Title: Forum User Status
Post by: Azarule on December 07, 2002, 02:10:06 pm
How many other people hear are still forum 'Newbies' even though we got here on like day one ?  :P

Just noticed that there's a counter.........and it says NEWBIE next to my name !  :-X

Makes you go mad? I think the measuring system is not good enough. It should count the per cents. Until you have written 1% of all messages, you are a newbie. When you have written 2,25% of all messages, you are something else and so on.
Sound silly? Nope. :P

You are 6 posts away from being a "Regular."

Hmmm, so 50 is the "Regular" threshold?  Well considering, I lost like 10-15 in the "great crash of 11-02".... I'm only posting here to get a freebie post added to my total ;)

Just curious, was is it a concious decision to make the rankings post-based rather than time-based??  It seems slightly inaccurate to label a someone who posts infrequently over a long period of time a "Newbie", whereas relatively-new-yet-verbally-incontinent types (like myself) get labelled as "Regular"

Or is that just how YaBB works?

Title: Re: Forum User Status

That is how YaBB works.

To bring up this ancient thread once more, just out of interest : Is there a title after "Too much spare time"? And ifso, when do you get it?

Title: Re: Forum User Status

I believe there is a little "modify" button above and to the right of each post. †I'll check to make sure it works...
/edit: Yes indeed, it does.  ;D

Congratulations Shiver, I don't think I've ever see nsuch a blatant rip off of a topic to raise ones own status  ;D

Title: Re: Forum User Status
Post by: Scott on February 18, 2003, 06:09:33 pm
When (if ever) do we get custom titles? Every other board I'm on lets you put what you want at a certain point, not being able to control this is causing me great emotional pain.

Title: Re: Forum User Status
Post by: Omni-Sama on February 19, 2003, 07:38:37 am
I was happy to put in my little "Zebranky-Killer" title when I first signed up...  I think the board already supports that kinda customization, where you can give yourself a custom little blurb, but it isn't an abusable power.  Either that or I've put information into a spot that was meant for another purpose.  Still, it seems to work for me.

Title: Re: Forum User Status
Post by: Azarule on February 19, 2003, 10:21:51 am
Just an FYI, if you read earlier in this thread, you'll see my getting gently reprimanded for needlessly posting.  I don't know what an extreme punishment would be, but I thought I should mention it  :)

Title: Re: Forum User Status
Post by: Death 999 on February 19, 2003, 08:11:54 pm
They will modify the CVS server so that whenever you try to download uqm, you get a buggy version, and all the music tracks are replaced with remixed spice girls songs sung by the chipmunks.

Title: Re: Forum User Status
Post by: meep-eep on February 20, 2003, 01:34:51 am
Actually, the titles used aren't exactly the defaults for YaBB. You'll notice it when people get really high posting numbers.
And I'd like to remind people that it's very easy to delete posts AND users if we feel the need.

Title: Re: Forum User Status
Post by: Lukipela on February 20, 2003, 02:08:08 am
*Cough cough* I think they're talking about you Shiver :)

Seriously though, there are titles over Too much Spare Time? I suppsoe we'll get to see when Deah_999 passes 200 which should be any day now if we have a long wait ahead of us or a bit shorter....

EDIT:

I forgot to ask, but I was wondering (and forgive me if it sounds like a newbiequestion, it's just something I never thought of) NEMT and all the other guests. what's the advantage (if any) of being a guest instead of a registered user, or vice versa. I mean, you've been around for a bit, so why haven't you registered earlier? just curiosity....

The mods won't delete my posts because the topic wouldn't make sense if there were people discussing stuff I said, yet what I said was missing. Right mods? †;D

Oh nevermind, I'll just get rid of everything.

Well, it was fun while it lasted Shiver... then again, jumping off a cliff without a parachute can be pretty fun, too... but you don't see me doing it all the time! † :P

It's not quantity that matters, my children... it's the content of the messages that truly matters. †Either that or it's the size that counts...  In that area, I'm often lacking.   :-/

Well, I guess the advantages of a registered user is a reserved nickname plus "instant messeges" and stuff. The guests enjoy the 'no password' plus.
They also aren't titled "Newbies" for 50 (or was that 100?) posts ;)

Title: Re: Forum User Status

Just to make a quick note on this lovely Forum User Status topic. I'm now nearing 250 posts, and I'm hoping that is the magic barrier to get something other than "Too Much Spare TIme". Please? I want a new title! It's a hunderd posts since the last one! (And admittedly, just a few days, talk about verbally incontinent).

