It's a tough call for me.  I love the Yehat (SCOTS RULE!), the Pkunk, and the Fot Quot Pik (FRUNGY!) about equally.

This thread is racist.



Anyway. The Thraddash have the coolest theme music, so I pick them.

Well, it's kind of hard to top the charm of one race that has a member who raves on about mansions surrounded by trees that carry baskets of stones of just the right shape, size, and color to throw at monsters...Those Frungy nuts sure do come in close, though.

I also wonder if anyone who suggests a certain blue-skinned race dressed in skimpy outfits complete with knives will be immediately labeled rabid sex whores...

Has to be the Spathi. Between Fwiffo, the Safe Ones, and the rest of the spacefaring members of the species, they have more priceless dialogue per capita than any other sentient in this quadrant. ;)

I love the Yehat ships (and I always thought of
them as French) but for a race? Ur-Quan!

Kohr-Ah.  Because they have some great lines:

"You have attacked us before, and we survived! You cannot defeat us. Submit!"
We did. You did. Yes we can. No.

"Is there anything we can do to make you stop the killing?"
If you eliminate all non-Ur-Quan sentient races, including yourselves
then we will stop.
We have made this offer before. No one accepts.

Their ships are pretty good too.

Even though I can't stand piloting the Eluder, it just doesn't get much better than Fwiffo and the rest of those crazy Spathi.

I love playing as the Zot Fot though, and their humor comes in as a close second...so maybe...

The Yehat are my favorite.  They have cool ships, and their theme music (the PC .mod -- not sure about the 3DO version) invokes a lot of feeling.  I always get goose-bumps when I listen to it.  :)

Something about the Yehat just makes them seem very powerful... almost as if they're modelled after a real alien race, not just a game character.  Hard to describe, I guess...

Ooh, tough call. I like all of them, but if I had to pick a favourite it would probably either be the Arilou La'leelay or the Melnorme. I'm also very fond of the Yehat and the Mycon -- and few alien villain races in any similar science fiction universe are so understandable and fleshed-out as the two races of the Ur-Quan species.

I like the Arilou because they raise many questions -- including quite a lot they don't answer. I can't help but think about why they're so interested in humans (I'm not so fond of the SC3 explanation -- mostly because I'm not so fond of SC3 at all -- and besides, Ford and Reiche weren't involved in it, so I've decided it "didn't take place" ;-) ). Even though they're enigmatic, endlessly wise, ancient and possess unimaginably advanced technology, they aren't above playing tricks on other species. In this aspect, they remind me of Gandalf from Tolkien's universe (incidentally, my favourite character there): An unimaginably powerful, ancient wizard with godlike knowledge, who nevertheless likes playing tricks on hobbits and hanging out on hills blowing smoke-rings.

The Melnorme's literally knowledge-based economy fascinates me, as does the strange focus their species seems to have on colours. They all have colour names, they use a colour-changing weapon, and of course the 12 million credit question. But there's also their past. Reiche has confirmed that they're indeed the (descendants of?) the Mael-Num, an old Sentient Milieu race that evaded both the Ur-Quan, and by asking the Words, indirectly started the first Doctrinal War. Was that a planned outcome, or coincidence? How could the Mael-Num, even briefly, calm the vicious invaders, just with words? And what have they been up to all these years? Are they interdimensional, like the Arilou and Orz, since they seem to be able to see Verezy ships that are invisible to humans (even humans in Precursor ships that probably have Precursor sensor equipment)?

The Yehat I like because of their honour culture and because they seem, like another poster mentioned, like a quite believable alien spacefaring species. Even though I'm not sure how bird-like Pkunk can be a genetic offshoot from the pterodactyl-like Yehat. I suppose they might have evolved on the same planet, without necessarily being closely genetically related. But I very much like the story about the Yehat uplifting of the Shofixti -- although the Yehat are warriors and predators, they are also "loving parents".  Although it's fanfic and as such not canon, "Honour" (http://starcontrol.classicgaming.gamespy.com/scwc/fanfic/honour.htm (http://starcontrol.classicgaming.gamespy.com/scwc/fanfic/honour.htm)) gave me a good view of a possible Yehat culture. You can just feel their shame and how they are a torn people over their Queen's ignoble decision, and the demise of their proud, beloved "Children".

