a look first. Alas i do not run on Linux yet. But i'll make sure to remember this site!

Woohoo!  I tried playing my old copy of archon after I copied my 5 1/4 disks, but even moslo couldn't slow the computer down enough.  Hope this works better..  Archon ultra faired better on my new system, but it just doesn't have the nostalgia factor.

There is another project called archon evolution (http://www.archonevolution.com) that is attempting to faithfully re-create the archon playing experience with new graphics on windows machines. On a big, big plus, it's nearing beta time, so if XArchon isn't an option (for us non-linux user) there'll soon be an option.

Too bad evolution will never be open-source; that will turn off a lot of the unix users (they say they have long term plans for a unix port).

I have a copy of the original, CGA, Archon that has been binary patched to run on newer computers.  It runs flawlessly on my 3Ghz P4, without having to resort to the likes of Dosbox, Bochs, etc.

PM me if you're interested in it.

You can always download a Commodore 64 simulator and run the C64 version over it.
It's free and small.
