Title: Similar games?
Post by: grayfox777 on February 23, 2005, 06:37:55 am
Anyone know any games similar to SC2? Maybe newer ones? Or ones I can find in a store easily? Or download for free?

I played that, it was ok, but not as good as SC2/UQM. It lacked something that I can't really figure out.

Anyone else know any games?

Why aren't there more games like this? There are lots of developers and it's a big world... so you'd think someone would make something similar.

And whatever happened to Timewarp? I never really bothered with it, but now the project link doesn't work. (Edit: Nevermind, I found it)

I'd recommend Aftermath, and when we're finished with it, Starflight 3.

There are other games too, like Starfight or Black Sky or Strange Adventures in Infinite Space, but I haven't had time to try those.

I downloaded Aftermath, but I don't understand what I'm supposed to do.  ???
How do you tell the difference between what's equiped on a ship and what is available to buy?
Do you mine with the laser?
Is there a way to know where the starbases are?  'Cause I think they're in different places each time, or something.

Those are not the only things I don't know... I don't think I understand the basics. I customized the controls, so at least that's one thing i figured out on my own,
I can say it really looks like fun, if I could figure out what to do and how to do it.

Try the home computer versions of Starflight (PC, Amiga, Macintosh). They're much better than the Sega version. I also suggest taking a look at Wazzal.

If you can, play the mac or amiga starflights.

Post by: grayfox777 on February 23, 2005, 11:36:32 pm
I'll look into the PC version of Starflight.

Anyway, can anyone help me with Aftermath? How do I save? When I go to the save/load screen, it won't do anything!
And how do I mine the asteroids?  ???

If anyone has any other games, post those too. After all, that is the true point of this topic.

Anyone played Starfight VI? I know Starfight was mentioned, but this is newer.

Stupid Home of The Underdogs site... everything I download from there is corrupted.  :-/

"Anyway, can anyone help me with Aftermath? How do I save? When I go to the save/load screen, it won't do anything! "

Aftermath is a work in progress, many features are not there yet.

"Anyone played Starfight VI? I know Starfight was mentioned, but this is newer."

Ya, get one of the latest ones.

"Stupid Home of The Underdogs site... everything I download from there is corrupted."

Get Winrar, that should be able to unpack the "corrupted" files.

I thought the save feature is supposed to work, though...  ???
At least I figured out how to mine the asteroids, anyway.

Working on trying to get Starfight VI... found another site where I can download it faster.

The save feature in Aftermath used to work, and then Madgap updated it and it stopped working. Crazy, huh?

yep, that is crazy  :-/

Maybe he'll release a new version soon.

Edit:
I got Winrar, but it's still telling me the zip file is damaged. I downloaded it from a different site, even. What is going wrong here? :-[

You're obviously using Internet Explorer... Internet Explorer is a piece of crap, so therefore..
Get Firefox! (http://www.getfirefox.com)

And if you're still not wanting to see the light:

Quote
Why is BitTorrent/Windows/IE telling me a ZIP file I just downloaded "cannot be found"?

This error occurs because BitTorrent/Windows/IE is not saving the file, but is instead trying to open it from the current (temporary) location. You can fix this as follows:

For Windows XP and above: Go to Control Panel --> Folder Options. Then, click the File Types tab, and browse down to where it says ZIP file. Click the Advanced button, and make sure the option "confirm open after download" is checked.
For Windows 98 and below: You can find the same option under "Tools" menu in the Window Files Manager.

Well...
I already have Firefox. IE is a piece of junk compared to FF. I've been using it for months. I did try d/ling it in IE too, but that didn't work either.

edit:
Is Vega Strike any good? Downloaded it... trying to figure it out. Doesn't seem much like SC2/UQM, though.

Search isn't going so well. I even actually picked up some evil malware somewhere, but that's taken care of now...
I have another topic on another forum, but I don't have many good answers from there either.

Can't find any EV demos... the ones I found are all for Mac. I can't find an X-Beyond The Frontier demo... cnet's download is not working.  Privateer is too old to run on XP (won't even run in DosBox).

Is there anything... like a good UQM fan game...? I mean... it is open source, isn't it?  Or they exist, but none are any good?
???

If you're having trouble with TimeWarp you can try TW-Light (http://tw-light.berlios.de/).

Also, Culture 20 was starting a Star Control mod (http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2365) for Vega Strike (http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/), but as I understand it, his work on that has been put on hold for the tiem being.

Title: Re: Similar games?

Is Timewarp still in development? I've heard conflicting stories about it.

