thanks BioSlayer. i came here one day, checking in on posts, when i noticed the site thats has my avatar went down. ive been using this on other sites so i thought id upgrade here as well. and yes if it wasnt for the Defiant, i think ds9 would of went south real quick. it needed that mobility that the next generation had.

t1... LUCKY! i only got dsl becuase they had a good deal where i live. that and i really begged my wife to let me get it ::). i am very happy with the results. 56k just doesnt cut when im trying to download 10mb files on up. im so stoked... ;D

~DEFIANT

ps: how fast can you download, say a 100mb file? i havent tried to yet but im itching to download something... he he :P

100mb? well the speed depends on the connection to the server but it is usaly is less then 9 minutes.
if you want to try downloading large files DL a Bittorent Client like "Azureus" and goto
http://www.animesuki.com/
download the first Episode of a anime series and watch it.
I would recomend "Naruto" or  "Soukyuu no Fafner"
oh yea you also have to DL the DivX codec and maybe the Xvid Codec.
the anime Episodes on that website are perfectly legal to download.

also to add some more info on my sudgestion about the DL of anime. they are fansubs so the original japanese audio is still there but subtitles apear on screen to tell you what they are saying. so you have to be a decently fast reader or very quick on the pause button.

with my T1 i have DL over 350 gigs of anime.
now all i need is money to buy each series that has been bought by a US company.

also
http://www.animenfo.com
is a good sight to find out what each anime is about.

If it's a connection to another participating university, I2 has connection speeds that are pretty fast.  I love DL'ing stuff from university of Minnisota's SF mirror.  My home connection is 0 bits/second.  Yeah, that's right, 0!  No one can have any higher mulitple of my home speed. :)

I just got 256k per second. Now whenever I use a dial-up, I just can't take it.

BioSlayer:
what knid of anime is this. action, adventure? i havent yet had a chance to downloaded some yet. what im really looking for though is the american version of "star blazers" or in japan 'space battleship yamoto". if you know of this, please, point me in the right direction.

figured out why i was having trouble with my connection here to UQM. it was my firewall(zone alarm). i had to uninstall and then reinstall it for a dsl connection. ooops...its all good now.
talk at you all later,

http://www.animesuki.com
It’s a website that links to ALL the fan-subs you can download.

http://www.animenfo.com
It’s a Huge database about anime. This site provides Information that even encompasses the character names and who does the voice acting.

Most of the good stuff just got licensed. Even though it’s a good thing it terms of I will be able to buy it in America, its bad in terms of you won’t legally be able to download it anymore.

A Space Epic? I wish they would make one of those, but I have yet to see something that would fit that description.  One that comes close is “Kiddy Grade” but that is licensed. One that is not licensed that you might just like is “Macross Zero,” but so far all of the episodes have take place on earth. “Planet ES” is set in space, but its lacks the conflict you desire.

Naruto is stories about ninjas who cast spells. It’s really cool.
"Soukyuu no Fafner" seems like a mix between “Neon Genesis Evangelion” and “Raxephon.” (only 2 eps so far)

But for your first DL I would recommend “Macross Zero”. Remember “Super Dimensional Fortress Macross” (Robotech) and Macross Plus? It’s about the “Unification Wars”

As for a few licensed that I think are worth buying:
“Uchuu no Stellvia” is an anime I enjoy. I know I should not enjoy this because of the sheer stupidity of the characters and the world, but I can’t stop enjoying that series each time I watch it.
“Scrapped Princess” NO WORDS can describe how much I like this series.
“Witch Hunter Robin” is a great story about a secret world of witches in the present time and the people who hunt them down.

My computer at work? Well, we're on the Internet2, so if I'm browsing off hours I basically have three or four T3 lines at my disposal. I consider it a pretty sweet setup.

At home? No computer.

D_999 - Nice setup - but does it not get to the point to where you don't notice the difference between T1 and T3 lines? (when it comes to normal surfing - NOT downloads) I mean - don't you like max out the servers and-or your computer? Either way - nice setup.....

265k during the summer when I'm at my parents, 10 Mb line where i study. Sadly, that's a shared line so speeds vary from insanely fast to very fast.

I have a wireless connection that constantly changes from 54 Mbps down to 11 Mbps (at least according to my computer's current connection stats), so I really have no idea how fast or slow I'm going in comparison to the other connection here. Bleck.

Internet2 is useful for more than just DL's.  Realtime high-res video conferencing, VPN'ed NFS mounts or Xsessions across a continent; anything high-bandwidth.  It's fun for the whole family (of geeks).  Of course, it's highspeed now because it has such a limited user base.  If it were opened up to the commercial internet, it'd slow quite a bit.

try here (http://www.dslreports.com). then click on test and tools in the left had side. next click on speed test. note you must have java installed for this to work. from here click on a server, doesntmatter wich, but i always go for the least busy. scroll to the bottom and press start. it will begin testing your speed. nothings saved on your pc by the way its all java. when the test is done you will see where you stand.

heres mine (http://www.dslreports.com/speedtests/216052;108885;51060914542a9c4099482b47185b0236;3.0;www.dslreports.com/1089949025)

My results: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtests/2626492;191846;dda9ef99d8879af787063c97c59dbbcf;2.0;pit.speakeasy.net/1090009221

Your download speed : 2626492 bps, or 2564 kbps.
A 320.6 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 191846 bps, or 187 kbps.

Hot damn! I've got a cable modem, which is about $50 a month. It beats the pants off of a lousy T1 line, for a fraction of the price!  ;D

Title: Re: What's your connection speed?
Post by: ellobo on July 21, 2004, 11:00:32 pm
That link abowe gives me the exact transfer speeds both ways. I think it's the max limit of that "tester".

My 100mbit line should boast up to 13.5 mbytes/sec. And it does it when I connect to my friends living "inside" same university network at Tampere, Finland.

To "outer world" outside our network, I'll get maximum download bandwith about >1 mbyte/sec.

So to outside our network it's about 10 mbit connection.
But inside 100 mbit, and that's what I like a much.  ;D

Well, last time that I installed java on my pc my windows crashed down and I had to reinstall it. So I will have to believe to my friends who say my internet is complete shit.  :-[

All right! Cox just upgraded their service. From 3000/384 to 4000/512 Kbits. (384/48 KiloBytes/sec to 512/64 KB) Here's my new results...
- 3566/436    (445/54 KByte)
- 3351/482    (418/60 KByte)
I live close to the Cox office, so I know I'll get really good speeds. They also offer a premium 5000/768 line.  I hope they keep increasing their speed, for free of course.  ;D

My download speed tops out at about 156kb/s.

I have exactly the same as Ellobo, though mine tends to be faster, sometimes reaching 25 Mbit/s. :P
