Steve Martin as Inspector Jacques Clouseau. I think this will have a greater impact on the older viewers than the younger. Although Peter Sellers wasn't French(he was English) he pulled off a really good French Accent which I doubt even Steve Martin can hold a candle to. My point is much clearer if you have allready seen one of the Peter Sellers/Clouseau films. Title: Re: Seeing this Offended me.... Post by: VOiD on August 30, 2004, 10:44:56 pm From what I've heard about the project, Steve Martin will not try to copy Peter Seller's brilliant original Closeau, but try to reinvent or reimagine the character from his own point of view. I admit, that doesn't sound too promising, but if anyone should do it, I'd rather it was Steve Martin than, say, Jim Carrey.
Title: Re: Seeing this Offended me.... Post by: Vassago_Umara on September 03, 2004, 01:47:47 am I hope Steve Martin gets back to some of his older style comedy, rather than this family comedy crap he has been making recently.
Title: Re: Seeing this Offended me.... Post by: VOiD on September 03, 2004, 03:58:56 am You never know, maybe this will be the film where he returns... :)
Title: Re: Seeing this Offended me.... Post by: Zeep-Eeep on September 03, 2004, 07:13:47 am I think the idea of making a new Closeau film is rather in poor taste.
The last one, in which Closeau (reportedly) dies was a good wrap up and tribute to Peter Sellers. Making a new one, would, in my opinion, cheapen the work and memory of Mr. Sellers. Title: Re: Seeing this Offended me.... Post by: VOiD on September 04, 2004, 02:13:21 am I don't really see how making anything new from the same source will automatically cheapen the original work. If you are right, though, I think this film did more to "cheapen" Seller's than anything Steve Martin will ever do. :) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108187/
(This paragraph contains spoilers) I assume the "final" film you're referring to, is "Curse of the Pink Panther" (1983). When the film opens, Closeau has already mysteriously disappeared; indeed Sellers had died during the production of the previous film (Trail of the Pink Panther, 1982). However, due to the miracles of modern plastic surgery, it turns out,Closeau has altered his looks: he now looks exactly like Roger Moore. No, I'm not kidding. Roger Moore plays Closeau in this film. I don't know about you, but I consider that a bit more offensive; the film was released a short time after the previous one, obviously to cash in on the Pink Panther name. To me, that cheapens Seller's memory a lot more than someone picking up the concept twenty years later. Title: Re: Seeing this Offended me.... Under almost any other context, I'd agree with you. But I have to admit, after Man on the Moon, Carrey might be able to do a perfect imitation of Sellers. Title: Re: Seeing this Offended me.... Post by: Defender on September 04, 2004, 12:43:44 pm in "man on the moon", jim plays andy kaufman so well its freakin scary... its like he was posessed or something. in batman, he was the joker, no boubt about it, but the inspector? im not too sure about that. but to the topic, i dont think steve martin has it in him to play the inspector either. i just dont see it. then again, i was never big on the pink panther movies growing up. though i did find the cartoons harlarious. i really cant think of a substitute. ill have to think about this for a while.
~DEFIANT Title: Re: Seeing this Offended me.... Post by: Zeep-Eeep on September 04, 2004, 06:58:39 pm If you could get a french accent out of him, I think Rowen Atkinson (the Mr. Bean guy) would make a better Closeau. The character of Mr. Bean
had a lot of the same mannerisms and mis-cordination as Closeau. Title: Re: Seeing this Offended me.... Anyway I don't agree with the role of Clouseau not becausse of that, but because it is simply a physically demanding role, I would think that John Cleese would be better suited for it since Physical comedy is HIS act, assuming of course his body can still take it. Basil Faulty anyone? Title: Re: Seeing this Offended me.... Post by: Lukipela on September 12, 2004, 05:00:01 pm I partially agrre wtih you Term, John Cleese is absolutely brilliant. But I wonder if he could be french as well as the dear inspector. There's something fundamentally british about him that could prove hard to shake.
Atkinson on the other hand could mayhap do much better. Anyone who has seen both Bean and the Blackadder saga knows that he can switch between very different roles when the need occurs. Steve Martin might be able to pull it off, but I doubt it. All in all, I think the inspector should be allowed to rest in piece. Title: Re: Seeing this Offended me.... Post by: Halleck on October 21, 2004, 07:39:02 am Steve martin? Ugh. Remind me not to go see it.
On a less stomach-wrenching note, what is everyone's favorite Peter Sellers flick? For me it's a tie between The Mouse That Roared and Dr. Strangelove. Title: Re: Seeing this Offended me.... Post by: Zeep-Eeep on October 21, 2004, 07:42:26 am While I have to give Dr. Strangelove its props, I have to go with
either the original Pink Panther or Shot In The Dark. Title: Re: Seeing this Offended me.... Post by: VOiD on October 21, 2004, 10:47:44 am Although I'll probably have to go with either the first Pink Panther film or Dr. Strangelove, close behind for me are The Party, 1968, and Lolita, 1962 (a 'serious' role he pulls off very well).
