This game seems REALLY scripted to me, still love it, but still, scripted..

It's not open-ended at all. But it's very open-middled.

There's only one "good" ending, but you have to do most of the sidequests to get it. You can do them whenever you want, in any order and a few of them have multiple solutions.

 You either win or you don't.  The thing is, you can play the meat of the game in any order you want as long as you get it done before you run out of time.

You can win, die in battle, surrender to the Ur-Quan, or
(click to show/hide)
.  There are almost two endings for winning, one which gives you more ships just before the final battle.