EDIT: Ok, I got my new title, so I guess I should shut up. I just wanted to point out that I don't enjoy it very much... I guess I'm just never happy. At least the rest of you know what to look forward to, so I wint be surprised if all other ppl stop their posts at 250.....

Now this is insulting. Is there somewhere we can change these titles? Not make them praise, so we don't get spam-for-numbers ::cough cough::... but at least not make them disgusting?

Title: Re: Forum User Status
Post by: Lukipela on February 25, 2003, 08:38:31 pm
I just wanted to state that I agree COMPLETELY with Death_999 on this. I mean, I don't think it's very funny, and it's not even close to bordering on the brink of good taste. Please tell me, is the next title any better than this, or should I just give up and shut up?

I guess Meep-Eep's humor back then was too much for you ;D Post-count titles are disabled completely for now. If I get good suggestions, I might add them back later.. we'll see.

Cheers

EDIT: Suggestions part 1.

Instead of newbie we could have :Interloper, Rogue, Newcomer, Rookie

Instead of regular: Commoner, Allied, Social.

Ōnstead of Too Much Spare Time: Space Jock, Starship Captain, Speaker of Tongues.

Instead of Verbal Whatever: Obssesive, Wise, Well-Versed, Talkative, Master Ranter.

instead of ? : Precursor, Lord of Dance, Talkmaster, Discussionist.

Feel free to add any, or rearrange, ro comment.

Title: Re: Forum User Status

Although I'm not sure about where these would go level-wise, I like them  ;D :

Umgah Prankster
Special Spathi Concealer
Arilou 'Visitation' Specialist

And so on, and so on.

Title: Re: Forum User Status
Post by: Censored on February 26, 2003, 09:47:26 pm
Now if you REALLY want to have the spirit of the SC2 universe in this forum, you could add a "race" option, so if I choose ZoqFotPik for example, I could have -
newbie - Zebranky food
regular - Frungy champion
too much spare time - Stinger commander
.. etc. etc.
;)

Title: Re: Forum User Status

Human : Grunt, Captain, Commander, Overlord

Arilou : Trainee Abductor, Cow examinator, *Smell* controller, Nggn catcher

Umgah: Amusing, Funny, Hilarious, Over the Edge.

Title: Re: Forum User Status

Well done!! †:D

Isn't 5-star the maximum though? hmm!

Kzer-Za: Fusion blast, Fighter craft, Dreadnaught Lord, Race Enslaver
Kohr-Ah: ?, ?, Marauder Captain, Species Cleanser †(ok need help on this one :P)

hahah and this one could have lots of possibilities (not sorted):
Shofixti: "leprous, non-functional sex organ";"pitiful imitation of six-weeks dead Dhrang";"cowardly slug-spawn";"slithering eater of putrid hairballs";"weakling fancier of herd animal excrement";"toothless, piebald, impotent roof-rabbit";"limp, bloodless sack of decaying flesh Ur-Quan!";"dripping, snout-rotted little furball";
"performer of ribald feats of unsurpassed fertility"

hehe.. I wouldn't know which ones fit though; perhaps these are too blunt?

;)

Title: Re: Forum User Status
Post by: Mika on February 28, 2003, 03:26:39 am
YaBB only supports five different titles based on post counts. There's not going to be any race option and such, it's not possible with the forum software.

I think I'll now choose the titles from what you've proposed.

Title: Re: Forum User Status
Post by: Lukipela on February 28, 2003, 03:27:26 am
Well, at least we presented plenty of alternatives to choose from... How soon can we expect our brand new titles?

I believe some day this will go to the same as mtgnews.com has... most of the members have about 3000+ posts on the boards. I am a rare sight; only 150. :P

I just can't understand how people get to post messages so darn many times. I mainly check the site once per day, answer only to threads that interest me. Write something down, and get back to IRC. ;)

And I'm still quite an old member of this board... :P

Hmm... surprising what some people see as insulting. I'm not attached to the titles, but I know we all had a good laugh at them in the channel when I suggested them there. It could be something cultural. Here in the Netherlands, you can make jokes about just about whatever you like. I know Americans are very 'conservative' in this aspect though.
Lukipela, Death_999, I'm curious, what countries are you from?