Title: Re: Similar games?
Post by: Halleck on March 03, 2005, 11:59:34 am
The Timewarp codebase is evidently a bit of a mess, so the TW-Light fork was created in an effort to clean it up. If there is active development going on, that would probably be where it's happening. I know that the Timewarp Public Plot Initiative (PPI) is still being discussed and developed.

Not too long ago, I volunteered for the TimeWarp:Legacies project, an attempt at crafting a sequel to sc2, but I haven't heard much from the dev team lately. Admittedly, I haven't been particularily attentive to my duties either.

So the answer is: Yes, but very slowly.

There is russian game like sc2 called "Space rangers", look at

for screenshots. But i don't know did they publish it outside Russia.

This has already been mentioned, but Strange Adventures in Infinite Space (http://www.digital-eel.com/sais/) is a fun little diversion. I got the demo a few days ago, and that alone kept me entertained for a couple of hours. Each game is quite short- maybe fifteen minutes to half an hour from start to finish.

From the HOTU article:
"The game is best described as the condensed version of Star Control: imagine the same sense of humor you have come to know and love in Accolade's classic, minus the grand plot, mix with more intergalactic business savvy, and you'll have a good idea of what SAIS is all about."

Check it out if you get the chance.

Very Nice, I hope you do a sovereign class soon. Great sound too. And of course you can't beat a 3D engine. Hmm, I think I'm becoming a freeware space game addict.

If you don't mind me asking, will your game be open source? I have this crazy pipe dream of a 3D Starflight 4.

Title: Re: Similar games?
Post by: Halleck on March 19, 2005, 07:15:47 am
Er.. if he was planning to make black sky in 3D, he probably would have started developing it as a 3D game, not a 2D one.

If what you want is an open-source 3D space sim, look no further (http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/).

"Er.. if he was planning to make black sky in 3D, he probably would have started developing it as a 3D game, not a 2D one."

Stupid me, I thought it was 3D. It really looks like it is. We might be able to use a new 2D combat engine for Starflight 3, as our current one might need an overhaul. I'd have to ask our programmers about that. Anyway, I'm not trying to pressure anyone, what work you've done, you've earned. But if no one minds, might as well use the free code work.  :)

"If what you want is an open-source 3D space sim, look no further."

Cool, I'll definitly look into that over the weekend. This is turning out to be a very interesting thread.

P.S. We haven't released Starflight 3 (also freeware) yet, but anyone who wants to can check out our website:

Yup. That thar is Vega Strike (which I've been helping out with in recent days). If you wanted to make a starflight mod for Vega Strike, it would be very plausible, and the nice folks over at the VS forums (http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/forums/) are always eager to pitch in some advice.

They already have a Privateer Remake project (http://priv.solsector.net/), which has been in the cooker for quite some time. It is a total conversion mod which re-creates WC:Privateer in the Vega Strike engine. Priv 1.0 (the finished version) came out (http://games.slashdot.org/games/05/03/07/1154252.shtml?tid=202&tid=156&tid=10) a few weeks ago, and is a good example of the flexibility of VS.

That Black Sky game... it's amazing so far! Can't wait to see how it turns out. It's even listed on gamefaqs and gamespot. :o

Well, it says there's an english version on the site, and most of the site is in English. It's kinda confusing though.

Would you say that the Wing Commander mod is better than Vega Strike itself?

Those of you crazy enough to hold any kind of respect for me will now lose it: What was the Wing Command series about, anyway? I never played it.  :-[

Title: Re: Similar games?
Post by: Halleck on March 22, 2005, 12:48:05 pm
Well, Privateer was very open-ended, although it had a main storyline (which is present in the remake). I would say that the Privateer mod is more fun to play than Vega Strike right now. This is mainly because the gameplay is inherited from the original Privateer, which was fully developed, whereas the Vega Strike gameplay is still a work in progress (things will probably be better once the stats are completely re-balanced, preceding the next release). However, the graphics for the privateer mod are also inherited from Privateer to an extent, so you will generally find the graphics to be better in Vega Strike.

while talking about wing commander I saw on amazon that the first three were T but there was a collection of the first three games that was M anyone know why?

Title: Look not upon the three forbidden games!
Post by: Deus Siddis on March 23, 2005, 01:14:04 am
One wing commander game has only one third of the required killing to get an "M" rating. Thus, sold separatly, they can each get a "T" but if delivered in a barrage, they can destroy the goodness of even the most innocent youth. A force this dangerous must be regulated!

It's like gunpowder, the components don't work on their own, but if combined correctly and in the right proportions, hell is unleashed.
