Title: StarFlight Post by: MasterGrazzt on June 06, 2006, 05:41:16 am Any other StarFlight fans about?
That's it. What more do you want? It's a simple question... now answer it! ::) Title: Re: StarFlight Post by: Defender on June 06, 2006, 05:47:13 am Star Flight was part of my Sega Genesis collection back in the day. Very fond memories of staying up all night playing that game.
Played the Pc version once through DosBox. Boy, was the Genesis version a nice upgrade ;D Still need to play Star Flight 2. Maybe when I'm done with Final Fantasy Origins-FF2. Title: Re: StarFlight Post by: MasterGrazzt on June 06, 2006, 06:10:05 am The funny thing is that the Genesis version of StarFlight is actually StarFlight 2.
Title: Re: StarFlight Post by: Deus Siddis on June 06, 2006, 09:01:58 pm Starflight (the macintosh version) is my favorite game of all time. Nothing has filled the shoes of the starflight series, in all the years past its release.
Quote Played the Pc version once through DosBox. Boy, was the Genesis version a nice upgrade Aye, coming from playing micro magic's macintosh/amiga port, the original pc version was difficult to get used to for me as well. I've never been able to stand the Genesis version, it tried to merge the gameplay of Starflight and Star Control 2 into one game and failed miserably in the process, IMHO. Quote The funny thing is that the Genesis version of StarFlight is actually StarFlight 2. No, it is not Starflight 2: Trade Routes of the Cloud Nebula, it is the first Starflight game. There is no way to play Starflight 2 on a Genesis. BTW, I noticed that SC loyalists call Starflight "StarFlight" or "Star Flight" and SF loyalists refer to Star Control as "Starcontrol" (as I used to do.) You can almost always tell which game someone played first, by their spelling. :) Title: Re: StarFlight Post by: MasterGrazzt on June 08, 2006, 01:14:40 am Are you sure? I'm sure I remember the first message you get from Interstel in StarFlight 2 (I don't care if it's not the real name or not, it looks cool! :P) being in the Genesis version of StarFlight. It's very likely I'm just misremembering, though.
If I came off as insulting DEFIANT (although I was tempted to, for him mentioning playing Final Fantasy ::) ), I apologize. Title: Re: StarFlight Post by: Deus Siddis on June 08, 2006, 05:09:58 am Quote Are you sure? When I briefly played the genesis version, I encountered Veloxi, Mechans, Gazurtoid and Minstrels. No sign of Tandelou, Dweenle, G'Nunk, etc. The Starmap was also the same as it was in the first Starflight. Quote If I came off as insulting DEFIANT (although I was tempted to, for him mentioning playing Final Fantasy ), I apologize. I really don't think anyone is insulted, nor is anyone trying to be insulting. Using these internet forums, we can't accurately communicate tonality or facial expressions, though, so things can get interpreted incorrectly. Played the Pc version once through DosBox. Boy, was the Genesis version a nice upgrade ;D Still need to play Star Flight 2. Maybe when I'm done with Final Fantasy Origins-FF2. I did a websearch to see what I could find out about this game having never played. I found a place to DL a front end to play SF1 and SF2 plus these same versions with money cheats. (Srry didn't book it but I think it's cracked anyway, don't want to encourage teh bad.) Anyway tried playing, it's definately dated and it moved too fast in hyperspace on my PC. So I went to console classix which has a Genisis emulator and the SF1 game. This is actually a pretty cool game. I am suprised just how similar to SC2 this game is. I did find the initial character creating and assigning a bit tedious and orbiting planets a little cheesy. I liked the planet landing/exploring alot. I didn't get too far my first game due to a fuel shortage and unfortunately there is no way to save a game when using CC's roms. I do recall seeing the SF2 box cover in the store back in the day just never read or heard enough about the game to try it. Interesting none-the-less. Title: Re: StarFlight Post by: Deus Siddis on June 16, 2006, 12:00:46 am Playing the macintosh or amiga version gives you the full experience of the original game, without all the bugs, and with improved graphics.
Title: Re: StarFlight Post by: Razorback on June 16, 2006, 08:08:23 am Amigas were truly the top-end machines for their day. Star Control 1 on the Amiga has to be the best version of them all, and there was another space exploration game I played on the Amiga that was pretty damn good, but I can't recall the name of it now to save my life.
It had four difficulty settings, each one presented you with a different adversary. The tactical screen was primarily a rotating starmap similar to SC1. I remember the end cenematic for finishing the first setting showed you the ruler of that enemy race brought to you in shackles, then you put a gun to his head and fire. Anyone know what the name of it is? Played it once at a friend's house and it made a good impression. Title: Re: StarFlight Post by: RTyp06 on June 19, 2006, 03:27:43 am Well it looks like Starflight has enough dedicated fans that some are even trying and make their own sequal, "Starflight III: Mysteries of the Universe"
http://www.starflightcentral.com/ Deja Vu... Low and behold they're programming it in C++ and using Allegro.. They're also asking for programmers to help them complete the project... They have a working demo of the hyperspace portion, not sure what else they've got.. Title: Re: StarFlight Post by: Deus Siddis on June 19, 2006, 05:40:17 am Quote Well it looks like Starflight has enough dedicated fans that some are even trying and make their own sequal, "Starflight III: Mysteries of the Universe." Golly. Quote They're also asking for programmers to help them complete the project... Damn, if only I knew how to code. It is just too bad they can't find more fans with the coding skills and the motivation to help them out with a focused effort, instead of watching on the sidelines or buggering out. I can do some 3D art in blender, but from the looks of their homepage, I'd just get blown away by their existing art talent. :'( Quote They have a working demo of the hyperspace portion, not sure what else they've got.. I have a hunch that whatever alpha build they're on is much more advanced than that nav demo. Thrynn: The Thrynn are cunning reptiles not to be trusted. When dealing with the Thrynn assume a friendly posture. They may attack if you have an Elowan aboard your ship, or if you have been friendly with an Elowan recently. The only solution to this kind of encounter with the Thrynn is to destroy them. Hi. Sorry, but we cannot part with the weapon at this time. However, if you'd please leave your name and home planet, a representative will be sent to annila...um...assist you. (http://www.thelegacy.de/Museum/5497) Yeah, although I can't remember if it was packaged as Supremacy or Overlord. Thanks for the help, going to see if I can find it at Underdogs. Been trying to remember this game for probably 12 years. ***EDIT*** Underdogs has it! The link to it is Supremacy/Overlord at Home of the Underdogs (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=1109). |
