Title: ~Lost it... Post by: Zarla on March 04, 2006, 07:48:33 am Er, feel kinda awkward asking for this but I'm not sure where else to really go, really. I hope someone can help me out.
Anyway, been playing SC2 since it came out (as best I can remember) and I used to have a copy of the Role Playing Resource Guide. I thought it was incredibly cool and I spent hours just reading and absorbing all the detail in it. Lately I've been doing SC2 related fanstuff and since I'm a stickler for random details and such, I wanted ta look at the Roleplaying Guide thingy again ta check on small details and ta see if there was anything in there that leapt out at me ta be drawn or something. Problem is I went looking for my copy of it recently and over time, it's vanished. It's probably lost somewhere in the clutter around my house, never ta be found again, so I tried the link on the PoNaF for it, but it was broken. SO to get to the point, does anyone have a copy of the PDF file they'd be willing ta send my way? I'd be really grateful. So this isn't an entirely begging-type post, I did do some stuff lately that I thought some of ya might be interested in. I haven't really done a lot of Starcon2 fanart, despite my deep love for the game, since the races can be tricky to draw, but I've done my share over time. Lately I played through the game again which kind of kicked me into overdrive for once and now I've got tons of little sketches. Most of them are silly little pencil things but I've done some actual serious stuff here and there. http://www.drdowasure.com/images/msp/Yehatdyingstars.jpg - of note, I did this one digitally while reading that one Honour fic, which I really liked. Maybe I'm just a big sap or something, but I've always found the Shofixti's sacrifice to be incredibly tragic, especially for the "parents" left behind. Mostly though, this was inspired by that one line the Rebels say when they talk about the end of the war. Where is it... "When the Ur-Quan came, the Shofixti fought as immortal heroes!... darting in and out of the Dreadnought formations and then suddenly BLAZING!... like dying stars." It just gave me this very clear mental picture of the scene...just the tiny ships exploding from such a far distance, tiny flares of life in a futile effort to stop the invasion. Don't mind me. Turns out after I drew one Yehat I couldn't stop. IT'S LIKE A SICKNESS OR SOMETHING. Anyway, mostly I just have Yehat sketches at the moment but I did finish another one. http://www.drdowasure.com/images/msp/YehatShofixtihug.JPG - Again I am a huge sap. I always pictured the Yehat totally freaking out and hugging the Shofixti when they found out they were reborn. I'm a big dork that way. They look way too calm here but whatever. I ended up tweaking this into a 800x600 wallpaper too for the heck of it - http://www.drdowasure.com/images/msp/Yehatshofixtiwp2.JPG http://www.drdowasure.com/images/msp/Yehatsketches.GIF - What is the deal with the Yehat's wings/arms? They've got two wing designs in the talk screen. I dunno if that was a mistake or intentional, but my guess is that if it was intentional it'd be some kind of gender difference. Then again I could go on and on for hours justifying or making up random stories about little details no one cares about. Most of the time I went with the elbow-wingfinger thing just for the heck of it. It was fun to draw cause it was so different. http://www.drdowasure.com/images/msp/Yehatisover.GIF - So dramatic. I just like drawing wings. http://www.drdowasure.com/images/msp/UtwigSupoxunderstand.JPG - I love the Utwig but they are so, so easy to make fun of. I DON'T TAKE THIS GAME VERY SERIOUSLY I'M AFRAID. I have to admit that most of my little sketches though involve Admiral ZEX. I'm probably his only and most devoted little fangirl, which is tremendously sad, I know. I've always liked him since I first played the game some twelve years ago or so, and I think it's because of him that I have this weird fondness for the VUX. As a result, most of my goofy Starcon2 doodles involve ZEX. I know it's weird. Shh. http://www.drdowasure.com/images/msp/Zexfwee.gif - Goofyness. http://host.avdns7.com/~zarla/images/msp/Zexhughuman.jpg - This one is actually kind of old but is still rather silly. http://www.drdowasure.com/images/msp/Zexplaydollsi.JPG - I think Spaceballs is responsible for this goofy thing. "No, sir! I didn't see you playing with your dolls again, sir!" ANYWAY if I finish some other stuff or do some other silly doodles I'll put up links, if anyone's interested. Title: Re: ~Lost it... Post by: VOiD on March 04, 2006, 08:12:51 am Haha! Wonderful! That absolutely made my day!
