Title: "Exploring" planet surfaces, as in Noctis. Post by: Megagun on April 11, 2004, 07:42:39 pm Okay, a little idea.
Anyone knows the game Noctis (http://anywherebb.com/postline/index.php?l=5Q5ewnNgjr7i6OFdMYGhpI7iHw4&r=lYUhcug3l3hh9gr6Rtv1qlu4Dw1)? It's a space-exploring game where you explore planets by walking on them, in a 3d environment. What if this could be somehow implemented in UQM too? That you can walk on planets? Possibly with a mod, or something like that? Like with the planet surface, planet height maps should be generated the same way (something to do with x and y coordinates, in combination with a certain seed?). Ofcourse, it shouldn't be in a resolution such as 1024 x 768, 320x240 should be nice too, or 640x480 perhaps (That's what makes Noctis so nice: the small resolution gives it something extra). I really don't know if this is POSSIBLE at all, but if someone is willing to check it out... ;) edit: removed picture, didn't quite work.. What about making Sc2 a bit more "explore"-able? Such as you cand WALK on planets in a topdown 2d view, where a planet is zoomed for about 300% relative to the planet-lander screen. When you walk on the planet, you see plants, small creatures (instead of the big ones you can see when you're in the lander), rocks, etc. Which should make nice pictures, and make the game a bit more interesting (and more longliving, too!). BTW.. why don't planets in Sc2 have a day/night side? Title: Re: "Exploring" planet surfaces, as in N Post by: Valtteri on April 15, 2004, 12:05:59 pm Hmm... I don't know, but that 3D-planet thing is probably pretty difficult to make and I don't find any use for that. You could walk on the planet, but what would you do there? Lander is a powerful killing machine, quick ship on the land and you can load minerals there. It's dangerous and needless to walk on the planet when you can always use a lander. I just think that "walking on the planet"-system doesn't fit in the UQM-universe. But, I can't decide for that.
Title: Re: "Exploring" planet surfaces, as in N Post by: guesst on April 23, 2004, 07:11:57 am My question would be "Why?" What would it add to the game? I mean, sure, it'd be 'cool' but you can't just throw something in a game because it's cool. If it doesn't add to the gameplay than for get it, the game's better off without it.
