Title: Sc2 rights?
Post by: Johan Bogsman on October 16, 2004, 10:26:58 pm
I was just wondering that if this site has the rights for starcontrol why not make a completely new one? and even if not what would be really cool is if you could somehow get SC2 on one of the new handhelds with wireless melees or something...just a thought

That's the thing. They don't have the rights to it. Toys For Bob (the guys who made the game) don't have the rights to it either. Accolade died or something so I forget who does have the rights, but I'm sure they are jerks.

That's only the trademark "Star Control". TFB have the rights to the characters and the copyright to the code. The latter they licensed to us under the GPL.

As for handhelds: go right ahead, the code is there.

Somewhat related: If I were to paint new art slides (or 'sprites') for UQM, would i have to worry about palette? I heard UQM can't use the slides cuz of legal issues.

Hmm I'm not sure...though if you were to do it and distribute it 'privately' Its not really worth the people who own SC2's bother to sue you.

Where did you hear that? I thought they couldn't use the 3do cutscenes because of legal issues, not the slides.

Oh, and on that note- does anybody know how to get UQM to display the intro and ending slideshows?

The Core team is gonna put them in with the next patch.

Neato!  I will await it with anticipation.

There are indeed no legal problem with the slides.
As for making new ones, I don't think the palette should be a problem. Resolution might, but the code needs to be adapted to be more flexible in this respect anyhow.

so what you're saying is that unless whoever gives up the rights to UQM it isn't possible.

is it not possible to make a sequel with the things that you could use because (though it would probably take alot of work) if it brought Starcon back into production business...whatever that would be WELL worth it.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. UQM is an open-source game, and it is expected that it will also be open-content eventually. It is entirely possible, and legal, to make your own sequel. See TimeWarp (http://timewarp.sourceforge.net/) as an example.

As for TimeWarp we have permission from TFB to use UQM content for our  new sequel. We are working on it in TW-Light project:

http://tw-light.berlios.de/

We have already a complete plot, a dialog editor and some game graphics. Currently we are looking into filling the team ranks with Dialog writers and Graphic designers.

I hope the TW-light story writers have more imagination than the people who set up that web site.

If I am not mistaken activision owns a substantial amount (if not all) of accolades intelectual property (read activision bought out accolade).  In fact it seems that the companies (that I am aware of) that went for higher up on the alphabet (above activision) are now owned in part or in whole by activision...

Toys for Bob have the rights to everything they need to make a new game. They just don't have the "Star Control" trademark (see http://uqm.stack.nl/wiki/index.php?title=Star_Control_Trademark). They also don't have the rights to the .duk videos, and (at least part of) the original manuals and star maps.
But with the characters, they could make a new sequel.

Painful because true. Give us one day.
