Title: Text Speed
Post by: Zombra on June 05, 2005, 02:23:06 am
I am annoyed by the little scrolling cursor underneath the communication window.  I would like it to stop.  I just want to be able to press a key when I am done reading the current text, as I was able to do in the original game by slowing chat speed to minimum.

Is there any feature like this in UQM?

Thanks in advance
Z

add this command to the command line in your shortcut:

--scroll pc

it should look like this:

"D:\The Ur-Quan Masters\uqm.exe" --scroll pc

be sure to keep spaces between commands if your using more than one.

Hmmm, thanks.  Actually I did put that in and it doesn't seem to do anything. :'(

Here's exactly what my shortcut target looks like:

"C:\Games\SC2 - The Ur-Quan Masters\uqm.exe" -f --scroll pc

Appreciated. :)

I played a bit anyway and am getting used to the interface.  It still bugs me, but I can live with it.

hopefully the devs will see this. they might have more to say about it. i know the pc version lets you scroll at your leasure. since the settings from both the pc and 3do can be used, im not understanding why its not possible. again, sorry, ill see if i can dig up something.

I think the default is  --scroll pc, where  --scroll 3do is (by contrast) a smoothly scrolling slider as opposed to the per-page style of the pc.
Although I don't know of a way to disable the scroll bar completely, PC-style text review can be invoked by pressing the spacebar.

There is no such feature. What did you have in mind for the speech with your idea?

My ideal is to be able to read each page of text at my own pace, and press a key to go on to the next.  That's all.

I don't like having to page back if I'm not fast enough to read a particular page for whatever reason, and I don't like paging ahead if I read faster than I'm "supposed" to, because I often hit the key just as the system also pages ahead, thus turning over two pages at once.

It's a minor complaint, but as a huge fan of the original game, I'm disappointed to see the interface take a step backwards in this cool new version.  In the original, "minimum" text speed was infinite.  You could go out to lunch, take a trip to Monte Carlo, get married and have a few kids, and come back to your keyboard to find that it was still on the same page of text until you told it to page forward.  The new way gets on my nerves.

Thanks for asking; I appreciate it.

I am specifically asking about the spoken voices. Or don't you use the speech pack?

It's hard to take the best of both worlds sometimes. The 3DO version didn't have subtitles, and so the --scroll=3do made sense. The --scroll=pc (the default) scrolls one page at a time, which most people seem to prefer when subtitles are present.
If you would want to pause after each sentence, the speech playing would have to be paused. And that's not really an ideal situation either.

The 3DO had speech. You had (and still have) the option to install it when you ran the installer.