The new titles I find rather boring though (as if anyone cares).

Btw, the next title in the list would have been "Hyperactive insomniac on speed." IIRC.

Title: Re: Forum User Status
Post by: Lukipela on March 01, 2003, 06:15:12 pm
I didn't feel that insulted, for me it was more that it seemed to be a bit of a pointless and unfunny title. And isn't the idea for the ranks to be amusing and intersting. that just doesnt make me smile at all, around where i live it's more of an adoscelent humour..

For the record, I'm a finn.

German: white-lab-coat wearing, weird English talking, Volkswagen driving mad scientist working on a personal plan for my own Welteroberung  ;)

I prefer Finnish vodka to the Russian airplane fuel (not to be taken seriously, ScaN! I'm just joking about that methanol mix!)

Omni-Sama: You take on the world, too? But I am the Brain! Wanna be Pinky, narf?

And Death_999: That does make you a Yehat - Scottish and German ancestry surely makes a good warrior clan member!

Title: Re: Forum User Status
Post by: Lukipela on March 03, 2003, 08:09:05 pm
Nope, although we drink more Kossu than vodka. It's just that someone outside of Finalnd would never have heard of that, and it's quite close to Vodka anyway. And sauna is a finnish word, and THE place for a knifefight. We're way tougher than our neighbours :)

Mmh - can't say that I can vividly picture a knife-fight in a sauna. Not that the confined space wouldn't make it interesting, but there's way too little space for an audience and innocent by-standers

Post by: GermanNightmare on March 05, 2003, 08:30:56 am
That's actually a very funny show - even when it's dubbed in German, it still has the original flair to it.

I would almost take a bet that inside one Dynarri there's a whole lot of mechanics and stuff and that this one Dynarri in particular is just one of Brain's constructs in one of his plans to take over the world.

That would explain the Kohr-Ahs' suspicion towards sentient life - they just fear it's not real but there's Pinky & the Brain inside, so they just annihilate everyone to make sure †:D

Title: Re: Forum User Status
Post by: GermanNightmare on March 06, 2003, 04:46:38 am
Wow wow wow - the guy shifting his glass-eye IS from a Schwarzenegger movie, but it was "Last Action Hero".

Other favorites: T1, T2 (looking forward to T3) and of course Predator 1 & 2 (although Arnie ain't in it) as well as all the Alien movies.

I'm just glad that in the SC2-universe there ain't anything like "Aliens"-aliens or "Predator"-predators  :D
The Kohr-Ahs' bone-pit is close the ultimate Predators' paradise.

Title: Re: Forum User Status
Post by: Lukipela on March 07, 2003, 04:22:50 pm
Yeah, and the Kohr-Ah are somehow a lot more spooky than the Predators. I mean, the Predators are just brutish hunters, highly evolved technologically mayhap, but socially (from what we see anyway) still tribal. Whereas the Kohr-Ah are advanced intelligent and just insane.

I have to say i wasn't too fond of P2 though, even though I loved number 1.

And Aliens are just animals. Lethal ones yes, like ZEX beast, but still no more than that. Even the Ilwrath are scaryer than that, cuz they do the same maiming out of pure spite.

Title: Re: Forum User Status
Post by: GermanNightmare on March 07, 2003, 06:14:18 pm
Animals maybe, but then again, we are animals as well, only highly intelligent.
Having spent some time on the matter - the Aliens aren't just your lethal, neck-biting chest-bursting animal. They are highly intelligent and adapatable and therefore considered semi-sentient. They are just so alien that our definition of an intelligent species doesn't fit.

I'd like to see the face of a Kohr-Ah after spoken his words "Over a thousand races have made such a claim..." and then you present him a gift of surrender et voilŠ: Alien in wrapper with a red ribbon. cccchhhhhhhhhHHHHHHH - Snap!

Title: Re: Forum User Status
Post by: Lukipela on March 07, 2003, 07:05:26 pm
Are they though? I've seen the movies and read quite a lot of the comics when I was younger, and I always thought they could be classified like sharks or some such. Lethal yes, but acting totally on instinct and therefore not sentient. I mean, they don't utilize any  sort of tech, for any purpose. They just feed and breed.

And yes, we are animals, as are the Kohr-Ah. but we act (or should act) upon logic deductions and reasonings. Not upon primal instincts.