As for the Mycon, it is the sheer alien-ness of them that really gets my imagination going. They're an engineered species, yes -- but who made them? For what? Why are they turning habitable worlds into destroyed Hells, if they're a terraforming construction? To what degree do they themselves know that they're an artificial construction? And the whole aspect of being possessed by long-dead fellow Mycon is as creepy as it is interesting.

I have to agree with the one I can't name.

The blue battery guy. ZFP are three species no? ...so I pick one here. I don't care much for the plant or eye.

Syreen of course, I can't help myself.

The Spathi are also a given.


How about the one you like the least (even if you do like them a bit)?

The Druuge... ukk. 'Nice' evil character but the art just makes me uneasy.

Thraddash are not a favourite either, they seem a bit too cliché.

Utwig, too whiny, and that bag over their head reminds me of how bad artists hide the faces they can't draw... plus I dislike purple. They're too far away too, so it can be annoying to make the trip (without hyperspace).

Well im a fan for honorable races. So im split betteen either the shofixty or the spathi. The shofixty for obvious reasons. But the spathi cause thier complete cowards yet they will pick up a gun and die to protect thier race if needed. If ure wonderin what im talkin about look up "The Black Spathi Sqaudron" on google. (yes i know "The Black Spathi Squadron is fan made story but i think its a good enough one to be considered official.")

Lese favorite? I'd have to go with the VUX. No matter

Favorites:

The Syreen- For obvious reasons.

The Yehat- I like their theme music, their accents, and their recount of the end of the war.

The Thraddash-  I like their theme music and their Reeunk Afterburners.

Utwig - My love of their ships overcomes my hate for their voices.

Most Disliked:

Vux - Like they have any business calling anyone ugly

Druuge - Never really liked them, maybe it's their S&M themed ship controls (when you talk to them) or maybe because I find their ships useless.

For least favourite, I'd say either VUX or Syreen.

We don't really get much of an insight into either culture, in my opinion. They're just not very well-developed, compared to some of the other SC races. The exception is the Supox, probably the race we get to know the least, but the premise of the Supox (sapient plants) makes them interesting nonetheless.

The VUX -- all we really get to know about them is that they don't like humans, they consider us ugly (which makes sense, by the way -- if you're a grotesque one-eyed squid monster, odds are you'd probably find other grotesque one-eyed squid monsters attractive, and not bald, bipedal savannah apes). They consider it a perversion to like humans, and they took Rand's Insult as an excuse to declare war on humans, because they're a bunch of bigots. That's about all we get to know about them.

The Syreen -- I liked the "space gypsy" aspect of them in the first game, but that hasn't really influenced them much, I think. It does make Talana's reluctance to join the cause seem sensible: They finally have a home now. I don't agree with the premise that a matriarchal culture would necessarily lead to a peaceful history -- and all we really get to know about them is that they have a matriarchal culture, their early agrarians outcompeted hunters (which, incidentally, is also what happened for humans), their home was destroyed by the Mycon, and their history prior to the war was mostly peaceful.  And, not that it has anything to do with the Syreen themselves, it was sort of disappointing that Hayes doesn't say anything about their return when you get them into the new alliance.

I hate the Druuge, and have been known to wait until the Kohr-Ah killing frenzy begins before finishing the game, so the Kohr-Ah will get to the Druuge first. But the fact that I dislike them so much means they're a success -- a bunch of murderous, greedy slave traders that use people for fuel are not really a race you're supposed to like. The aspect of having an entire society be one gigantic corporation which owns *everything* is as fascinating as it is evil. So the Druuge don't make my "dislike" list.

I think the Druuges' ships are the fun most to use against the Sa-Matra.

all you need to do is fire some shots to get your speed going over those pesky defences, then snipe at the red targets!

I also like the concept of the Druuge a lot. Not in a "I want to join the Crimson Corporation" sort of way, mind you.

Have to say, so I'll just list some races off the top of my head with the pro's:

 Orz - They just freaked me out the first time I played the game, and I've loved them ever since :)

Arilou - because of their connection with possible real-life themes ... very skillfully done.

Utwig - best ship in the game. Period.