You know, you're quite an accomplished artist. I sure wouldn't mind seeing more SC related stuff, and I just KNOW I'm not alone in that respect around here. ;) Keep up the good work! I'm thinking it might be good to rewrite this notice as a sticky - if you're looking for PoNaF files and they seem broken, try fixing the prefix to "classicgaming/starcontrol/"; for example: http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?/classicgaming/fan/pablo-chapter1.zip should be rewritten as: http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?/classicgaming/starcontrol/fan/pablo-chapter1.zip or see here: http://uqm.stack.nl/forum/index.php?topic=2832.0 Title: Re: ~Lost it... Post by: Halleck on March 04, 2006, 03:33:49 pm Haha... I like the emo Utwig. Nice ZEX too.
BTW, a good place to look for old game manuals is replacementdocs.com (http://www.replacementdocs.com/), although I'm not sure if they have the role playing resource guide or not. Title: Re: ~Lost it... Post by: Clay on March 05, 2006, 05:07:13 am Agreed, awesome stuff! Really nice pieces. I was pleasantly surprised. ^_^ The reflections in the first is nice, and I love the shofixti/Yehat one.
As for the humor ones...Zex with dolls = the win! Title: Re: ~Lost it... Post by: Zarla on March 05, 2006, 07:43:25 am Quote You know, you're quite an accomplished artist. and touching. I think I need a hug now. Title: Re: ~Lost it... Post by: Draxas on March 06, 2006, 02:28:35 am I love the art. ZEX and his dolls is awesome.
Am I think only one that feels that the Utwig follow-up should have him with the old "CRAWLING IN MY SKIN!" tagline that seems to be representative of their angst? Also, am I the only one that feels like a goofy little "Punching Jelly" comic strip is in order? ;) Title: Re: ~Lost it... Post by: Clay on March 06, 2006, 05:41:01 am The "We're coming aboard" line is what gets me. Seriously, it needs to be put in a sequel or something.
Title: Re: ~Lost it... Post by: *Loner* on March 06, 2006, 07:36:10 am Wow love the art, esp the detail on the Yehat/Shofixti picture. Some cool stuff. I could argue that Dashboard is not emo but rather quite sappy acoustic pop, or maybe MTVemo, but that's a debate for another forum...hehe <rubs hands ruefully> ;D
All in all, you have some really good stuff! Title: Re: ~Lost it... Post by: Davey Yungblud on March 06, 2006, 04:00:19 pm Heh heh...Zex with dolls, classic. You know, it's an awesome pic, but I was thinking, shouldn't there be a "Zex's Beauty" doll too? just a thought. GAH! I just love ALLOFIT! Makes me want to..."Use my glowy things", lol. I must admit, I myself have done a lot of fanart as well, though I'm a little to shy to put any of it up. It all sucks anyways, so it's not like it's anyone's loss. and, btw, Zarla, if you need the resource guide, I could send you any bits and peices of it you need, I still have mine.
Title: Re: ~Lost it... Post by: Simon K on March 06, 2006, 06:06:05 pm Oh wow! Those drawings are excellent, cool, awesome, and did I mention excellent? I especially loved the Yehat dying stars one -- the glowing eyes and the one Yehat in the background covering his eyes just make for a great picture. It quite captures how I felt while reading Honour too, actually.
