Wow.  Very well done.  The starbase animation in UQM, though simple now, is still one of the prettiest I've seen in a game.

excuse me while I grab my jaw.. It dropped..

That's... A..... mazing!!!!!
(I bet it rendered so slow because of the damn huge screen size...)

Superb. What's that made with?

What Codec do I need to play this file? I recently reformatted so I dont have any codecs installed at the moment =\

That is absolutally the best animation for this game I have seen, without a doubt. :o

WoW!!!!! Nicely done!

I really hope that somehow you guys could get this in the game(after he finishes it and ofcourse only if possible).

If you could loop a full orbit of it.. then ya. That would be awsome.

Wow, very cool. Amazingly rendered. Looks like it came out of a professional 3D animated cartoon.

Oh, if only you had locked the camera in place at the end and let the shot linger for a second or two, then I could have looped it and made something a little longer than this:

Starbase animation with sound (http://www.submedia.net/~nic/uqm/starbase2.avi)

All hail iMovie.  :)

That is one cool animation! You know, with this level of animation technology at our disposal, it shouldn't be impossible to make at least *something* to replace the opening and ending movies from the originals... :)

Not in the vision of a 'pure port'....

Still, that is one kickass clip...maybe, if you were so inclined, you could do other cool stuff, like the Vindicator docking/undocking etc...THAT would be cool!.

Yeah, and then someone could make something that plays these movies in UQM...  :)

Well, with the remixed music in place it is already not a 'pure port' per se.

And how exactly would that fit in with the aforementioned 'pureness' if it is to be used in the game? ;)

Seriously, though. Making a new intromovie DOES make sense, as long as the rights to the original intro lies in legal limbo. Such a clip should not, of course, be a part of the actual game download, but, like the remixed music, as an addon.

It would not have to be a lot of work. The main objective is to focus on the written text, like the original does, with the visualizations serving as a nice backdrop, a supplement. At the moment, the game starts with no real explanation as to why you're actually there, so some sort of intro IS necessary, IMO.

What about the old Sc2 PC intro? They're not allowed to use that one?

It looks very good. But just two minutes to animate? What did you start out with?

Exaggeration, prehaps =p

To go wild, why not re-animate at least some of the species' portraits?

I dunno just get latest from divx.com or search klite codec pack for no spyware divx codec.

that's not really a problem it's just rendering.

well yes nice idea but will take hours if not days  to make it all alone so no. oh and making it look good will take much more time also =]

I just created a camera and animated it and rotated the center, and added a bit mblur  not really a problem that should take long.

A looped version of a full orbit could fit nicely into the game </pointing out the obvious>

True, but you'd not be the only one putting in a lot of unpaid work to make this port... :) Besides, there must be someone out there who are willing and able to aid you.

Give me an education on how to animate and do everything, and i'll help...
(I actually chose programming as a subject for school, before I found out its 100% pointless...9 weeks and I learnt more programming from my graphics Calculator =p)

Well.. I can help, a bit.. I think..
I have 3dsmax 6 also, and might be able to do some rendering (even though I have a craptacular 500mhz PC.. Perhaps someone with a fast PC and 3dsmax6 can do the rendering for you? ^^)

I dont think other ppl rendering can help me cuz you will need to send me the uncompressed version anyway for best quality and every scene will be summed up as at least 200 mb so it will be faster to render than send.

Easy and tasty "the Day of Atonement" to ALL the jews here(2?).

But am I right in assuming you'd need assistance in, for instance, building 3d objects out of the 2d artwork in SC2? Or has this work already been done, by you or others?

Also, I assume it is possible for someone else with 3d max 6 to put together a quick movie, and then sending it to you, so you can make it look better, and do the rendering?

If the file size prohibits people from assisting because it takes to long do download, there IS the existence of snail-mail...

Sorry if I seem a bit pushy, but I'm eager to see what an entire intro movie of this quality could look like...  ::)

the Star Control fan community isn't really big, there were many enthusiastic people like Barak segal and mango who recruited to the army and probably dont care about it(=grew up:)).
I doubt anyone will like to animate...
as for the models I have all of the starcontrol models exepct for the Sa-Matra which I couldnt convert cuz the texture is made out of plugins.
Some of the modelsl are untextured (like the yehat*) and I need to retexture them all over again but it's not a big problem.

*here for example
(http://www.classicgaming.com/starcontrol/fan/images/krish-yehat.jpg)
retexture:

easy fast for all those who are eating!

Why is the second picture so different from the one above it? The bottom one is too smooth to be a real ship, IMHO, it looks organic.

Title: Re: Starbase animation
Post by: Chrispy on September 25, 2004, 09:09:01 pm
It could be made out of really big parts

Title: Re: Starbase animation
Post by: Art on September 25, 2004, 11:38:09 pm
I disagree; the bottom one looks much more real, or at least more like a ship that's seen use -- the scoring and discoloration on the surface from micrometeorite collisions, flying through the atmosphere, and so on. Untextured CG models tend to look like shiny plastic toys, which is one reason I often prefer 2D graphics to 3D ones when the 3D ones aren't detailed.

Title: Re: Starbase animation
Post by: VOiD on September 26, 2004, 11:04:07 am
One of the things that's always bothered me about most SF series on TV since computer animation started gaining popularity in the early 90s, is that the ships always seem to be fresh from the cleaner's. I mean, they're squeaky clean! Unless there's an enormous force of unemployed spacemen waiting to scrub the windshield every time there's a delay at a wormhole, I really don't think it's very plausible.

Title: Re: Starbase animation
Post by: Sander Scamper on September 26, 2004, 01:07:16 pm
Of course, the one above it looks like plastic, but the one below it doesn't look mechanical, IMHO. Keep the line and boltings on the hull, and maybe add a rivet or something to make it actually look like a machine.
Of course, thats just my opinion, and after playing Eve for so long, I may be slightly biased. =p
