Title: Request for Save Game Format Change
Post by: Mister.Donut on February 19, 2006, 05:33:10 am
The last time I checked, the save game content gets dumped out as binary values. I would really like to see the save game format changed to something that is easily human readable and therefore editable with little effort.

it aint that hard to edit it as is anyways, unless your hex editor illiterate.
you could always use the save game editor that can be found on my site (link in the sig)

Somehow I don't think many people are familiar with hex editors.
It's amazing how many people didn't learn hex in school.

Safe hex anyone?

It will be there somewhere in the future. We're likely to add some checksum though, so that it won't be too tempting to cheat by manual editing. You could still edit the files and generate the checksums yourself ofcourse, but it would serve as a "Are you really really really really sure you want to spoil your game?" dialog.

personally I think this feature is not necessary, or even favorable.
in the same lines you could add a cheat for RU and crewpoints. what's the idea?

The plan is to move all simple game data to XML, and the save game format would be included.
For some of the planned improvements we'd need a new format anyhow. Things like:
  • nameable savegames
  • longer strings for captains and ship name. We've currently got only 16 bytes, which is rather short if you have multibyte characters
  • compatible savegames across different platforms.

In the spirit of pedantry, they're out of order. 0123456789ABCDEF or 123456789ABCDEF0.