Supox and Slylandro - because they're so different than any other race (I happened to like SC3, and that makes these 2 races particularly interesting - for obvious reasons if you've played the game ... The slylandro have already survived one "eternal1" "attack", and the supox probably would too, which is probably why the Orz killed them off)

Ur-Quan Kzer-za - Because they actually believe they're misunderstood

Haha, I must be some kind of freak or something because I adore the VUX. Something about them just hugely amuses me. I always end up pestering them for hours.

I've always loved the Spathi, of course, and the Pkunk are another favorite of mine. The Thraddash too! They're fun to tweak. I also have a soft spot for the Utwig. Something about giving them the repaired Ultron and seeing them so happy makes me feel all fuzzy inside.
I love the Yehat's music and their devotion to the Shofixti. I always feel really moved when they begin the Revolution once they see their children again.

Darn it, I love all the races.

Heh, actually, that was a friend of mine being goofy on AIM. I just loved the mental picture of it so much that I'VE DECIDED TO HANG ON TO IT.

Yehat: I love the sound their guns make. Just makes you yell "BLAM BLAM BLAM" outloud.

Umgah: The funniest race, and I'm a biology major.

and the Spathi because of their dry, self depricating humor.

Zarla: Oh, no wonder I don't remember it.  I just figured it was from SC3 or some-such.  That game did have the oh-so-entertaining "green monster on the vid screen" incident...

Kamikaze Shogun Racoons from space or the Shofixti.

Shofixti have always been cool to me, the kooky space rats ;D.
Also the Yehat - honorable angry scottish birds for the win!
And their sister species, the Pkunk. Their ships, their outlook, their penchant for suddenly realizing absolutely true things out of nowhere... ;D
Aaaand finally the Melnorme, the eternal capitalists. Much more principled than the Druuge.

I think that's it.

The Melnorme. Their only real interest is in the almighty credit, but you couldn't ask for a more honest trader. The stuff they sell you is relatively cheap and works exactly as it's supposed to, and the information they sell you is true and worth having.

I am just starting in the sc2 game, but the ships in the melee game I allways liked more were Vux (for the tactics possibilities) , the Mycon, the MMrn(whatever) as at least in vs cpu mode is the only one I can use to kill easily an Ur-Quan in the top level.  The Chenjesu. About the races, race art, personality...lol, just have not seen enough of the game...But yup, like Spathi's sense of humour.

Either the VUX for their "human"-like personalities (yes, it's sad to admit, but we humans are just as vile as the VUX...I mean, uh, in our mental er...workings) or the Yehat, because, you gotta admit, the Yehat would clobber the Galaxy's ass if they were truly evil :D

Heh. I love how some people write half a page and other simply give a race name. I think I'll go with the latter (almost)

I'd have to say  my favorites are as most people have said, the Yehat.  Ever since I played Super Melee on my friends 386 (we didn't realize there was a whole other game!) they have been my favorite ships to fly.  Actually talking to them in SC2 was amazing and I came to love their culture and history.  The music for them was also awesome.  '

I also really liked/disliked the Orz.  They had a very cool/creepy feel to them, and while I appreicated all the help they gave me (their ships are one of my favorites to fly) I could never quite shake the question 'are we gonna end up like the Androsynth?'  They just had a cool backstory that I always wanted to learn more about.  Any new sequel I hope would definitely include more about them....

My fave races  would probaly be:
Yehat. Just looove their honor and style.
Pkunk. They're just so..... funny. also, they're  well...... can't find the word for it.
Kzer-za. They're misunderstood, and i like their ship.
Humans. Duh.

I'm gonna have to say Chenjesu... sure the ship is slow but with the doggies to sap their energy and distract them a bit I have found them very useful... If you use them a lot then you can get quite good with them... thats only for melee though.. as far as acually having a favorite race story wise..

I could never love the ultwigs.. they are how you say.. the emo space people..
then there are the spathi.. just gotta love fwiffo and they are great at melee, but they are lacking a bit in the area of courage..

 the yehats are great... the bravehearts of the game... they can be pretty cheap in melee too with there sheilds.. though they can only sustain about 1 or 2 hits from any ship... t

he traadash are what I like the call the arnold kinda terminator race.. they are all about fighting.. but  as we all know get owned a bit at everything...