When I first played SC2 (I had played SC1 a loooong time ago, when I was a kid, and made up a large bunch of little stories about that universe, with some of my friends), and met the Yehat-turned-battle-thralls, man, that had an effect. I couldn't stop thinking about how far they had fallen, and couldn't help but sympathize with the Starship Clan Yehat, torn between two loyalties, and their ambiguous honour code. Before I read Honour, I thought a bit about how it must have been for them, forced to choose between loyalty and doing what is right, and being bound to do something they knew and felt to be wrong. I felt sad for them. And I just loved it when I showed them a live Shofixti, and when they come running with the cavalry in the end. Title: Re: ~Lost it... Quote I especially loved the Yehat dying stars one -- the glowing eyes and the one Yehat in the background covering his eyes just make for a great picture. It quite captures how I felt while reading Honour too, actually. Heh, I wasn't sure if anyone would notice the Yehat in the back. :D Ah, so sad. Quote When I first played SC2 (I had played SC1 a loooong time ago, when I was a kid, and made up a large bunch of little stories about that universe, with some of my friends), and met the Yehat-turned-battle-thralls, man, that had an effect. I felt sad for them. And I just loved it when I showed them a live Shofixti, and when they come running with the cavalry in the end. I never played SC1 before playing SC2, so I think the impact of it was lost a little on me, but I always really sympathized with their dilemma and the emotional turmoil that that kind of decision would have caused. To add on to that the horrible tragedy of losing their children, not to mention in such a brave and...what's the word, true-to-themselves fashion, I guess you could say, and it just paints such a sad, conflicted, angry picture. I always felt really fuzzy when I brought the Shofixti back to the Yehat. Just seeing them so happy and ready to fight again. Then again, I also felt really fuzzy when I fixed the Ultron for the Utwig. Just seeing the Utwig happy again made me smile. :D I haven't finished that Pkunk-Yehat thing yet (I am being lazy, shame) but I have some other little doodles around here. http://www.drdowasure.com/images/msp/OrzShofixtigraffiti.GIF - This one was inspired by this one fanfic...I can't remember which one it was...maybe one of the Polensak ones? Anyway, it just had this quick throwaway line that at a big party, some Shofixti were drawing graffiti all over an Orz's battle armor, and the image just grabbed me. Those little Shofixti came out awfully cute. I'm gonna color this someday. http://www.drdowasure.com/images/msp/YehatShofixtiuhh.GIF - This is just silly. http://www.drdowasure.com/images/msp/Ariloupopsin.GIF - This was inspired by that one thing the Arilou say...what was it..."Last night while you were sleeping, I touched your face and you smiled!" Something like that. ANYWAY I just started imagining the Arilou popping in to visit the Captain at awkward times. THERE YOU GO. I did the Arilou from memory so I probably got some details off. I'll fix it when I color it someday. Title: Re: ~Lost it... Post by: Halleck on March 07, 2006, 08:05:11 pm Better to be a poser than a real emo kid. :P
And yes, a beauty drawing would be cool. <- (arne did this one) Also, nice orz. Title: Re: ~Lost it... Post by: Arne on March 07, 2006, 08:52:59 pm Hahah nice!
Mmm, the Yehat wing joint error is amusing, it's sort of like drawing the thumb on the wrong side of the hand, or worse since it's difficult to move an entire hand by mutation... stuff in nature tends to build on the same basic structure... Oh my, how quickly I go OT. Title: Re: ~Lost it... Post by: Vee-R on March 07, 2006, 10:05:56 pm Hmmm, the Utwig don't really strike me as emo, aside from the silly voice-acting. Their profound spiritual fatalism and existential sense of loss would place them firmly in the doom metal genre.
Of course, that would make the Pkunk a '60s flower-power band; the Ilwrath - Satanic black metal; the Thraddash - a particularly macho-posturing gangsta rap act; the Chenjesu - electro-ambient; the Chmmr - industrial; the Yehat - martial nationalistic neo-folk; and the Zoq-Fot-Pik - a free jazz bar band (with every player trying to solo over the others). The Androsynth could be any major-label, insta-bake, flavor-of-the-month teen pop idol (clones, anyone?). A few tribute/cover bands are also in the running: the Arilou (a tribute to UFO); the Orz (a tribute to Phish); the Mycon (a tribute to Magma); the Supox (a tribute to Carnivore) and the Kohr-Ah (a tribute to Genocide Organ). The Mmrnmhrm will be covering Kraftwerk ("We are the Robots"), the Shofixti will pay homage to The Vapors ("Turning Japanese") and the Slylandro will play an exciting rendition of Morbid Angel's "Hymn to a Gas Giant". Also, there are rumors about the Taalo planning a reunion, even though the music press has for ages considered their style of old-fashioned hard rock to be.... well.... extinct. Their management has denied accusations that the band is just playing *time jokes*. Naturally, the Melnorme and the Druuge are going to come up with lucrative record deals for everyone (containing generous amounts of small print) and fight over signing the next big thing. Which spells doom for us Earthlings, especially when they both find out how many MP3's we all have on our hard drives. Title: Re: ~Lost it... Post by: Simon K on March 08, 2006, 06:49:37 pm Ah yes, the Arilou! They're one of my very favourite races (a triple-sided weird-ass coin toss between Arilou, Yehat and Melnorme, really). I think the one you did looks reasonably true to the SC2 Arilou (the SC3 ones.... yecch. They look like a pointy-eared version of the Elephant Man, brutally awakened after a six-day drinking binge), although with a somewhat more "Anime" touch to it. There isn't much Arilou or Melnorme-related fan art around, though. If I was better at drawing (and had more time :-/ Most of what I do have is spent coding), I'd just love to take a shot at what Falayaralfali might look like. Or what a Melnorme trade ship looks like on the inside -- given the way the Melnorme alter the colours of their surroundings given their mood and which things they want to look at, I think it'd look interesting, to say the least.
