Title: ASCII Art
Post by: Shiver on January 03, 2005, 02:22:57 am
Hey, I've noticed that most of these GameFAQs guides have an ASCII title at the top. The one I made for SC2 doesn't, and I can't do ASCII worth crap. Could someone help me out here? Line limit is 78 characters or so. Naturally, I'll put your name in the credits.

Is ansi the stuff where they make text and grafics out of / and | and stuff?

If so, sorry, can't help you

No, that's ASCII art, art made using characters from the ASCII character set. ANSI is the "American National Standards Institute". The connection with ASCII art is probably ANSI colour codes to display characters in colour on terminals (etc.) that support that.
I'd advice against using them for a FAQ though, as they will look like garbage where they are not supported (like in notepad). But I suspect Shiver meant ASCII art anyhow.

Wow self, way to show off your computer illiteracy.

Perhaps this (http://www.text-image.com/convert/) may be of some help to you. Of course, you'll likely have to make some modifications to the output so you'll pure ASCII art (as opposed to HTML-enhanced).

I haven't actually tried to convert an image, but that page you linked to also has a link "ASCII", to this page (http://www.text-image.com/convert/ascii.html). So modifications to the output should be unnecessary.

Try the code tag?

Code:

     .*=7=!.
        *J$7*'
    .!¦!'       .=AJ,'*,.',   ....
  '=37!'.  .    '.*=77C(' (%J'*$CJC*$3!.CC773J7(*(!,'.   .. .¦7(!,'.
 ,3%* .'*¦=7! .($*(#3,C#J'33*.$3.'%C=A%CJ7..%%'**5$($7..(JC* ..    75%=$J=,
.J%= .JC$%!',,C%3.!AJ'C%=¦JJ.*$= .J3*J=J3= .33. ,%J.J%!=A73%*(%C.  =A3.3%C.
'$$¦  *'$$, 'J7%J !%3JC*.¦C7.*J(  7J*7.*7( .CJ..¦3J(J=,$3.*%J=A7   ($J.J$7
'JJ=   '3J'.C¦,3J(C3C7J¦ *77'.== .==,=. ¦( .77' ,C77¦.*37 .J3($=   (3C.C3=

There, you can almost see it now, but the font should be even smaller.

[font="Lucida Console"]
     .*=7=!.
        *J$7*'
    .!¦!'       .=AJ,'*,.',   ....
  '=37!'.  .    '.*=77C(' (%J'*$CJC*$3!.CC773J7(*(!,'.   .. .¦7(!,'.
 ,3%* .'*¦=7! .($*(#3,C#J'33*.$3.'%C=A%CJ7..%%'**5$($7..(JC* ..    75%=$J=,
.J%= .JC$%!',,C%3.!AJ'C%=¦JJ.*$= .J3*J=J3= .33. ,%J.J%!=A73%*(%C.  =A3.3%C.
'$$¦  *'$$, 'J7%J !%3JC*.¦C7.*J(  7J*7.*7( .CJ..¦3J(J=,$3.*%J=A7   ($J.J$7
'JJ=   '3J'.C¦,3J(C3C7J¦ *77'.== .==,=. ¦( .77' ,C77¦.*37 .J3($=   (3C.C3=
 (CC,  ,CC.¦7,(J7,!J=.=J*'(=! ,(*!=,*=. ¦( .==' '=(*=**C( .CC(J=   ¦JC.7J=
 .(==' ,7=,C==!7= *7=..¦=*,(=*..*!' ,*. !*.'(¦, ,=(.(=,=(.'==!C(   !C7.=C(
  ,(=¦.,=(¦=*.'=(.!!,.  ''.,((!'.      ... ',!.,=*¦='*=¦*=¦   !7=.(7(
   *==!*===!  '*'      .*¦(¦*,'...    '*'!(=¦.!=¦   !==.¦=¦
   .(==¦(¦!'   .',**!!!,       .''..!(¦', !==.¦=¦
    !==!'             .'*! !==.¦=¦
    !=(.            .'!==.¦=¦
   '(('              ,!¦=*(=¦
 .!(¦.             .,!¦¦.
.*!,             .',.

Plain as day in the slylandro homeworld, but once I remembered what it was supposed to look like, I could at least see the 'C' and the 'l'

The Image/ASCII converter works fine for just that- images. In my opinion it works poorly for anything else, especially title graphics, where legibility is key. It's difficult to make out the title that it produced, even though it resembles the SC2 title in shape. I'd reccomend either trying again with a very high-contrast version of the SC2 title screen or just having a go at it yourself using the good ol' pipes and hyphens.

You might also want to check out the collections of Figlet fonts over at http://www.textfiles.com/, such as Big (http://www.textfiles.com/art/big.flf) or Contessa (http://www.textfiles.com/art/contessa.flf).

I went over the ASCII manually changing the capital letters and numbers to "-", "=", and "*". It looked pretty lame. Maybe I should've stuck in "#" as a backbone? Nevermind, I'm not using that.

The Figlet fonts are a no-go. I like the blurry shape of the Star Control II title a little bit better.

Perhaps you could modify the original image so it only shows the text and none of the "fluff" around it? That way, when it gets translated into ASCII, it will be easy to read.

Ah, that generator works well. Thanks for the link.
Heh, it uses figlet fonts.

I copied the best-looking titles into a text file, which is available on my server at:
http://eliot.bambi.net/dump/sc2_fonts.txt

Please consider using one of these for the sake of legibility.

I kinda liked 'Thin' and 'Tinker toy' too. Tinker toy looks a bit like connected stars.

Much more legible, but it's a shame you had to ditch the grandiose sweep...

Looks good to me! And I can read what it says now without standing back five feet and squinting, so that's a plus.

Ah, the perennial star wars ASCII movie. It's cool they've got a web interface for it now, and a fast forward feature. Still, nothing beats opening a telnet session with towel.blinkenlights.nl .

More random ascii stuff:

Old Commodore 'ascii art' (http://www.gweep.net/~shifty/portfolio/c64/images/rundmc.jpg).
The japanese character set is pretty nice too, they have more line stuff to work with.