I don't know what the creators were thinking when they made the supox... i think there ship is a flower or something.. i dunno... they aren't very usful for anything though...

you have both the ur quans with their talking frog things they have tough ships, but thats only because of the big crew count.. if not for that then they wouldn't be any better than the other ships...

you have the zot-fots, pkunk, ilwarth who all have close range ships that pretty much are not quite usful.. to me anyways....

the umguh are kinda weird as are the mycons but the mycons ship like the chenjesu is good with its homing projectiles..

out of all theses I'd have to go with the shofixi.. kinda like japanese space culture...

other than that I love the ability to steal crew with the syreen!

I'd have to say that the Ur Quan were always my favourite (Even though I destroyed them). Power to the Urks!

I Like the Androsynth, just wish they were in the game.

Next would be the Yehat.

Eh I know this is an OLD thread but; hell its realavent to me at least. I love to Zoq-Fot-Pik and the Spathi; they're funny as hell.
 

In fact all the races are pretty funny; I don't quite like the Thradesh though for some reason.

For a single race, probably the Orz. A close second, The mycon. best voices, the VUX. something about the odd accent and tone just... fits. For the loudest race, it's gotta be the Yehat screaming about the pkunk or whatever. I had to take my headphones off, but in a good way. For the funniest, the Spathi. For the best music, the Yehat again.

But my very favorite has to be the orz.

Well I'm only beggining to play and the Yehat sound nice with that accent heh :)

Thraddash. Nothing like cigars and afterburners to make my day :-)

I dunno. Probably a toss-up between the Orz, Yehat, and Pkunk.

I'd have to say...

1: Spathi - obvious reasons.

2: Ur-Quan - They are one of the most fleshed-out villain races that I have seen in games so far.  Their ships are good, and they have a good design.

3: Melnorme - best merchants that I have seen yet.

4: Human - Obviously.

Least favorite race:

VUX - who are THEY to call ANYONE ugly?

Most favourite:
Humans - obvious reasons. And Cruiser are pretty good, comparing to their cost
Kzer-Za - nice ships, and good intensions
Chmmr - nice ships, but not much beyond that
Arilou - the whole idea of "extended family" and influence upon Humans
Yehat - honorable
Spathi - best texts

Most hateful:
VUX - bigots, but Intruders are OK
Mycon - i doubt they are even self-aware - mindless planets doomers
Kohr-Ah - unbalanced ships - and genocidal people
Druuge - heinous slave traders

Oh come on, how can you NOT like the Kohr-Ah? I mean, they are genocidal maniacs, but still. Their ships are cool.

I never really like the Chmmr myself, I mean sure their ship is good, but the Chmmr themselves are boring and have that grating robot voice.

And for some reason the VUX remind me of the French. I have no idea why.

The exact same thing went through my head when I met them. My favourite races from SC2 are the Arilou, Melnorme, and Yehat. The rest are good but nothing trumps honour and business men >: D.

My picks:

Spathi - Great Dialog and good ships
Yehat - Good Dialog and good ships
Kohr-Ah - Good dialog, devestating ships.

Well, yes - Kohr-Ah ships ARE cool. But a bit too powerful. And the idea of their Trophy Pits - creepy. But have nice quotes though, like that "You did. We did. We can. No.". Besides their murderous doctrine and maniacal genocide orgy, yes, they are OK.

I too don't like Chmmr race much. But only serious threat to their Avatars are Mauler and Marauders - that why i wrote "nice ships" and nothing beside

VUX - French - thats right. But I too don't have idead why.

Damn, am I the only person who likes the Thraddash?

Come on, all their ridicolous cultures that manage to nuke each other into or out of space, the stone age and everything else?

Also, they make for damn good fun in Super Melee. Nothing like friend everything! (Well, almost. A few ships pose a threat ;-) )

I think the Thraddash are great fun, both to talk with and fight as. But the Spathi beat them in both regards. :P

I like the Thraddash. And I never really thought the VUX were ugly, I thougt they looked pretty cool. personally I think the ugliest are the Druuge.

And I also like the Melnorme. have you ever said you were going to steal from them in an experimental game? they have some interesting dialogue.

Well, Thraddash are funny. How easy to foul them ("We are the Fat Jerks") or how they misunderstood when Captain say them to be peaceful. And other nice quotes like "... until then, get lost!" But their ships are pretty weak.

