Title: Best planets for minerals?
Post by: Shadow Bane on May 23, 2005, 06:46:23 am
What are the best planets/systems for Resources?

Generally, the systems orbiting the warmest (and biggest) stars are the richest in resources. They are also the most hazardous to mine, so be careful and save often.

Delta Tauri is the best system to hit as far as I remember.

For starters you could check out Pluto, Jupiter's moons and Mercury.
The Centauri constellation is good for 1st mining trip.

Good call with Delta Tauri.

For more accurate information on this subject, you could always check out this map. :)

This (http://uqm.chumbucket.org/) is an excellent resource for planning mining trips. It can find shortest fuel distance to a point and back (taking Quasispace into account if you wish) as well as having a listing of mineral resources throughout the quadrant.

That is, if you have the right plugin.  :P

Ilwrath space is a great place to get resources early on, even if it's a little hazardous. It's close to home, many of the systems are close together, and you can smash Ilwrath ships for extra resources. Just be sure to max out your thrusters before going there.

Delta Tauri is da BOMB for mineral mining.

Like I say, though, it'd be very hard to go wrong checking out systems with white stars.  Check enough of them and you'll have more RU than you know what to do with.  ;D

Stay away from Centauri though unless you're planning on losing a lot of landers and men (unless of course you have some mods from the Melnorme for your landers).

You can do it if you're very skittish. Throw away fuel like it was nothing, and you won't lose many crew, let alone landers. Remember, you don't take damage while landing or taking off. The exotics will more than make up for the expense.

Aah, the wonders of the Druuge Exploit.. :)

I just started a new game (my second ever) and did the following:

(slight spoilers)

Mined sol, got engines.

Trip 1: Went to Alpha Centauri, mined the saphire/exotic worlds there. Back to earth.

Trip 2: To Wolf for bio (up-left of Sol) then straight to Delta Tauri. Then straight up, quite a bit, to get the UrQ pod and rainbow world, then I hit a nearby giant star to get Melnorme tech. Then back to Arilou space, mined a bit until the portal showed up. Went in and got the portal spawner. Back to earth.

Trip 3: Bought lots of hi-eff. fuel tanks. Warped up to Supox space, visited the 4 rainbow worlds at the arrow tip. Got the Caster. Called Melnorme and bought all tech. Warped down to Druuge, did the fuel trick. Back to earth.

Trip 4: Went to Alpha Centauri to see Melnorme, filled up with fuel (again). Back to Sol.

This gave me 'enough' RU and all the upgrades pretty fast. Date is Sept 55. Now I can concentrate on the quests (I hope it isn't too late to start with those now).

The point why I told Centauri systems are good for mining at the beginning, is that they're fairly close and if you leave the worst weathered planets alone, you get plenty of radioactives etc. without losing any landers or too many crew. Just pop in Alpha C to see the Melnorme, no mining there...

To late? Not at all.

I believe the record for the game is october of 55. If you have a maxed out ship, you can probably finish in less than six months. The game won't end (if you just sit in space and don't do the Utwig quest) till 59.

You're fine.  You have until 2159 or 2160 to figure out the quests and complete them.

And this proves a point I keep saying in here to those who want the RU cheats - if that bothers you so much then you haven't mastered the game.

And the time record is October 05, 2155 if I recall correctly.  That was with knowing where all the stuff is, so if you're still trying to master the game you're doing pretty well if you feel set on RU by Sept 2155.

I guess the best way to get RU is to shoot ships at a homeworld, as that takes no time at all. I didn't feel like doing that since it takes  a lot of real time, as opposed to the fuel trick that just take game time.

Any tips there for good 'ship mining' prey though? Most ships are really weak against the Thraddash it seems. They just head straight into the flames. Thraddash is pretty far away however.

Of course the Dreadnoughts are perfect prey once you have got a maxed out \/indy, but then you don't need the money.

I don't know though, you don't really need that much money during the game it seems. There's just a few battles that are tricky, like the annoying Druuge.

No, homeworlds don't work, because you can never win the battle (since ships are infinite) -- you eventually have to flee, and you don't get RU for fleeing.

I like VUX space as a place to get RU; as a bonus you can go through the whole failed-apology conversation tree while you're doing it. Since Intruders don't seem to have the ability to warp in at close range a la SC1, they fall pretty quickly to Cruisers. You can leave the Probes activated too, since Cruisers or a moderately upgraded Vindicator are okay at taking those out.

If you're not that interested in roleplaying the game realistically, you can take advantage of the fact that Dreadnoughts and, to a lesser degree, Marauders are ridiculously weak against Eluders. Hanging out in Crateris blowing away whole Ur-Quan fleets with Fwiffo is a lot of fun.

You're still learning melee it seems, too.  Perhaps the easiest thing that will work with Druuge are Earth Cruisers.

Zeta Vulpeculae in the Orz region of space is a place worth visiting. You'll discover several auric and treasure worlds, which will give you approximately 1000 units of 'precious' minerals. Haven't visited the Tauri system yet, but this system I mentioned is quite sweet  :)