I saw someone had made a sketch of most member races of the New Alliance (except Supox and one of the three ZoqFotPik, if I remember right -- also no Yehat, but I suppose they aren't technically an alliance member -- there was a Pkunk, though!), after the war. I can't remember where I found it, but that was a pretty neat picture. Title: Re: ~Lost it... Quote The gun is fine for a human gun, but I wonder how its ergonomics are on a Yehat. Yeah, I wasn't sure how to do a Yehatoriented gun. I'm not sure if they really have a thumb for a grip (since their hand designs are so inconsistent wooo) or how they would use it. For some reason I picture Yehat fighting mostly with their talons before weaponry (that is, if they HAVE legs...which I assume they do but their speech picture never really makes that clear...) but I do wonder how they'd operate a gun. I should try some sketches and see if I can work out anything. Quote Also, the graffiti picture makes much more sense in color. Heh, most of my stuff does. My sketches are kind of messy. Quote You wouldn't happen to have any plans of making wallpapers, would you? I've already did the two in the thread, the Yehat-Pkunk one and the Yehat-Shofixti one. I might do more, if I sketch up something that'll work for one. Or do you mean like...wallpapers in different resolutions? God I have FALLEN IN LOVE with this Hyperspace remix by Saibuster. It just makes me feel so happy inside. God I'm a dork. I haven't really colored anything lately, I've just been doing little sketches. Mostly of Ur-Quan. I was reading up on them and thinking about what they must look like as a whole. They were described as the top predator on their planet (or a predator or something) so they must have had some limbs or way of moving that's pretty quick...and they were also based on the carnivorous caterpillar which I couldn't find a real clear shot of, so I went off what I knew from their pics in game to come up with... http://www.drdowasure.com/images/msp/UrQuanarms.GIF I couldn't remember off hand if you see the end of an Ur-Quan's tentacle on screen (I think you see it in melee, when they send out fighters, don't you?) so I gave them two sets of arms with "hands" at the end kind of for manipulating things/holding the slave baton and two back tentacles with spikes at the end, maybe for holding onto the trees of their homeworld and the ceiling on their Dreadnoughts. I think their body is probably longer than it is here, but I was just trying to get an idea of how to draw a full-body Ur-Quan. Makes me wonder how they were predators though if they don't really have a mouth with all those tentacles or maybe their world's creatures didn't need to be chewed or something, or maybe they're like the caterpillar. I wish I could get a clear shot of that thing. http://www.drdowasure.com/images/msp/UrQuanhardcore.GIF - actually these are before I did the hand thing, so they're all spike-ended. The tentacles I mean. Yes I do make stupid random notes to myself why do you ask http://www.drdowasure.com/images/msp/UrQuanslavebaton.GIF - I always wondered, "why a baton?" hee hee http://www.drdowasure.com/images/msp/UrQuanonthenaught.GIF - This originally started just as the Spathi and the Umgah with the paper bag, then I just went for it and threw in the Ur-Quan, Ilwrath, and VUX. I'm planning on coloring this one at some point. I'll probably lengthen the Ur-Quan's body a bit...I was trying to think of a kind of background I could put behind everything, but I'm bad at machinery so it's pretty blank. Hehehe, I just love the idea of an Umgah thrall constantly tricking and harrassing the Spathi thrall. http://www.drdowasure.com/images/msp/UrQuanpose.GIF - It turns out that Ur-Quan are really, really fun to draw. Woop forgot this one. http://www.drdowasure.com/images/msp/Druugesketch.GIF - Done from memory, so it's probably pretty off. WOO. I tried to do some Melnorme but I'm still having trouble with them. GOD WHY AM I NOT ASLEEP AAAA Title: Re: ~Lost it... Post by: GeomanNL on March 30, 2006, 04:33:42 pm I'd think their legs would be somewhat smaller, and they might have a strong pair of claws at the end of their body. That would be more like a caterpillar.

