I'll get back to this when Michael commits his revised graphics code.

No, which is why it's not in SVN yet -- we have enough trouble with bugs that are already present without doing sudden major changes to core systems. It's just that the graphics backend in general has been due for rewriting since 0.3 (in order to make fixes to things like Bug #455 not be nightmares) but it's hasn't been a priority for quite a while. So, you mean to say that the Matrox-specific fix is now standad in the latest UQM? I see it's up to 0.6.2 now. :) I'll give it a try and let you know how it looks.