Er, the Traddash ship is not weak by any means!!!

The afterburner is useful on so many levels...

For example, Chmmr Avatars are easy to fry. Ur-Quan crew members are a joke, as are Orz ones.

I find that generally moving around very quickly works best with the Thraddash ship...

A couple of enemies are tough customers though, but that only makes it more fun...

I LOVE THE SHOFIXTI the honor the rage there love of battle and if i was to take one step down from my favorite it would have to be the Ors those fish are funny campers lol

and my lest favorite races are in first place the Ilwrath with there clockng ships and in 2nd is the anoying Ur Quan group that fly the black ship

Hey, to those thraddash haters out there, have you ever killed 25 of their ships so they make you their teacher? What could be better than pig latin?

My personal favourite race is Melnorme. Their cultural structure is very interesting, and I hope to hear from those cunning cyclopses in future.

Melnorme are also propably only civilization you can't place anywhere in good-evil-axis, what is one of their positive sides, too, cogito.

I played the original game many years ago and really had a sense of understanding with the Utwig, their voice as I imagined it was a deep, morose, Type O Negative vampire guy.
But when I heard this voice, this shrill, high-pitched sound of ultimate suffering which brings forth images of a pimply, fat self-absorbed adolescent that cuts himself for attention, I was pretty much outraged.

They probably were my favorite until they were given that voice.
But now? Now...
The Arilou obviously hold a special place in my soul, but so do the Kohr-Ah, pretty much polar opposites, so it works.

mine would be the orz i first encountered them and couldnt stop lauging at their dialog and also because i cant work out what they are:
a frog
a crab
a lobster
a bird

I've always thought that the Orz looked like (or at least, what we perceived them to look like) a combination of a parrot fish (http://www.bizarrefun.com/FAH2224.jpg) and a puffer fish (http://mfrost.typepad.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/unknown.jpg), with snail-like (http://mfrost.typepad.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/126701296_e7d64dda65.jpg) eyestalks.

My most favourite are the Arilou cause i know to pilot their ships best hehe

And the VUX cause they are so arrogant that you have to like them

Best race is the Orz, by far.

The Orz for me--they're so fascinating.  And it's so hard to be sure about anything with them because of all those linguistic oddities; it just makes me want to know everything about them.  Also, they manage to be friendly and pleasant and quite creepy at the same.  I like that.

I very much like the vague sentience of the Mycon, their interesting dialogue, and their very kickass Precursors theme.

I have to confess that there is more than 1 favourite race: Arilou, Spathi, Yehat, Pkunk

Arilous are so wise (and annoying.. they never let me visit their surface (what a suprise)) and helpful (thought they didn't want to join the new alliance of free stars.). And I like their ships, because of its teleport (as a secondary "weapon") and because gravity doesn't affect to the ship.

Spathis are cowards but i like their sentences... for example: "I know you are going to torture me, so let's just get this over with right now.
The coordinates of my homeworld, Spathiwa, are 241.6 : 368.7
and the ultra-secret Spathi Cypher, which is known only by me and several billion other Spathi
is `Huffi-Muffi-Guffi'.

And always so-loved, the pkunk.. I like the Pkunks because they are always so HAPPY and merry.

The Arilou, because I like what  I don't understand.

My favorite would be the chenjesu. Although I am most amused by the druuge.

Muahaha, my favorite race is a race that has never been called before.

Although they do not excist in numbers or have their own ships, I still find them to my very liking.

Who can be more interesting than the creatures feared by the dreadfull ur-quan and kohr-ah!  8)

That's right, my favorite race is the Dnynarri, the most evil of evil. I truly wish to see more about them if a new SC is being produced. 
When I was playing SC2, I had wished sometimes that I could threaten the ur-quan and kohr-ah with the Dnynarri in my possesion, but unfortunately, the producers did not give me that ability  :(

As for the ships which I most feared with my fully pimped mighty precursor battleship, I would have to go for the Umgah. I never had the feeling I was save for the sudden movements of their ships. I rather take on an armada of kohr-ah ships then fight one umgah ship.

Okay, I'm starting to sound like a broken record. But those generally are among my favorites -- I like them all pretty well, actually, but those in particular are good, depending on how I feel.
