Title: The game doesn't run (compatibility problem?) Post by: Valaggar on February 06, 2007, 11:08:57 am (Windows XP Professional)
I've just bought a new PC. I've installed UQM on it and it doesn't run (says "The Ur-Quan Masters main executable has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.") - I run the executable and get this error message from Windows. I have a dual core Intel CPU on this PC, maybe it's a compatibility issue? Or anyway, how to get it running? Title: Re: The game doesn't run (compatibility problem?) Post by: Novus on February 06, 2007, 12:55:48 pm Is this 32-bit or 64-bit XP? UQM should generate a log file called stderr.txt in its directory: what does it contain (if it exists)? Can you get any more details from the XP error message dialogue?

stderr.txt: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote The Ur-Quan Masters v0.6.2 (compiled Jan 15 2007 13:56:34) -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY; for details see the included 'COPYING' file. Netplay protocol version 0.3. Requiring remote UQM version 0.5.4. Initializing base SDL functionality. Using SDL version 1.2.12 (compiled with 1.2.8) Title: Re: The game doesn't run (compatibility problem?) Post by: meep-eep on February 11, 2007, 05:37:40 pm It often happens that when new hardware is released, the drivers are still full of bugs. And usually when you buy hardware, the drivers that accompany it are already outdated.
So I suggest you make sure you're using the latest drivers for your hardware, in particular the video drivers. You may also want to try running the game in OpenGL mode if you are now running in "pure mode", or "pure mode" if you're currently using OpenGL mode. I forgot which is the default. Title: Re: The game doesn't run (compatibility problem?) Post by: Valaggar on February 11, 2007, 06:11:27 pm "Pure mode" is default. I tried pure and HQ and it's the same. Trying OpenGL right now. (By the way, since the game doesn't run I have to change the settings via .cfg file. How do you change to OpenGL in the uqm.cfg?)
And thanks, I'm trying to update the drivers. - The driver update doesn't seem to work - still the same problem. - change to OpenGL - how it's done in the .cfg? Title: Re: The game doesn't run (compatibility problem?) Post by: meep-eep on February 11, 2007, 06:44:09 pm The uqm.cfg option is "config.usegl". Or you could pass the "--opengl" parameter to uqm.exe.
Title: Re: The game doesn't run (compatibility problem?) Post by: meep-eep on February 11, 2007, 07:39:12 pm You could try the latest developer snapshot (http://uqm.stack.nl/files/snapshots/). I don't think anything has changed that would be related to your problem, but it's worth a try. The snapshots are built using a different compiler, so the executable will be different.
