Title: remix packages for OSX help?
Post by: dragorim on February 18, 2007, 06:25:08 am
hiya
I'm new here, but a big Starcon fan from way back, and I was wondering if someone out there can please help me to get the game running with the remixes on my macbook as I have lots of homework and just don't want to do it. (the homework)
Also, if you can give me some pointers on getting the ditties to run I would obviously be thankful. although I can not promise you any monetary compensation, there may be a cookie in it for you.
(if you live anywhere near Vancouver island that is, I'm not going to mail it to you)
thanking you in advance
    Bill

p.s. I'll probably thank you after the fact as well.

Hello.

I found these instructions for installing the remix packs:
Quote
Inside the directory where The Ur-Quan Masters content is installed, in the content/packages/ directory, there is a directory 'addons/'. In this directory, you need to create a directory 'uqmremix' and place (do not unzip) all the Remix Add-On pack .zip files there. When you specify the command-line option '--addon uqmremix', the .zip files inside the directory content/packages/addons/uqmremix/ will be included in the game and you will hear all the remixed music instead of the original ones.

If there are any parts to these instructions that confuse you, I would be happy to explain.

Have fun,
Where

Well, the bit where it says to specify the command line: '--addon uqremix'. does that mean I just go to the terminal and type that, or is there a command to open Ur Quan Masters that I'm supposed to type, or is there some kind of terminal inside the game?
this is where I'm confused. I don't get it.
thanks for your help
Cheers

No, it means the Mac OS X terminal. Just go to the terminal, cd to the proper directory, and launch UQM with those options.

So if UQM is located in the directory /blah and the executable is called uqm, you would type:

cd /blah
./uqm --addon uqremix

how do I know what directory the file is in?
If I do a find uqm on the terminal there is nothing there. If I do it in the GUI still nothing
there is a file called The Ur-Quan Masters.app. is uqm in there, in some kind of package contents form?
thak you once again for your help

Cheers

btw, I'm running the OSX package from the downloads section for this, do I have to build from source to get the remixed music?
Cheers, again

Can't all this be handled by the in-game setup system? There's no need to hit the terminal.

Replacing resources while running is basically the only configuration thing that isn't done yet.

Any help? I'm Mac OS X illiterate - I don't know how to add the --addon parameter to the .app in the GUI side, and I don't know how to run the .app in the command line. I can't find the executable inside the .app folder either.

I'm trying to use the Finnish translation with the Mac OS X version.

cheers,

You made it into the .app folder, so you aren't completely terminal illiterate!

The executable is in Contents/MacOS/
To execute the game normally from that directory, you would run
./The\ Ur-Quan\ Masters -n ../Resources/content

It is this command to which you would add  --addon uqmremix

Since this kind of thing keeps coming up, I've opened Bug #1012 (http://bugs.uqm.stack.nl/show_bug.cgi?id=1012) and submitted a patch to allow the game to properly find its content when launched from the Terminal.

If the patch evokes a positive response from The Powers That Be, perhaps this will be fixed in the next release.

I'm completely unfamiliar with Terminal.  I just am confused by how it works.  Hopefully since I figured out DOS on my own I can figure out terminal......

But until then anyone care to give retard proof directions?

I've got SC2/ UQM in a folder in my applications directory called UQM (Duh).  All the files are there. I'm just confused about how the hell the command line interface works on this.

Skip over this if you only want help, as this is completely off topic.
there may be a cookie in it for you.
(if you live anywhere near Vancouver island that is, I'm not going to mail it to you)
you can mail a small cookie in an regular sized envelope, and the postman will deliver it for you.

but when it is received, it will be disintegrated, and covered in ants.  if it is a raisin cookie, the raisins will make it fine, though.

And before you ask, i wasn't the one that mailed the cookie, i was the one that received it. ;D

I'm completely unfamiliar with Terminal.  I just am confused by how it works.  Hopefully since I figured out DOS on my own I can figure out terminal......

DOS and terminal are quite similar, with a few differences. If you figured out DOS, then a quick online guide to the unix shell should get you up to speed.
The main differences are:
/ instead of \ for directory separators
ls instead of dir for seeing what's around you
- instead of / for options

Here's your directions. They assume that you have not changed the name of the application.
Enter the terminal app.
Enter the following commands:
cd /Applications/UQM/The\ Ur-Quan\ Masters.app/Contents

./MacOS/The\ Ur-Quan\ Masters -n Resources/content --addon uqmremix

That should do it. If not, copy and paste the terminal session here.

OK I'ts been a while since I upgraded UQM.  I was running 0.4 with the remix packs working perfectly without having to launch in terminal.
So I've upgraded to 0.6.2 running a PPC on Tiger and noticed that you have to run it in terminal to get the addon remixes to work. I've put the zipped remixes in the proper location and tried running the command line that was  posted on here and got this result.

:~ Dana_E$ /Applications/The\ Ur-Quan\ Masters.app/Contents/MacOS/The\ Ur-Quan\ Masters -n Resources/content --addon uqmremix
The Ur-Quan Masters v0.6.2 (compiled Jan 17 2007 20:06:29)
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY;
for details see the included 'COPYING' file.

Netplay protocol version 0.3. Requiring remote UQM version 0.5.4.
Initializing base SDL functionality.
Using SDL version 1.2.11 (compiled with 1.2.11)
Using config dir '/Users/Dana_E/.uqm/'
Fatal error: Could not find content.

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance!!

That looks like it's not finding the content at all. I think you're going to need to run it from inside the .app directory, not from your home directory. The -n directory is thus looking for Resources/ from wherever you happen to be at the time.  Try doing

 /Applications/The\ Ur-Quan\ Masters.app/Contents/MacOS/The\ Ur-Quan\ Masters -n /Applications/The\ Ur-Quan\ Masters.app/Contents/Resources/content --addon uqmremix

And see if that does you any better.
