Title: Least favorite ship?
Post by: Shiver on April 20, 2005, 01:30:07 am
I'm not asking about least effective, which is arguably the Umgah. Which ship do you just hate, for whatever reason?

My choice is the Pkunk Fury. It's the fastest ship in the game, yet seems to be lacking agility when controlled by me, the player. It's as wide a target as the Stinger, and due to its hit-n-run nature you have to repeat your approach on the enemy many times. You're going to get shot at a lot. Yeah, and that random reincarnation ability is *annoying* once you see past the cute gimmick. I do not enjoy fighting the same birdy 5 times over, nor do I enjoy winning a battle I should have lost because of some good coin flips. I hate hate hate this goofy flower of a ship.

The Umgah because it's the least effective and the only ship that's junk in my hands.

Jugger or Terminator. Absolute shields are cheesy, doubly so when you can leave them up all the time.
Terminators may eventually run out of juice, but it takes freaking forever. Even when limpeted to complete immobility, it's much faster to ram it into the planet, which bypasses shields.

Syreen penetrator. It's lanky and has a weak weapon, and the "steal crew" thing is downright annoying.

I'd have to say the Ilwrath ships are my least favorite. As a pilot,
they are slow, have a short-ranged weapon and are a rather
large target. Also the cloaking shield seems to be near-useless
against the computer (unless the computer relies on homing
weapons).
As an foe, the cloaking shield makes it a rather annoying opponet.
It's a ship that would normally die quickly against darn near anything
else, but the cloaking device can help it live long past its normal life span.

I would have to agree with ol' Zeepy-Eeepies.
The Ilwrath Avengers are a pain to fight, because I have to pay 100% concentration to hit them while they are cloaked.

In fact, I disliked the Ilwrath enough to have my screen name making fun of their god Kazon.

Umgah Drone. It's 2 slow and it's weapon range 2 small. Flying backwards sucks. It's impossible 2 do any damage against hunam player with it.

Mycon.

They will always try to run away and it is a pain in the ass to chase them while they regenerate. It is even more pain in the ass to chase them after they do a gravity whip because they fly faster.

At least, after they nerfed it for SC2. In SC1 it was a bit more dangerous.

The Druuge Mauler is pretty boring to play against. The computer is always too good with sniper weapons in games.

I agree that Ilwrath are sort of poopy to pilot againts the computer too.

Try an Ilwrath against the Druuge, he'll probably hit you perfectly while you snail around cloaked.

The Jugger and Terminator shields are sort of annoying, and so is the skiff. (I think the defence lasers on the earthling cruiser are fun to use though, against the Chenjesu, Mycon and other cruisers, it's not a 100% defence)

Utwig Jugger. Annoying to fly, annoying to fight.

It seems the shofixi nuke goes through the shields of the jugger and terminator though...

the illwrath. the game cheats by having the comp know where it is at all times. a hunam player can find it within reason but the comp knows to an inch.

Actually, the AI lowers its accuracy a bit when the enemy is cloaked. However, this 'off-ness' is by a distance, rather than an angle. So, at long range, it's comparatively accurate, while at short range it's comparatively pathetic.

The Androsynth Guardian.  I want to meet the Androsynth guy that designed that one.  For a main weapon, we don't need any guns.  We're going to launch waves of deadly bubbles that don't go anywhere.  They just dance around for a few seconds until they disappear.  We have the technology to turn ships into screaming comets which we can use to ram our enemies with deadly force, but for a main weapon, we'll use a bubble maker.

awwwww.....the guardian is IMO the most fun ship.

My least favorite has got to be...

Hmm. I don't think I have one. They all have their uses. I might have least favorite ship-pair battles though.

No complaints about the AI have any bearing for me, because I really consider Super Melee to be the main mode. Don't get me wrong, the 1P story mode is one of the best I've seen. I mean, in which other game can you actually alter the course of history with your decisions?

Title: Re: Least favorite ship?
Post by: Death 999 on May 09, 2005, 08:51:13 pm
Many games let you alter the course of history. Have you only played the original Escape Velocity lately?

Title: Re: Least favorite ship?
Post by: Deus Siddis on May 10, 2005, 02:28:23 am
You are thinking of the later two escape velocities.

In the original, you could not alter anything, except by doing the alien mission, which would mean that their deadly fighters would appear here and there from then on.

Title: Re: Least favorite ship?
Post by: Death 999 on May 10, 2005, 09:09:27 pm
I was asking him if he only played EV 1 precisely because you can never change anything in that game; this would explain why he thought the ability to affect history was something unique to UQM.

Title: Re: Least favorite ship?
Post by: Deus Siddis on May 10, 2005, 10:09:44 pm
I think the first Escape Velocity was still the best of the series. The later ones just didn't have that "clean" feel.

Title: Re: Least favorite ship?
Post by: Death 999 on May 10, 2005, 10:33:35 pm
Lack of shot relativity killed the game. SC makes up for it with wraparound and the planet.

Title: Re: Least favorite ship?
Post by: Deus Siddis on May 10, 2005, 11:24:26 pm
Starflight and Starcontrol beat the ass off of the Escape Velocities. I only meant EV was better than its sequels.

