Title: Game Ends at 2159?
Post by: Andrew Pidcock on July 23, 2004, 10:23:07 pm
Hello all,

I've been playing/testing and re-loving Ur-Quan Masters (SC2 is still one of my favorite games of all time.

I hit a snag, and I'm not sure if it's a BUG in this version or not.  The game announces my total defeat at 2159.   I had been proceeding around at what seemed an ordinary pace.. is the game made to end at that point?

Thanks

Yes, unless you proceed to a certain point in the game in which the date is pushed back by a year.

Who announces your defeat? Have you ever encountered them before?

When you encounter an alien race, you'll see their sphere of influence on the map. If you have a saved game before the end, try finding a few races, including the one that announces your defeat. See what their sphere of influence does.  ;)

It's weird that he'd get the announcement without ever meeting the [Insert Alien Species Name Here], especially since they cover a quarter of the entire map and move right over Sol before the game's over.

I have compiled a version of the official 0.3 beta source (not CVS) that has the Kohr-Ah victory pushed back by 250 years. The drawback is that you'll have to start a new game in order for it to work...

I can send you the exe you if you want.

Ah ha! Thanks again! Now I have compiled a version that supposedly works with savegames as well ;)

A Win32 executable of the latest CVS, that is.

250 years? Egad, that's enough time to strip-mine the entire galaxy, and wipe out every sphere of influence in existance! :o

On the other hand, I'd like to see just how "geometrically" the Slylandro probes will multiply in that game. Who knows, they may be the ones to conquer the galaxy after all! ;D

That would be a sweet idea!

**Watchs 25 Probes pop up each day. Then runs till the ship is uttlery pinned and surrounded in a star system.

Even if probes have 100% spawn chance, that only means 1 probe per day (just like the beginning if you leave for HS first).

Any chance that someone might consider building an option into the game to delay the ending for as long as the player wants?  Or anything like that?  I for one always enjoyed exploration and hate being rushed to complete the game before I'm ready.  I always preferred that aspect of the Starflight games.

hmm...

Well other than the fact that it would be encouraging cheating and thus lessen the fun of the game - the team wants to make a faithful copy of SC2 - Without cheats or any other kind of thing like that......

Understandable, I suppose.  But to me, such an option would make the game considerably more fun to play, and it seems I may not be alone.  That's why I asked if it could be made an option.  I think most of us have played this game before, and if we want play the game a bit differently, even cheat a little, that should be entirely up to us.

I agree.  I think there should be a menu option for it, or maybe a command line switch, so it would be a little more difficult.  I compiled a 16 year version, but I haven't tested it yet because I am in mid-game.  I love this game, I've beat it, and now I'd like to leisurely explore the map.  There are already save editors and stuff like that, so I don't see how adding a year-count setting will cause a problem.  If people are going to cheat, they're going to cheat.  Changing the years until the game ends is more like adding a difficulty setting than cheating.

Excellently stated!  Please consider doing something like this.

Please.

Game constant like this will likely end up in a human-editable (XML) file.
Changing the end date to your wishes should be easy enough then. I'm not so sure about an option in a config menu.

That would be perfect.  Quite a few people wouldn't even look in an XML file, so you'd really have to want to change that value if you did.

I agree - Because the game is not near as good if you aren't rushed in some way or can't take your time mining every planet. It keeps a challenging perspective to the game, which after you beat it - the feature will come in handy.......

I for one would think changing the end year boreing.  I also don't see why exploring every system in the sector would be fun.  After a while they all just start to look the same (Wow this system has 4 planets in it.  Dang not another Urea world).  Knowing that you have a time limit creates a sense of urgency which in my opinion makes the game more fun.  I have also only seen the Kohr-ah start to move once out of all the times I have played.  The game gives you plenty of time to build up your ship and fleet.

About cheats/modifications.  The only modification I would like is the ability to take the flagship from your save game file and use it in the super melee.  Wouldn't it be great to have your flagship and also the flagship of your pal fight to the death against each other?

That would be a realy neat feature (probobly not till the version 1.0 is released though).  You could select the vindicator and configure it and so could your pal.  Of course ore would be pointless but still a fun idea.  You could pit your fleet against thiers with the vindicator the last ship or something neat like that...

ideas abound.

Maybe it could be handled like the Apocalypse feature in Archon II.  When you're tied, or just tired, you can initiate a Vindicator war.  :D

Can anyone send me a copy of this executable?  Drop me a PM so I can tell you my email if you can...

(EDIT) Anybody?  On second thought, this forum has a lot of "Guests", I better keep my email in PMs only :P

(EDIT) Har, guess I'm out of luck.
