Post by: Vela on November 17, 2005, 06:08:43 pm
This thread's intended to be a list of games of all genres related with space.

Please add here the name of any game you know, including a short remark.

Thank you!

I start the list.

Star Control 2 No point in writing anything about this game.

Star Control: Timewarp (http://timewarp.sourceforge.net) This is a project inspired in SC2. At the moment, only the melee mode is working, and it often crashes. However, the graphics and gameplay are nice, and it has online play.

Aftermath  (http://www-personal.umich.edu/~rkingsle/) Another sequel to SC2. I couldn't play it because it ran too slow on my computer >:(. However, it seems to be a good game.

Subspace Continuum (http://beginners.subspace.net) An action MMORPG. The gameplay is pretty simple, but addicting.

Unification Wars and Galactic Conquest (www.gamestotal.com) Two strategy MMORPGs. If you like the genre, you will probably enjoy them.

Epiar www.epiar.net (http://www.epiar.net)  - Open Source Space Adventure/Arcade Game

Final Frontier Trader  http://fftrader.sourceforge.net/ -  is a 2D single player space strategy, combat, and trading game. You pilot a starship which is upgradable. You can buy, sell, or trade parts and even new starships. You can even join a fleet for experience in missions and combat.

Flatspace http://www.lostinflatspace.com/ -  is a 3D space trading and flight simulation. The ultimate objective in the game is to locate and assemble parts of a galactic hyperdrive. You can decide what you want to do and how you want to play. To make a profit, you could opt to trade cargo between eerie space stations, or become a space pirate and steal cargo.

How loosely are you defining "space" games?

Digging in my memory, I come up with the following games:

Personal computer games:

Starflight 1 & 2: These two games were acknowledged to be spiritual forebears of Star Control II.  Featured somewhat similar trade/mine/converse mechanics as SC2/UQM, though in a much more primitive fashion.

Wing Commander series:  3-D first-person space combat simulation games with an unusually gripping storyline.

X-Wing vs. Tie-Fighter:  A hugely successful Star Wars-themed space combat similator.

Space War: One of the earliest (if not THE earliest) space combat simulator for the PC platform.

Star Wars - Rogue Squadron series: Excellent set of space combat simulators, again set in the Star Wars universe.

Master of Orion series:  Turn-based strategy game, a la Civilization, but with a space-based twist.

StarCraft - widely regarded as one of the best real time strategy games ever made, this title from Blizzard Entertainment features 2 alien races in addition to space-faring humans.

Leather Goddesses of Phobos:  Had to mention this here for humor value.  One of the earliest text adventure games, and (I believe) the first with an erotic spin, featuring buxom invaders from Phobos.

Homeworld 1 & 2:  3-D space real time strategy games with reasonably good storylines.

Freelancer:  Space trading/combat simulation game.  Good art, and *almost* good game design.

Earth and Beyond:  Ho-hum MMORPG featuring various trading factions in space.

---

Arcade games (almost too many to count):

Xenophobe - Spoofy twist on an Aliens-style action game featuring space marines trying to survive an onslaught of disgusting aliens infesting a space station.

Gradius 1-4 - Sidescrolling space-themed shoot-em ups that really defined the genre.  (Honorable mention goes here to the very similar yet superior game Life Force, which had a nanotechnology theme in the arcade, but somehow picked up a space-based storyline when it went to consoles).

R-Type I & II:  Hands down the best side-scrolling arcade space games ever.  Great artwork, great music, fantastic game design.  So good that you'd never know they were made in the 80's even if you saw them today.

Space Invaders: Well duh. :P

Galaga(many versions)/Galaxian: Archetypical bottom-to-top shooter descendants of Space Invaders.

Asteroids / Asteroids Deluxe: Classic rock-blasting action set in space.

Sinistar: 360 degree sidescrolling shooter featuring the extremely noisy and imposing boss enemy, Sinistar (one of the first video games to use voice simulation as a gimmick).

Time Pilot '84:  Similar to Sinistar, mentioned above, another 360-degree sidescroller with a space-based theme.

Assault: Unusual tank game putting you at the helm of a futuristic tank on a cratered moon surface with missions to destroy various enemy installations.

Moon Patrol:  Classic side-scrolling vehicle game with UFOs

Tempest:  Bizarre 3-D "well-shooter" nominally set in outer space.

Gyruss:  Spirital descendent of Tempest and Galaga, featured a spaceship flying and shooting down swarms of enemies all the way through the Solar System.

Defender / Defender Deluxe : Bi-directional side-scrolling shoot-em ups, with special features like Hyperspace and Smart Bombs.

I'm sure there are many, many games that I've missed/forgotten/never heard of as well.

Well, I mean games of all genres (action, strategy, RPG...) that are set in space. As there are too many games that could be placed here, I'll limit the thread to freeware/open source games.
