Title: Next Release?
Post by: nk_ on January 19, 2005, 10:50:06 pm
It's been quite awhile since the last release.  Anyone know the status on when the next official release (v0.4 I assume) will be?

Taken from the FAQ:

Quote

Q: When is the next version of UQM going to be out?

A: The best answer is "when its ready".  You can also check out the current open bugs in the Bugzilla database.  You can also view the change log since the last major release.  The larger that list gets and the smaller the bug list gets, the closer to the next release.  Mostly importantly, please consider that all of the members of this project are doing this in their spare time and have Real Life commitments.

I don't say this to sound like a parrot, but its true. However we do know that after 0.4 will be 1.0.

There's going to be another release? :o

There are certainly rumours of another release. However, it's been
over a year, so don't hold your breath.

Ah, so where's the changelog/buglist that the FAQ mentions?

The forum FAQ links to both the bug database (http://uqm.stack.nl/cgi-bin/bugs/index.cgi) and the changelog (http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/*checkout*/sc2/sc2/ChangeLog?rev=HEAD&content-type=text/plain).

I recently got a message regarding the "bug" I posted being closed in bugzilla, so I know that someone's doing some work.   :)

A know it is not very sure proof, but in UQM Bugzilla "towards 0.4" fixed buglist is almost as long as version 0.3's. To me this tells that 0.4 might be on its way to ethusiastic players this spring. Right? :) I hope I'm right.

Even though the hard working UQM staff well... works hard with UQM, it would be nice if we would get more often these main releases.

0.3 is functional enough that additional releases don't matter much for me. That last set of remixes on the other hand...

I am not capable of speaking for coredev, but I do know that one of the larger roadblocks in the way of the 0.4 release is making the Windows Installer for UQM "not suck".

The crux of the problem, as I understand it, is that those with the required expertise to fix it do not have enough free time to do so, and those with enough free time do not have the required expertise.

If you have some skills in packaging software with NSIS (or any of its analogues, they are by no means married to it), have a look at the current state of affairs re: installation, and if you can, offer up a patch or five to fix the extant problems with it.  That's not to say that once the installer's fixed, they'll cut another release immediately, but I do know that it was expressly mentioned as one of the larger issues they face today.

As for MacOS X, I took some time to make cutting a release a matter of "pushing a button", so to speak.  Whenever they're ready to go, I'm ready to go.  If we can get all the supported platforms in the same state of grace, then many of the objections to "releasing often" go up in smoke.

What problems are they having with NSIS? I have a very limited amount of experience with it... if it's nothing major I might be able to have a whack at it.

Once the intro & ending are included in an official release (http://uqm.stack.nl/cgi-bin/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=46), UQM will be in a state that I'd enjoy giving it out to random people that I'll never see again.

I'm sure the next release will be able to display the intro/ending slides, as said functionality is present in the CVS (unless you are reffering to the DUK movies, that is).

Title: Re: Next Release?
Post by: Culture20 on April 12, 2005, 10:58:50 am
Nope, the PC intro is what I'm referring to.  And, yes, I suppose I could compile the CVS for CDROMs, but telling someone over the 'net to update their content directory from CVS and use the daily from-cvs-auto-executable is a little difficult unless they're a fairly savvy computer user.

The 'changes towards 0.4'-list is now longer than the 0.3-list. It may not mean anything, but I sure hope that is not the case :)

0.4's good enough for public consumption; Time to make a master CD, then give it to a friend of mine with a robot CD duplicator.  Is there any official UQM CD art?  :D

Halleck; time to change your sig.  Might I suggest "0.4 is here... Goose!"?

Perhaps Arne would be up for the task...? He's made quite a few gems (I still would want that amazing cover image of his to be made the official splash screen or similar).

of UQM just hitting the download mirrors really finished my
day on a positive note. Thanks guys.

It's a Mac thing. Cocoa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocoa_%28software%29) is the new object-oriented Mac OS X API. Adding Cocoa hooks is part of adapting UQM to behave like a Mac program on the Mac instead of like a Unix program.

The new triscan scaler looks rough and crumbly to me. I think it is quite weird since it looks most of the time almost exactly the same as I used no scaler. I have to stick to the biadv, which keeps the place of best scaler in UQM for now.

Otherwise it looks, that soon I have to play UQM through again :)

Edit: Hmm. Triscan looks quite good in 640*480 windowed mode, but I prefer fullscreen. Then my flat monitor messes everything up, so the biadv must be used...

Triscan gives the whole game (especially Melee - you don't really notice it in conversation windows) a comic-ish look.. Just look at the Mycon comm screen with it.. Brilliant.. :)

Okay, time to express happyness....

I compiled and played UQM .4 on my Fedora 2 box last night.
So far so good. It installed cleanly and played beautifully.

Two thumbs up to the development team and patch writers.

0.4.

Just one problem with it... There is no option in setup to set fullscreen mode on.

If you're using PC & windows, just edit the shortcut to uqm.exe, put -f to the end of the target -field, for other platforms - no idea.  :P

Title: Re: Next Release?
Post by: vesqu on May 29, 2005, 02:05:18 am
The new 0.4.0 is great, and once again I have decided to play the game through.

However, I find one thing quite irritating. Why The Ur-Quan Masters shows the slide show before the main menu? Wouldn't it be a better idea to make it run when one starts a new game? In addition, the interstellar frungy-league thing makes the starting of UQM very sluggish since Esc or any button won't lead instantly to the main menu. Fade-outs are cool, but I'd like to play UQM, not watch any effects.

I hope my message is heard and changed for the next release (1.0, I presume).

P.S.: I know it is possible to disable the slide show by the command lines, but it doesn't change the problem here.

Post by: meep-eep on May 29, 2005, 02:26:18 am
Showing the intro at startup mirrors the behaviour of Star Control II on the 3DO (though they were DUK movies there).
The IFL logo replaces the SC2 logo saying "Accolade presents".
If you press a key quickly enough, the IFL screen won't be shown at all. But I agree, it would be nice if the slide show could be interrupted during a slide, and not just after one. I suggest you make a bug report for it.
As for what version number the next one will have, that's not determined yet. If we make a lot of progress without having everything we want in yet, then it's not unlikely there's going to be a 0.5.

It works the same on Linux, except the executable is called
uqm, rather than uqm.exe
I believe the default location is

/usr/local/games/bin/uqm

First off, I've been watching this website for a long time now guys.  This game is absolutely great, I can't thank you enough for the time and effort you put into this for all the fans.  Now if I can just manage to find the 3DO version somewhere for the cinematics...

Having a couple minor hitches though.  Running Win Xp Pro, and I can't get the field in shortcut properties to accept any switches.  Keeps telling me that the specified path is not valid.  Also, is there a way to make the settings in Extras stay, or do we have to keep fixing them every time we run the game?

Hit a bug too, will also post this to the bug database.  I was fighting a Yehat with a ZFP, and it killed me the same instant I hit it in the face with the wild tounge attack.  When I had to select my next ship (in full game, not melee) it wouldn't let me choose anything.  Could move the ship selection box around, but it wouldn't let me select a ship, not even the Dark Star precursor ship.

I'm guessing you did something like this:

"C:\Program Files\The Ur-Quan Masters\uqm.exe -f -o -r 800x600 --addon remix"

Which looks for a file named uqm.exe -f -o -r 800x600 --addon remix.  The switches need to go outside the quotation marks.
