Tricorders from Star Trek.
They're so small you can hold them in your hand, and you can do EVERYTHING with them.
And I mean everything.

Seriously.  How freaking awesome would it be to have a summary of everything in the galaxy in the palm of your hand.  Just to leaf through that...

As long as Earth's entry is more than "Harmless", and "Mostly Harmless" doesn't count.  ;D

The Stapler.  I read a short story once which described a world where the stapler hadn't been invented, and paper-clips and binders were what were used instead.  Sci-Fi writers in that world had a device that would automatically paper-clip sheets together in a way that would prevent the paper-clips from falling off.   Then, a scientist from yet another world where dimensional traveling devices were common traded this world staplers for something they didn't have (I think it was Bic lighters; the dimensional travelers still used matches).

Michael Knights watch. It can open handcuffs you know...

I rather liked the gravity enchancing gadget they used on early B5. Sure, the uses were limited, but it's such a brilliant idea. After all, it makse the phrase "I'll squish you!" work quite well.

Bomb #20 from Dark Star.   :P  Proving that you can have too much of a good thing.  Smart bombs, good. Sentient, self-aware bombs... very bad.  Close runner-up would be the Genesis Device, I think.

A type 2 phaser from star trek!

I especially like the looke of the type 2 from Kirk's time.
It's a gun, it's a froce field deactivator, it stops radiation, it keeps dangerous situations from getting explosive results, it heats rocks, it blows up rocks, it can be used to clean the dirt of a table, it can be used to cook. Man, there are so many different settings on this thing, those cadets at the academy must be following lessons in Phasers and how to use them for years before graduating. It can do the same thing as a gun and a big bag filled with all kinds of tools.
No wonder that all those away teams ever carry is a tricorder, a communicator and a phaser. They simply don't need any more. (Though wearing some decent armour would be ahndy, especially in any colour but red).
My second gadget would be a tricorder.

There was a story by Niven, set in known space, which involved a Tnuctip espionage device. That was pretty cool. It also had an extra juicy final mode.

Asteroid engines from K240 is always a hit... get it? A hit! Hahaha HIT LOL Hit! ahahah.. ahahah *helium voice* Hiiiit! *more helium* eeeiiiiiii...

Eherm..

The missiles were quite useless against the harder species, but asteroid engines always did the trick. Gotta love ramming an entire asteroid into your foe.

More of an installation/building than gadget though. I don't think I have a favourite gadget. Maybe a 'wisp' of some sort, ie a helper robot that hovers at your shoulders and do stuff. NASA is building one for use in space now.
