Title: Outlook problem!
Post by: Deep-Jiffa on March 09, 2004, 05:40:48 am
Ok, I formated my computer and I got to the place that I need to install office! I took my cd(office 97) and installed it. Ops! Installed outlook express 97 accidently! That program is really annoying. So I downloaded the latest version of outlook express and it says I already have it installed! Now I am stuck with outlook 97! How can I install the new one again?

Are you sure that the version you are downloading is the lastest?

Be careful with that the latest verison (I think) Outlook XP has a tendecy to change the password for your e-mail so read it thoughly. I use Yahoo through IE and I've had no problems not bad from free software eh?

Hunt down the add/remove programs option in the control panel. Then remove anything that says Outlook or Outlook Express. Then install the newest version of Outlook.

It came with my XP so it doesn't show on the add/remove programs list. And it is the latest, I downloaded it from microsoft's site!

I suppose you could delete everythign again and reinstall windows. Than when it asks you what you want ot install, unclick Outlook. That  should work.

Well you are the one who said it was good for your CPU.

You could, of course, manully un-install Outlook. Just hunt around for it under the Program Files. Of course, Windows might refuse to believe it's really gone. However, in that case, formatting is probably the easiest way. While your at it, you might want to consider switching OSs.

Linux isn't free from package management screwups either (unless you compile everything yourself).  For example: RedHat 9's up2date program routinely thrashes the rpm database.

For DJ's problem:  The programs that came with Windows XP are under add/remove programs, but they're under the "add/remove windows components" section.  If you can't uninstall it, try looking up online for the registry settings that outlook 97 uses, and remove them (if you just formatted, screwing up the registry isn't a big deal cause you can just reinstall the OS).   Then, try installing the new version of outlook express.  Question though:  if you've got Office 97, why are you using outlook express, and not the full version of Outlook?  Or for that matter, why not use Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/)?

Granted, RPM is a flaky system. Especially for dependancies. However, I've never seen a problem with RedHat's up2date.
Though, I don't recall suggesting any particular alternitive to WinXP. Heck
just a different version of Windows might be better (and faster). I hear
that MS is extending Win98's life.
Though I'm a big Linux fan, I do acknowledge that it has numerous problems of its own.

BSD is also a stable sort of system. For those willing to tackle it.

I am not going to switch my OS!!!! I have only 9 gb on my computer, devided by 3!!! Linux operating system takes 2 gb! Right now I have got only 900 free MB, 750 of them in c:\. If it will go lower, the computer will work worse than now. Anyway, I didn't know there is a full version of outlook... and I will check about the registery things. Thanx again!

My suggueston? Buy more hard disk space - It cost so cheap nowadays. About - 30 GB for 15 bucks in my store. You probaly should also pick a 128 chip - those don't go for over 30$ either. Either way, it sounds as if your CPU is hurting.  :(

First, I need a new M board because my correct one can't hold it. That is about 800 NIS, now I need to buy a new hard disk, that is about another 120-300 NIS(depends on the size).

NIS - Transaltes into how many US dollars?

I know you're not going to change OS's but just a clarification:  linux can have an incredibily small installation size (I run a version of linux on my ipaq that only takes up about 18 MB, and that includes the extra programs I installed).  More than likely you clicked "workstation instal" on one of the more popular linux CDs and got all the software that would effectively replace 15-18 microsoft CDs.

1$ = 4.5 NIS(not really, but I didn't check it lately  ::) ) Once upon a time it was only 3 NIS, but then those damn Arabs decided to... Well you know. But anyway, it doesn't really matter how much the dollar is wroth.
