Some ingame events allow you to be responsible for the extinction of some species, should you choose to. However, you cannot wipe out an entire race by killing off their ships. Each homeworld has an ifinite amount of ships anyway, so it's not even technically possible. Since you can't beat a homeworld defense fleet, you actually *do* have to take the way around it (if you're thinking of what I'm thinking of) -- it's misleading to say you "almost have to" beat the defense fleet, because you *can't*. And by "defeat" I don't mean destroying all enemy's ships in a combat ( maybe some ).
