Title: A music question
Post by: XR4-IT on August 10, 2006, 06:26:59 pm
I was going through the sound and music files for the game and I found a file in the lbm directory called airspace.mod. when I played it in winamp the name became mystic shadows I however have never heard this music in the game before and I was wondering if any one could point me to where it is played in the game.

"Mystic Shadows", I believe, is the music played within Quasispace.

It doesn’t sound like the Quasispace music…

Here is the url to the file http://datascrape.com/arispace.mod

They sound exactly alike over here.

Maybe you're using the remix or something?

Ok so I continued to look through the sound files and I found another file called arispace that was the Quasispace music that  I’m used to.

http://datascrape.com/arispace.ogg is the URL to the file that I just found. It also seems that there are two lbm directories to be found.

The one I found first is in the \uqm-0.5.0-content.zip

The MOD-file is the original Quasispace track. The OGG-file is the remix made for the console version. If you've never played the PC version of SC2, I can see how the MOD would confuse you.

The name is used in more places in the source. I suspect TFB only later decided on the name as used in the game.

I think you're right Meep.
Arispace, could be short for Arilou space, and it could be just a temporary working name.
Things like this happen quite often, I hear for example that some musicians give work titles to their songsand only give them proper titles after they have finished , or progressed significantly.

Actually, "arispace" for QuasiSpace (almost certainly short for "Arilou Space", as Ivan said) shows up in many places in both the data files and the source code, although the source code mentions "QuasiSpace" a lot (the comments may be from the UQM team, though). Similarly, the Kohr-Ah are referred to as "blackur" and "blackurq" in data file names and source code, and the Precursor tug is called the "SIS" (according to Fred, this means "Super-Integrated-Starship"). It's not just the musicians.

However, due to this whole music-writing contest thing, Riku apparently had no idea where in the game his music was going to be used; his tunes are titled "star control2,tune<n>" where n is 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6. Big question: what happened to tune no. 3? Similarly, some other music got shuffled around: the Ilwrath tune is titled "Ur-Quan Kzer-Za", the Kohr-Ah theme is "Slyandro theme" (sic), the Shipyard tune is labelled "Druuge Music", the solar system flight tune is "Configuring Ship" and a lot of tunes have names that don't refer to the game at all (e.g. "Mystic Shadows").
