Title: Favorite SciFi Music
Post by: Deus Siddis on May 27, 2005, 05:14:17 am
It can be a theme or something just used in a scene someplace, but it can't be a piece of classical music that predated the movie itself.

I'm going with the theme in Blade Runner.

P.S. Does anybody know what that piece was in the beginning of Aliens, when the shuttle is drifting through space?

The classic Star Wars trilogy, especially The Empire Strikes back.  Without question.

The Precursor remixes, obviously.

The Truth and Reconciliation Suite on the Halo soundtrack.  The one they play in the main menu of the game with the drums, violins, and some creepy choir thing.

The DS9 theme

The theme for ST 2 and ST 3 (I think it was the same one)

Various of the precursors remixes, and the Orz theme (which I have not yet heard the precursors remix yet...)

Theme music from Earth: the Final Conflict

I'm surprised that no one mentioned it in other threads...

I'll definitely agree that the original music fits into the game better than the remixes, for the most part. But for just listening, I would have to say some are better.

The Mycon is nifty in both incarnations; the remix is very different, with apparently a different aim.  Similarly for hyperspace.

A friend of mine just said that the soundtrack to the Rocketeer is amazing. Not having seen the movie in like 15 years, I can't recall.

I love the theme song to Frontier: Elite 2. Also, the theme song for The Journeyman Project series.

As to movies- maybe 2001: A Space Oddyssey? Although that's all classical music. The orchestral soundtrack to The Matrix was rather good.

My favorite film score of all time is undoubtedly the one from Koyaanisqatsi. Doesn't really count here though, it's not a sci fi film.

"The Mycon is nifty in both incarnations;"

Agreed. One thing I really liked about the original one, was that bizzare cultish feel it had. Perfect for the Mycon.

"Also, the theme song for The Journeyman Project series."

Hehe, I have a copy of that on my hardrive. I thought I was crazy, but I guess I'm not alone. The game itself was kind of slow if I recall, the music was the main good part. They used some vangelis style sounds on a few of the themes.

I actually liked the whole journeyman project series. They were just fun. Also, time travel isn't really done a whole lot in the adventure genre (as far as I've seen), so I found the series a refreshing change of pace.

I only played the first one. What were the others like? I never got them because exploring castles in a space suit seemed too far apart from the more futuristic original.

The second (Buried in Time) one was actually very good. It was certainly the hardest. You visit many interesting locations throughout history, such as the mayan temples at Chichen Itza, Lenardo da Vinci's workshop (which includes 3D models of what some of his inventions may have looked like), a derelict space station, and yes, a castle. Instead of saving earth's chances at joining the symbiotry like in the first game, you're out to save your own arse, as you were convicted of some crime or other (changing history I think).

It was a highly enjoyable game.

As to Legacies of Time, that game was pure fun. No devious puzzles like the second, but a few head-scratchers. Also, no way to die, so the gameplay is more relaxing (if less suspenseful). With the chameleon jumpsuit, you can interact with all the folks from the past, posing as any character you've encountered from that time period. It really adds a whole new dimension to the game, imho. Also, the locations you visit are semi-mythical; atlantis, el dorado, shangri-la.

If you liked the first one, I would certainly suggest you check out the other two.

For movie music, my favorite bit has *GOT* to be from Star Trek II, the segment that went with the battle in the Mutara Nebula.

Game music though, gotta think a bit.  Think it's a toss-up between Star Control II battle music and the music used in Warcraft.

An excellent pick, from the best movie of that series. Damn! I wonder if a mod could be created to put that into super melee!!! That would be funny.

An ogg would work just as well, I think.

Amen brotha.  I love that soundtrack almost as much as the original Star Wars soundtrack.  Very good stuff.

Title: Mechwarrior 2?

Hey, who here has played Mechwarrior 2? Does anyone remember it's music? (If you don't remember it, you're probably not human.)

I've played the game (great game) but I don't remember the music... I guess that voids my human status.

If you still have the disc, play the music on your comp or a cd player and reclaim your humanity. Maybe I'm just crazy, but I think you'll find it's worth digging up.

Clubbed to Death by Rob Dougal. That does count because it was first used in Matrix, right?

The Blade Runner theme was also good, and the theme for Crest/Banner of the Stars.

The Firefly theme.

Journeyman Project? I have pretty much all the games for that series (including Pegasus Prime and DVD version of JMP3). Can I extract music from those?

"Journeyman Project? I have pretty much all the games for that series (including Pegasus Prime and DVD version of JMP3). Can I extract music from those?"

You don't actually have to (at least with the first JP game). The CD plays off a home theatre or boom box just as a normal music CD does. Since they're already in the correct format, they can be extracted easily if you have roxio cd creator or the like.

Just browse around the CD's, presto never bothered with encrypting or wadding up their game content.