I like it because it gives you a peek onboard the Dreadnought - a scene like this is what's hinted at in the dialogue, isn't it? The Spathi and VUX have lovely expressions on them. Ilwrath looks like he's really keen. Good stuff. I hope to see more! --Eino Title: Re: ~Lost it... Post by: Arne on March 30, 2006, 07:44:22 pm Is that a Kohr-Ah with slaves? The plate would lead me to believe it is. I'm not sure what kind of crew they have, the Kzer-Za has slaves, but it seems somewhat out of character to have some 40 huge (possibly territorial) Kzer-Za on the same ship. I could imagine them using strange octopus robots or something.
As for the UrQ anatomy, I image something along the lines of a body with the same length/thickness proportion as a... hotdog, with 4 arms (or legs) on each end. The rear ones being used for hanging and mating. Title: Re: ~Lost it... Post by: Draxas on March 31, 2006, 01:23:00 am Very nice art as always. However, I always envisioned the Ur-Quan as having shorter legs in back, maybe more centipede-like or something. Long and grippy enough to hang from their cargo nets (or whatever), and useful for getting around, but not much good for anything like manipulating objects; that's what the long tentacles in the front sections are for.
Also, on a marginally related note, I actually LOL'd at the slave baton picture. I always thought the Ur-Quan just intimidated their slaves into obedience, but I guess the occasional thwack doesn't hurt either. ;) Title: Re: ~Lost it... What kind of claws, do you think? I'm trying to visualize it...if the claws come from beneath an Ur-Quan, than it seems to me that in order to hang from the ceiling they'd need to bend over double...something like _`) where the small ` are their claws. I hope my little ascii thing makes sense. But being constantly bent like that seems so uncomfortable, as well as leaving their underbelly open fer attack...then again, maybe Ur-Quan's bellies aren't soft like ours. Who knows? Could always have the front tentacles, then have the back claws coming from on top the Ur-Quan's back, which would look weird but hey, they're aliens, they can do that kind of thing. I'll have to give it a try. Quote I liked this one a lot. I like it because it gives you a peek onboard the Dreadnought - a scene like this is what's hinted at in the dialogue, isn't it? I remember reading somewhere that there was only one Ur-Quan aboard a dreadnought since they were so territorial, so I always envisioned their ship filled with various slaves and such. Heh, the VUX's expression cracked me up. It was kind of an accident too. I like the idea of the Ilwrath prattling on about Dogar and Kazon and the VUX like "Someday I will kill you. Someday." Quote Is that a Kohr-Ah with slaves? The plate would lead me to believe it is. If the one-Ur-Quan-a-ship thing is true, then who else is on the Kohr-Ah ship? I can't imagine the supercrazy Kohr-Ah being able to tolerate one another...then again, who knows? Heh, I like the octopus robot idea tho. Quote As for the UrQ anatomy, I image something along the lines of a body with the same length/thickness proportion as a... hotdog, with 4 arms (or legs) on each end. The rear ones being used for hanging and mating. Eight legs then! I can see that, yeees. That's what I thought the rear ones would be used for too. It's tricky stuff. I wish we got a good full look at the Ur-Quan in-game. Quote Very nice art as always. However, I always envisioned the Ur-Quan as having shorter legs in back, maybe more centipede-like or something. Centipede, eh? Interesting! Hmmm...So like, let's say just long enough to reach around the body to the ceiling nets or whatever? I can see that...I'll hafta give sketching that a try. A centipede-ish Ur-Quan would be interesting. Quote Also, on a marginally related note, I actually LOL'd at the slave baton picture. Haha, I was just thinking about why they'd use a baton and then bam, the mental image popped in my head. Hee hee. Sadly, I haven't really drawn anything lately. Hopefully I'll try and get something colored soon... |
