Title: Orz, Kohr-Ah, Slylandro doodles Post by: Arne on March 30, 2006, 01:03:36 am Well, I'm not happy with any of these, I had a strange lack of flow (and patience). It always happens when I got expectations. The Orz combat suits should be pretty fun to illustrate being machanoid and all but I just ended up frustrated with things not working out. I got impatient and just threw some sloppy stuff together.
Pencil doodles. Some kind of mothership there. (http://web.telia.com/~u48508900/games/orz_suits.jpg) Recon/Exploration version with large window and some searchlights. Not sure of the Orz actually need to scout though, they should have the same kind of overview as us flipping through animation sheets, possibly making them 5 dimensional (4D+time sliding). They certainly does not need that communication antenna on the suits, so that's not a communication antenna, it's a... *squeezer* umm yeah, definately a *squeezer*. Fail at composition. (http://web.telia.com/~u48508900/games/orzbad.jpg) Would be interesting to see what happens if they stick their fingers in further though, maybe they do that when they're really *frumple*. I'd guess their ships and suits are actually built in *heavyspace* and not a projection. In any way I thought they could use a more combat oriented combat suit. Title: Re: Some Orz doodles Post by: Zeep-Eeep on March 30, 2006, 04:03:36 pm I like the picture of the Orz where they're wearing suits
that obviously do not have communication antenna. Nope, definately not communication antenna. Title: Re: Some Orz doodles Post by: guesst on March 30, 2006, 09:31:52 pm Arne, as usual... *worship*
Personally I always tried making them more cumbersome. I seem to remember Commander Hayse (sp?) talking about how "cute" they were clomping around in their enviro suits. You could try moving the feet to where the arms of that last one are and making the feet some sort of arm things. That would force them to waddle and seem less intimidating. At first. Mwahahaha! Title: Re: Some Orz doodles Post by: Arne on March 30, 2006, 10:46:33 pm Yeah, these feet aren't quite 'clompish', they're more like ballerinas. I really dislike the Megaman X (and some gundam) style feet though.
(http://web.telia.com/~u48508900/games/orz_suits3.jpg) Edit: Yeah! Who's controlling the *smell* now you *silly cows*!?!? Title: Re: Some Orz doodles Post by: Deus Siddis on March 31, 2006, 04:18:28 pm What if you tried reversing the direction of the center joint in the legs? Gave them bird legs, so the "ankle" was at the level the "knee" would be at on a human. Sort of an ED-209 meets the hard suit diving craft look of your drawings. Maybe make the legs at least the same size as the arms, too (but without bell-bottoms, as you said.) Just a thought, anyway.

Title: Re: Some Orz doodles Post by: Megagun on March 31, 2006, 10:22:19 pm /me wonders why people always have to quote images in their quotes, too.. Why can't everyone just replace the image with a little boldified [IMAGE GOES HERE] thing? Mleh..
Title: Re: Some Orz doodles Post by: JonoPorter on April 01, 2006, 04:27:39 am Well if it’s not an antenna then it must be a receiver or sensor of some kind. Maybe it’s a Power receiver for the power feed that the mother ship supplies. So the suit doesn’t have to pack in its own power supply, just a capacitor.
Title: Re: Some Orz doodles Post by: Deus Siddis on April 01, 2006, 05:19:41 pm That would explain why marines never run out of fuel (unless the mothership is blown away,) as fighters do.
Title: Re: Some Orz doodles Post by: Arne on April 03, 2006, 08:47:04 pm Here's an interior draft. The bottom of the ship center is static, and the turret is the upper part (somewhat like a lid). The wings have fuel/engine/propulsion stuff.
(The sensors are pretty large since they're for sensing *silly places* or something to that effect.) (http://web.telia.com/~u48508900/games/orz-ship.jpg) Edit: Here's a relevant quote from the conversations with Cmdr Hayes: Quote We have been invaded by an alien race calling themselves the `Orz', though so far the invasion is a friendly one. The fishlike creatures have been stomping around the base in their robotic walking exoskeletons which look like combat vac-suits, if you ask me. Hmm maybe I should reduce the sensor size a bit and have a small room go in there... Edit: did so. Title: Re: Some Orz doodles Post by: Arne on April 05, 2006, 01:22:41 am Thnakssk!
