Title: DOS Starcontrol 2 save games
Post by: alatari on October 17, 2005, 12:58:40 pm
So I look around on my games machine hard drive and lo and behold there is Starcontrol 2 and it's save games from 1993.  So I rename #49 and place it in the UQM saves folder and ... nope.  Dr. Watson time.

Set the compatability mode for Starcon2.com to the oldest settings and got as far as the load game screen then it crashes.

Why do I do these things to myself?   Masochist I suppose?

I just do not remember the ending being the way it's turning out and wanted to compare the old game.

Why do I still have the save games?   Well it's a great game isn't it?  And I took pride in the fact I had upgraded a machine from DOS 2.1 to XP SP2 over my years as a technician.........

UQM doesn't read PC SC2 save games, so don't bother trying to get that to work. There are subtle differences between PC SC2 and UQM that make it difficult to support SC2 saves (mostly related to minor gameplay differences such as lander capacity, random planet and mineral generation and such).

If you really want to run SC2 under XP, try DOSBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/). It works very well if you have enough CPU power.

Thanks, I'll give DOSBox a try.

Got D-Fend v2 and DOSBox 0.63.

But no matter what setting I try the colors eventually screw up.  Any hints?

Pink space is just way wrong...

opengl, double buff, 12000 cycles, normal core, vga, 640x480

Tried various combos of frame skipping, cycles and rendering also messed with Full screen mode, various process priorities and even turned off Gravis.

Did load an old game tho and found out that I didn't want to destroy the Chmrrr evolution so I didn't and well you know...  No wonder I wanted to play this game.  I hate not finishing something...

Novus: planet and mineral generation should be exactly the same on the PC version and the 3DO. The only difference is the placement of the minerals (the actual minerals are the same), but that doesn't affect the saved games. Lander capacity is also not a problem, as you can't save the game while on a planet.
I don't recall what the exact problems were, but the conclusion remains the same: PC and 3DO saved games are incompatible.
