Title: Is this game any good?
Post by: Big Mac on March 28, 2006, 01:04:28 am
I've been searching and searching for a space themed game.  What kind of features are in SC2?  I hope it is what I've been looking for.

Look....I am new to this site, but I have been an SC fan since SC1 came out. My friends and I wasted most of high school and college on it. We are all STILL fans. I know you are asking for elements, but that is like asking what are the ingredients in a cake. You really just need to try it. If it is your bag you will not have a life for several months. If you don't like it....well...fair enough...you didn't lose any cash. But there is a reason there is such a strong devoted fan base.

Keep in mind the game is older. Over ten years now. So
input is done via keyboard. This is something that surprises
most newbies I introduce to this game. Also, the
graphics are 2D and fairly simple. This isn't a
"Wow, look at that!" game, this is a "Wow, this is
cool/funny/interesting!" game.

This game rates far better then most modern games do.

And unlike most games, you wont be able to beat it on your first shot through, at least not without looking up the solutions to various puzzles and mysteries presented.

The game also offers a freedom that most games neglect. You can choose to ally with an alien race and they'll help you (Or not, depending on whom you ally with), or you can decide that your Empire cannot tolerate such filth and obliterate them at every opportunity.

You can be a dirty rotten slave trader or a warrior, a cunning diplomat or a ruthless barbarian, a miner or a hunter, or a combination of all these things at various points throughout the game.

Put simply, if you enjoy engaging story, entertaining dialogue, fun gameplay and a challenging mystery, you'll get them here.

If your a "Ooohh! EXPLOZIONZ! WOW!" type of person... umm, **points to Earth 2160**

You cant go wrong with this little gem. And if the music isnt to your liking in various areas, there is a remix project that has remixed almost all the music in the game thus far, improving the experience. Personally I think most of the music holds up rather well even after ten years, but some of those remixes are astounding in quality also.

If you're not impressed by the game, I'll eat this here hat, garnished with this here Shoe Horn and spiced up with a catalytic converter for taste.*

*Contents of such a meal may pose a real health risk and as such may not be eaten in the event that it does. Such health risks may extend to all or part of the above listed ingredients. If you've read this far, Your soul now officially belongs to Cronos and theres not a damn thing you can do about it. Also, the agreement to eat the above listed ingredients is now null and void. Muahahaha!

Is this thread for real?

I asked this on another thread, can someone who didn't enjoy SC2 (or 1) the first time round enjoy UQM? So I'd be interested in a newby review of the game.

I had never played the game before UQM 0.3, and right now I think it's one of the best games I ever played, if not THE best game. So yeah, this is one of those games that simply never stop to enjoy. And about the graphics, I think they suit the game quite good, I don't think any modern graphics could express the SC universe as good as UQM.

I tried SC2 back in the day but I just didn't get it.  I think I didn't go to earth and find the station or something.  But over time I became aware of just how highly people thought of it, so when I heard about UQM I decided to give it another shot.  I'm now totally hooked!  It's a really fun game, but it's very nonlinear so it can be hard to figure out what to do next at any given point in time.

I've had a number of people try it out and then throw it through a window because it wasn't what they expected.  These tended to fall into two categories.

Expecting a CRPG-style difficulty gradient -- which is to say, combat starts out trivial and scales as the plot advances.  This smacks you hard in UQM, where the first two common hostiles you meet (Avengers and Probes) pretty much eat Earth Cruisers for lunch.

Misinterpreting plot cues -- Including one case where after getting the warning from the Drone, they fled Sol entirely (and were then, of course, thrashed by Probes).

The fact that the first thing a new player really needs to do is practice a lot in Super Melee so that the early game is survivable is one of the reasons I hesitate to consider SC2/UQM an RPG.

It's more like JRPG (though it does not have any Japanese characters :D ). Fixed (although not so straight) plot, massive dialogues, quests, separate (although not turn-based) combat scene, cool music.

Have been playing SC2 from the very beginning. It's surprising to find out numerous bugs fixed in UQM (THANKS THANKS THANKS). It was quite hard to play original DOS game 'cause of random hangs in StarMap (and sometimes in alien dialogs).

It's of course great to find new GFX here. I'm with UQM since 0.2 and was watching the progress almost each week. Have built some CVS versions with my own hands :) since then. This game can be called 'classical' for sure, because it's alive and kicking nowadays, while most #$%^ 3D shooters SUCK...

I was actually thinking of Final Fantasy 6-8 as the games that would make you expect exactly the wrong thing from UQM's difficulty curve.

UQM also isn't a "sandbox" game like GTA: note that one of the most common patches on the Forum is one removing the time limit so you can explore randomly and/or completely.

But it has elements of both; your effectiveness is as much how good your ship is as much as how good you are, and nothing but your fuel tanks limit where you can explore.

The dialogues are much closer to LucasArts's heyday in third-person graphical adventures, as are a lot of the key-item puzzles.  You have more flexibility in how you deal with various races as well than is traditional for such games, which moves it closer to sandbox.

The combat literally hearkens to the first action game ever made, and is totally unapologetic about it.

Years ago I described it as "a classic space adventure, action, exploration, diplomacy, and God Knows What Else" game.  That's the best I can do, even now.

Personally, I find it easiest to compare SC2 to the Fallout games; they're very much alike in many respects, with the exception of action vs. turn-based combat. The time limit is there, the dialog, the ability to explore freely, and the sometimes seemingly random combat difficulty curve. However, finding more examples of similar games is a challenge...

Speaking of, if anyone here has never played Fallout or Fallout 2, you owe it to yourself to find and play them ASAP.

There is also a non-gameplay similarity: in both cases, the first two games were excellent, but the third instalment really brought things to a standstill.

The Ultima games (specifically 6-7) are extremely non-linear, have tons of dialog, and sometimes you get plastered into dough if you make a wrong turn early in your adventuring career.  U7.5 (serpent Isle & silver seed(7.75)), U8 & U9 were slightly more linear, but you still had a lot of mock-freedom.  None had a time limit, however.

Hah, true, and both of those third installments were also made by someone other than the original creators. Eerie, that.

Incidentally, I heard a rumor ages ago about a proposed Fallout MMO. If it's true (and done as well as I would hope), it might be the first MMO game I'd ever seriously consider renting from the local game store.

I just stumbled across this game and I am going...WOW..just what I have been looking for. I like the openness of the game...it is not a 'lead you by the nose' story. The combat is fun...those darn probes!!!.
Funny without trying to point out its gags, good depth, playable, challanging.
I takes some time to remember to NOT use the mouse and learn the key commands.
A good game that I missed out on in the past. I have played new games with spectacular graphics and got bored quickly.

I completed the game and i never practiced in Super Melee. Indeed, when i met enemies early in the game i simply used to flee ;D But new players CAN play without practicing.

Right, but the ones who give up after the first three combats can't ;-)

I simply love this game since I first played it in DOS mode. Its been over 10 years. :)
So the answer is, NO, this game is not only good. This game is GREAT ! I really hope to see the sequel to UQM.