Title: Re: Least favorite ship?
Post by: Krrtzz on May 20, 2005, 12:31:39 am
I think mine is possibly the Pkunk. The reincarnate is just wrong. When it reincarnates it's basically another 20pt ship as far as I'm concerned. Then another. And another. Its worth that much because of the reincarnate, but when the reincarnate is as powerful as it is I think the Pkunk is undervalued at 20. 30 is more accurate IMHO.

Oh, and since one of my SC affinities (as well as Chenjesu) is the Yehat, that helps me hate Pkunk even more! ;)

Title: Re: Least favorite ship?
Post by: Death 999 on May 23, 2005, 02:12:59 am
The Pkunk is, aside from the ressurrection, a 10 point ship. The ressurrection gives you an average of 2 of them, so its point value is doubled.

Least favorite ship? Probably the Druuge Mauler. It is a clumsy, too hittable ship, its weapon's annoying (both as a player, in which case it is hard to use, or in the computer's case, in which it is sometimes capable of painful hits), its energy regeneration's pathetic, and its secondary is just a pathetic way to cover for the pathetic energy regeneration rate.

The Druuge should pay ME a hundred slaves so I'll vacate a position at my fleet and use it for a Mauler.

Title: Re: Least favorite ship?
Post by: Captain_Smith on June 26, 2005, 05:50:28 am
That's relative.  I definitely believe the Pkunk code needs a "resurrection limit".  Occasionally the thing hits the lottery and turns into a terminator ship.  I recall at least three times that my half my fleet was cut down in melee by a Pkunk that just WOULD....NOT....DIE!  For the last time it happened I lost count at a dozen resurrections and it went on some more before it finally stayed dead.

I hate the Spathi Eluder/Discriminator. It's so painful to fly that big target with backwards BUTT missiles... and ugly sounds and weapon graphics... and horribly unnerving against a Probe.

Title: Re: Least favorite ship?

Least favorite .. let's see...

Kohr-Ah Marauder. A real douche to fight, since only some few selected ships are good enough to destroy it without getting their own arses kicked badly. But when I'm in control, it becomes a mockery of a ship.

Umgah Drone ... a computer controlled opponent is ridiculously good with it. Not a single human player could make it a weapon of any sort.

Supox Blade .. it's boring. It has a pea gun. That's it.

Post by: Holocat on January 30, 2007, 12:00:52 am
Hm.  I'd say that this roughly equals the ships I can't fly worth a damn, that said...

0.  Broodhome.  Never could use this ship right;  Always ended up in a bad situation with an enemey that just won't get close enough to my sights to shoot at, shard or otherwise.

1.  Druuge.  I hate the people, I hate the ship, I usually smile when I see them die, even when i'm burning with them.  I really don't like them, ok?

2.  Ilwrath vs. Ilwrath fights PvP are really damn funny, (like the Pkunk vs. Pkunk or Chmmr duels we had) but in general use this ship is just wierd.  I find it even less entertaining to fly than the umgah, but I kinda like them, so... ;3

3.  Utwig.  I hate using the shield.  Not because it's cheesy, it's because i'm horrible at it.

4.  Mycon.  Appears to work just like a cruiser.  Why the heck can't I fly this thing?  Granted, most anyone with most ships vs. a Mycon can at least stalemate (plasma isn't THAT hard to defeat), but the earthlings, with much worse a weapon seem to be so much more effective in my paws.  Odd, and frustrating.

5.  Zoq-Fot-Pik.  I can't tounge someone worth a dime, but I knew this guy that was absolutely murderous with this ship.  Turned Leyland Tounge-lashing to a fine art, and annoyed the hell out of me, when I wasn't awed by the fact this measly point-nothing ship is ripping apart my fleet.

6.  Suppox Blade.  Powerful ship.  Every time I experiment with this ship I realize it's really, really powerful.  Totally awesome power potential, kinda like dancing with the Sofixiti's gun, but way better range and a secondary system that's very powerful if used right.  'Cept I couldn't use it right to save my life.  I'd say my friends have gotten more perfects off me when I was in this boat than any other ship.

Most annoying: Arilou Skiff Warping
Ugliest : Umgah
Weakest: ?  The Umgah drone is pretty weak...

Verdict: Worst = Umgah Drone

mmm i like all the ships really.

I prefer to fly an umgah drone than a kohr-ah marauder ! Much more fun. I actually get some success with it.

Hey, that's intresting. How is it different from SC1? Are other ships different between SC1 and Supermelee? I searched the Wiki but couldn't find the answer.

The cone was wider, I believe.

There are a couple of other differences.

The Androsynth in Blazer mode turned much more awkwardly than it does in SC2. It seemed to turn at 30 degree angles, making it much more difficult to ram opponents.

Also, Ur-Quan fighters die instantaneously when colliding with the planet. Ships like the Arilou can just sit behind the planet and watch the fun.

Anyhoo, back on topic: my least favorite is the Supox.

I have to say I hate the Supox too ship… It just sucks.

I love the Androsynth ship… My brother forced me to use it all the time when I was a kid… and in the end I got to be really good with them.

Did SC2 have the Androsynth in super melee? I know UQM does and just thought this was an addition by the UQM team.
