Title: illegal instruction in installer on XP
Post by: John Reese on December 25, 2004, 10:37:54 am
I can't install Ur-Quan Masters 0.3 on XP with the .exe I downloaded from sc2.sf.net.  I get this error message:

---------------------------
16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
---------------------------
C:\DOCUME~1\DANREE~1\Desktop\UQM-03~1.EXE
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:053f IP:0119 OP:65 63 74 20 61 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
---------------------------
Close   Ignore
---------------------------

Any suggestions?

16-bit MS-DOS subsystem? Sounds like a corrupt EXE or an attempt to start the EXE from a 16-bit MS-DOS program. Check that the installer EXE has been correctly downloaded (it should be 987 kB) and make sure that you aren't starting it from a DOS application.

You're right.  Apparently I right-clicked and saved an html file whose extension was .exe and apparently if you double-click on such a file, Windows will try to run it.  Now that I've downloaded it right, it seems to work well.