Here's what I had in mind for Kohr-Ah. There's one Kohr-Ah oboard the ship in a dome somewhere in the front. There it hangs (along the ship axis) all day, sorting the bones on its plate after shape and species. As crew, they have rather nasty robots called Vivisectors. They don't consider their custom built robots to be a rivaling species, and it was the only solution for them, being too territorial to share ship with other Ur-Quan. The Kzer-Za solved the crew problem by using slaves. I had to size down the shuriken so it doesn't look silly-big. (http://web.telia.com/~u48508900/games/kohr-ah-interior.jpg) (no interior yet) Title: Re: Some Orz (and now Kohr-Ah) doodles Post by: Arne on April 05, 2006, 05:30:49 am Marauder@my_scale has a volume of (49m/2.3)^3 = 9670cu.m
Engine, structure, ship hardware are 80% of the volume, which gives two (10*10*10)m rooms of free space to be allocated for rooms and passages. Slylandro Probe Evolved. Title: Re: Orz, Kohr-Ah, Slylandro doodles Post by: Zeep-Eeep on April 05, 2006, 02:11:37 pm I was thinking the Korh-Ah robots look a bit like an
electric shaving razor....with arms. It's kind of cool. I always thought the Quan trained themselves to get along with each other. That is, putting crew-only on the ships. Well, with a talking pet. I kind of like the probe idea. This would explain why the probe appears to have crew, but it doesn't have any life forms on board. Little parallel computers. They're cute too. Title: Re: Orz, Kohr-Ah, Slylandro doodles Post by: Arne on April 05, 2006, 06:59:19 pm Yeah, I realized that it looks a bit Matrixy, but it was unintentional. It does bother me a bit though. Maybe I should try another version, I'm not quite happy with how the head is placed. I had the idea of a similar design since earlier, and it was in fact inspired by a 3 headed shaving machine.
Maybe something more like the sw ep5 imperial probe? My Probe crew was initially 'socketed', but due to a damage in the replication system one of them gained sentience, or atleast some sort of selfish motivation. It then used the replication device to... tweak things a bit. I'm thinking maybe the original one is like the Borg queen, with a special body it can hook up to, putting it over all the rest of the 'Capacitors' or whatever they'll be called. Title: Re: Orz, Kohr-Ah, Slylandro doodles Post by: Arne on April 10, 2006, 05:31:33 am Dreadnought WIP. There's some gravity gizmos that allow the pilot to hang along the travel axis of the ship. The rest of the ship has 'normal' down gravity. The pilot is surrounded by everything it needs, if it needs something it shouts for slaves to bring it. If the pilot absolutely need to get around the corridors are large anough to allow a little stroll... crawl.
There's 34 fighters in the hangars. They're placed vertically and attached to a rail system that can bring them into launch position where they're rotated and launched. There's also a perron (? like on a subway station) in the hangar where the slaves gather before launch. The slaves live around the reactor in rather tight cells (like a shared prison cell), although there's 2 floors of them. Can I have your babies? Please? Title: Re: Orz, Kohr-Ah, Slylandro doodles Post by: Halleck on April 12, 2006, 09:32:37 am Nice orz.
These new dreadnoughts seem a bit more "canonical" than your old turret-laden designs... I think I like these better. Title: Re: Orz, Kohr-Ah, Slylandro doodles Post by: Reimanu Sune on May 20, 2006, 05:44:04 am Having just now come across your artwork Arne, I have to say that I'm very impressed. While I'm not certain how I feel about the new ships (Except the Mother Ark which is perfect), I adore your pictures of aliens, both starfaring and planet bound. Thanks.
One question though, where are the bathrooms? Title: Re: Orz, Kohr-Ah, Slylandro doodles Post by: Arne on May 20, 2006, 06:37:15 pm Thanks :)
I'm guessing the Dreadnaught slaves just gets a crap bucket, and the Orz probably emitt strange alien ooze, possibly they just fart producing the bubbles seen, sort of like a fizzy drink. I did draw a bathroom for the Vindicator crew quarters (old pic). (http://itchstudios.com/psg/sce/cabin.jpg) Title: Re: Orz, Kohr-Ah, Slylandro doodles Post by: Anthony on May 26, 2006, 10:49:43 pm That's a nice drawing of the crew quarters. I imagine that these quarters can be stacked together by the look of it :D
The Dreadnought is also awesome! :D:D Title: Re: Orz, Kohr-Ah, Slylandro doodles Post by: Zeep-Eeep on May 26, 2006, 11:01:36 pm Question: 34 fighters? Isn't it possible for all non-pilot crew to be
launched? As for bathrooms, perhaps some species just sweat out their unused waste or maybe they stick their tuckasus in the airlock. Title: Re: Orz, Kohr-Ah, Slylandro doodles Post by: Arne on May 27, 2006, 12:55:00 pm Yeah I know the Dreadnought can launch something like 39 fighters but how often do they do that? Seems like a foolish thing to do. I figured 34 would cover nearly all situations. The dreadnought crew quarters are like prison cells (so there's a little general 'toilet' of some sort), whilst the Vindy crew quarter are more luxorious. I designed them to fit into the crew module (http://itchstudios.com/psg/sce/crewpodrooms.jpg). There's still plenty of room for activity rooms, life support or whatever.
Title: Re: Orz, Kohr-Ah, Slylandro doodles Post by: Lance_Vader on May 30, 2006, 03:01:52 am Orz have the *GO! GO!* do you know?
I really like the labels, especially the "Big *Frumple* Gun." Seems appropriate, and it gives your art some good flavor. |
