Title: A Newbie Question. Fuel?! Post by: Shadow on August 14, 2005, 07:10:55 pm Ok, I started to play this game ,and I reallly like like. However, right now I am at alpha wolf, have 2 fuel and 15 crew. I think I shouldnt have gone out of sol, right ? ShouldI just restart? Where is the star base ?

Post by: Captain_Smith on August 14, 2005, 07:47:13 pm You can go out into space until your ship goes dead and is either destroyed or some good samaritan race (which could hardly be called that) comes along to help you. Better to restart and poke around Sol some more before you take trips outside of Sol.

What about starase? b : Title: Re: A Newbie Question. Fuel?! Post by: Culture20 on August 15, 2005, 01:34:48 am If he's never found the starbase, then he's going to get hit by at least a few probes before a "good samaritan" happens along.
As for where the starbase is: Spoiler: Explore Sol before leaving. Remember the beginning sequence? You're returning to Earth from Unservalt; so, why not pay earth a visit? Title: Re: A Newbie Question. Fuel?! Post by: Death 999 on August 15, 2005, 01:43:15 am You get fuel in the 'outfit starship' part of the starbase.

Which is why I brought the "destroyed" option up. Besides, it would be best if he reloaded anyway if he's far away from home with 2 units fuel and has never visited the starbase. Title: Re: A Newbie Question. Fuel?! Post by: ShadowPhoenix on August 15, 2005, 03:38:31 am ok.... I visited earth.
So...should I look on the moon? Title: Re: A Newbie Question. Fuel?! Post by: Captain_Smith on August 15, 2005, 05:08:19 am ok.... I visited earth. So...should I look on the moon? The starbase is the other thing orbiting earth. ::) Title: Re: A Newbie Question. Fuel?! Post by: Megagun on August 15, 2005, 11:31:13 am Just visit the starbase, and do what the Starbase Captain (Hayes) tells you to do... From there on, just follow what he advises you to do and you'll be allright.. :)

That's Commander Hayes. :)Title: Re: A Newbie Question. Fuel?! Post by: shadowphoenix on August 16, 2005, 05:55:25 am w00t thanks guys!
btw why cant I land on big planets like saturN? Title: Re: A Newbie Question. Fuel?! Post by: Cronos - Unlogged on August 16, 2005, 06:50:15 am The reason is twofold.
Gas giants dont have "Surfaces" in the technical sense. They have solid cores, yes, but no true "Surface" to speak of. If you consider the point at which the "Surface" begins to be any kind of solid mass, the air pressure from the gas giant would crush the lander before it got anywhere near it. Hence the reasons you cant land on Gas Giants :) Title: Re: A Newbie Question. Fuel?! Post by: sss on August 17, 2005, 02:29:56 am :O Thanks all!
Now I got 50 people , all turning thingys and 2 landers and 25 fuel Title: Re: A Newbie Question. Fuel?! Post by: michael on August 19, 2005, 08:48:55 am you don't need more than one lander. I don't lose them much anymore but if you seem to just save before a landing(don't land on hard to mine planets)
Title: Re: A Newbie Question. Fuel?! Post by: Novus on August 19, 2005, 10:04:00 am A spare lander is a good investment if you do a lot of mining far away from Sol and dislike saving all the time and reloading every time you make a mistake; after all, the cost of a lander is equivalent to 25 fuel, which is usually less than the fuel you need to get back to Sol, get a new lander and get back to where you were.
You can only use one lander at a time, so spare landers are unnecessary if you, when you lose a lander, always go back to a save from before landing, just like Michael said. UQM lets you decide how often you save and load, which allows you to control how difficult the game is. You can get away with a lot less equipment and mining much more hazardous planets if you keep reloading until you get what you want instead of accepting that you lost a ship or lander or something. Personally, I like the challenge of completing the game without "undoing" my mistakes. I also avoid using notes from previous times I've played the game. There's nothing quite like accidentally bumbling into a hostile homeworld with 0 crew on your flagship and no saved game (I actually survived that one; it's all about activating the emergency escape warp at the right time). Title: Re: A Newbie Question. Fuel?! Post by: Captain_Smith on August 19, 2005, 07:03:28 pm Yeah, that's something I never get with the "I'm going to save every time there's a problem and reload until I get what I want" crowd. It takes the difficulty out of the game because it removes the consequences of your actions out of the game.
Title: Re: A Newbie Question. Fuel?! Post by: meep-eep on August 19, 2005, 11:03:26 pm Well, if you're already constantly loading the game to see the responses to all possible dialog options...
