Title: Does talking to Melnorme "trigger" events

I started a new game and bypassed some of the "hints" given by the Melnorme.   I gave the maidens to the shofixti he disappeared and never returned, when I go talk to the Utwig they wont give me the ultron.  The syreen brush me off also.  Im wondering if some things cant be done until the hints are actually given out?

It isn't the player that should know what to do, it's the character that you're playing that needs to know. I think that everything important that you can learn from the melnorme you can learn in another way too, but I'm not 100% sure.
If you "give" the Shofixti maidens to the Shofixti male, after a little while you can recruit Shofixti at the Starbase.
The captain needs to know what happened to the Syreen, and then you need to offer proof to them. The captain can learn this info from the Arilou, the Mycon, or the Druuge. The proof is the egg shell.
You get the Ultron from the Supox.

Exactly how long does it take for the Shofixti to return after you deliver the maidens to Tanaka?

I think that if you get into a fight with the Melnorme on your first date, then they'll hate you forever.
So I don't they're required to finish the game.

You can make up with them again.
At least, the text-files propose so, since there is text like "we take this and that as payment for your crimes. And it is not a good idea making friends by opening the fire on them".

Start a new game, go straight to Alpha Centaurii and meet with the Melnorme, if a Probe doesn't get you.

Ask if he has any information which might be useful to you. Express your outrage that he is going to charge for this information. Ask he won't just give you this information. Say that you are going to TAKE what you want. His bridge will turn blue, and you can now either talk with him some more, back out, or get blown to smithereens.

And if you take him on, his disruption device means that without homing weapons (and probably even with them), you get pwned.
