There have been polls on what race you like, what race is the most original etc., but what would you like to be? (Earthlings and Syreen included.
Also, don't choose Shofixti if in fact you want to be specifically Tanaka - to personally replenish an entire species, heh heh...)

Every race has it problems.  I voted for Supox because they are a calm race (though plants)

Earthling: Even though they can be rather pathetic, they are still good old humans.
Orz: It would be nice to experience something different some time...

Sorry I've missed part of the story. Is it said somewhere in the game why did they leave, and where?

The Precursors remain one of the most persistent unanswered questions in Star Control (being basically the only one featured in SC1 and 2).

The Slylandro tell you that they left for the galactic core (also the direction indicated by the Rainbow Worlds arrow) aboard great circular battleships (like the Mark 2 from the ending):

and very little from that era has remained intact in our history chants.

Joyous Lifting, who has a better memory than I
recalls that the Shaggy Ones were described as being... worried.
They were always hurrying from place to place, seeking knowledge
as though they were in a desperate search for some important secret

Sullen Plummet remembers that the last time the Shaggy Ones visited our world
they came aboard a great circular starship, one even larger than your own.
They had discovered their Answer and were leaving to go somewhere

though it does not relate to the Shaggy Ones' Question, Answer, Departure Destination.
What my associate communicates is the description of a set of ten worlds, unlike all others.
The Shaggy Ones either discovered these planets or... this is garbled.. assembled them?
We were told the planets were... again this is confusing... organized (?) in some pattern
which in some way alluded to the Shaggy Ones' ultimate fate.
One of the worlds was described as orbiting one of a pair of blue stars not far from here.
Another of these worlds circled a large white sun.
That is all we can remember.

3) Original Ur-Quan - They seem pretty interesting, quite a bit like humanity infact.

Orz: It sounds fun to be Orz, and it makes you really powerful (since the whole "race" is a single being, and you would be that being!)

Chenjesu: Chenjesu are more intelligent than humans. I like having intelligent friends with whom to make intelligent conversation. This would be much more possible among the Chenjesu.

Yehat: More logical than the average Star Control race, but also emotional in a good way - they're one of the most _real_ of the Star Control races. Also, they have a sense of unity sometimes that I can never get with these gosh-darn Earthlings, since they tend to be corrupt and/or stupid so much.

Human (I like me)
Chmmr (bad ass super race)
Yehat (honour and fun-tastic ships)

At least it forces you to choose. Nothing would come of it if everyone picked like 10 or so.

If i could, i would be all the races. They are all so interesting and different and have their own backstory.

I'd be Tanaka/Katana, ofcourse...

Melnorme. I like their information-based economy. As a second choice, I'd go with Arilou. They're highly intelligent, and appear to cherish both science and philosophy. I'd love to hang around Falayaralfali pondering deep questions. The last was a toss-up between Yehat, Umgah and Chenjesu, but I ended up choosing Yehat. I like them; they're one of the most believable and well-developed old Alliance races. Of course, my personal philosophy would probably not be popular in the very warlike Yehat society, but given that they're a spacefaring race that A) uplifted itself, and B) beat us pesky humans to the stars, it stands to reason that their society also has scientists and engineers, and probably holds them in high regard.

Earthling: It took me a moment to choose between Earthling and Syreen, but in the end, I went with us.
Yehat: They're cool. ;)
Slylandro: Of all the races, oddly enough, I feel that they're the most developed, somehow. Life as a Slylandro may not be terribly exciting, but they live a long, long time, and it'd be peaceful.

Runner-ups: Chenjesu, Syreen

I like your thinking my friend. I think I went with the Syreen first, living with nature on a cushy planet, then i cant even remember - maybe i went with chmmr and human.

Arilou - Despite the charming personality about them, you can't help they are delving into some form of Astral Projection, hell the whole idea of "Upper and Lower Dimensions" Originates from the Realms of Astral Projection, I wonder if they were practicing it :?.

Supox - Peaceful guys, and I love their secondary ability (It's good when you can uuuse iiit :) )

Melnorme - Damn thoose guys are funky, and friendly too. I think there's more to them, which is why I like 'em :D.

Precursors, (in their de-evolved form, if sc3 is considered), cuz it's fun to be a wild dumb animal that reproduces all day.

The Umgah, obviously--they do all that genetic experimentation on themselves (at least, I think that part's canon; I may have just extrapolated it as likely) and you can't convince me that's not cool.  Who doesn't want to transform themselves into a Lovecraftian horror? :D

Also, the Melnorme.  I'd love having all that information.  I really wish there'd been more bits of info you could buy (I understand why what you can buy is more or less limited to useful things, gamewise, but for my own curiosity I wish there could have been more).

I almost--almost--said Orz, because it's so tempting, just to know anything else about them.  Then I thought about it a little, and it seems like their home dimension is really boring or unpleasant or something (hence why they like ours) and I'm just not sure.  Besides, it might be horrible to be an Orz.  It's kind of hard to tell, given how little we know about their society.

It's kind of the same thing with the Precursors.  I mean, who knows where they are now, or if there are even any of them left?  Definitely tempting, though.

And with the Chmmr and Chenjesu, too.  Because I really wonder what it would be like to be made out of rock, but it seems like it might get old fast.

...If I could go back and edit my choices, I'd pick either Pkunk or Supox for the third.  They just seem so cool and happy.  Probably Pkunk, because of their connection to various supernatural stuff.

Yes, the Umgah really do that experiments on themselves - they implant as many eyes, mouths and tentacles as they can get. That's why they look like this.

Apropos, the Chenjesu are made of silicon crystals, not rock - those were the Taalo.

Exactly!  Think something would be cool/useful/funny?  In it goes!

I do think it's sort of odd that they all seem to look alike (even the different ones on a single ship!), but then, maybe that's a blueprint they came up with to be optimized for combat/star travel.

Huh.  Well, after a little bit of searching I see I was wrong about what qualifies as a "rock".  Still.  It seems like it would be so different.

What I'd really want to do, though, is spend a little time (a few months?) as every race.  It would be incredibly educational, I think. :D  And then to be able to switch around at will after that (I feel Pkunkish today!).

ETA: Not the Dnyarri, though.  My loathing for them is intense.

I'd be a Chmmr, Earthling or the guy in the back of the ZFP, mainly because he's cool, because he doesn't talk, but he knows stuff you wouldn't know, and you'll never know what he knows :P. He also gets to fire stuff out of his eye, I think.

A male Syreen is just too tempting to pass up!  ;D

I'd have to say though, Druuge are probobly the least appealing race. Furnace Duty doesn't appeal to me for some reason.  :P

Druuge are amongst the best if you're very high on the social ladder. About how the Druuge you sell the Burvixese 'Caster for free becomes.

Optimization? Come on. One Umgah dared the rest to modify themselves to all look alike. Once that was done, they decided it was so funny not being able to tell each other apart, that they kept it that way.

That said, if I were to live my entire life as one particular race(so that I don't feel like I spurned my original race or something), I'd be interested in the Melnorme(information-based society)and Chenjesu(they seem pretty wise, plus it'd be interesting to find out how crystals can be sentient beings).

Zoq, Fot, Pik, because they are three distinct options and I'm allowed to choose up to three. It's a trap for obsessive people, really. :(

Human, cause it's what I'm used to.

Syreen, If most of their women look like Talana, who wouldn't want to be a male in that species?  Not to mention that species being mostly female means fewer guys to compete with for girlfriends.

Arilou, becuase they can use Quasi-Space to get around very quickly.  Being endlessly curious about space would also fit my personality.
