Title: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Captain Smith on January 05, 2003, 10:29:18 am Just thought I'd ask what people usually use to name their ships / captains. I post under "Captain Smith" because that's almost always what I use there...I use "Rodgers" sometimes, old mainstream sci-fi tv watchers will know why on that one.
As far as ship names go, I usually end up using something out of Star Trek like "Excelsior" or "Defiant". Haven't thought of anything really clever yet... What do people here generally use? Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Black Monk on January 05, 2003, 11:21:18 am Currently I'm captain Monk of the ship Nadsmash (Nadsmasher didn't fit).
My fiancee is Zaya with the flagship Estro (in counter-point to my ship). Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: ranmafan on January 05, 2003, 03:42:33 pm No particular captain's name, but my ship is always called the 'Precursor'. :P
Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Scott on January 05, 2003, 07:25:52 pm On this current game it's Captain Solo flying the Falcon... I had a human cruiser captain named Solo too, but, uh, he was... eliminated. *evil laugh*
Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Kloreep on January 05, 2003, 09:19:23 pm Fanfic has ruined me; I'm almost always Paul Ford of the Vindicator. :)
I used to use Precursor a lot too. Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Death 999 on January 05, 2003, 10:47:23 pm This question has been bothering me even before I have gotten the program compiled... The first time I played, with a friend, we were Captain(s?) Kirk of the Enterprise (IIRC, we had to abbreviate). Kind of unoriginal. Second time, I was Captain Nedar of the Executor (one of the officers that vader offed in the Empire Strikes Back - and the super star destroyer. Fitting, because both ships ram the biggest warship around, but not exactly for the same reason).
This time... who knows? I may take one of the character/ship combos from Niven's Known Space... Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Scott on January 06, 2003, 06:05:06 am ***Warning: Intense Star Wars' Geek's Post Below***
The guy in Empire Strikes Back is named Captain Needa, and he was the captain of the Star Destroyer Avenger, the one that lost the Millenium Falcon... Vader chokes him for it. Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: PsiPhi on January 06, 2003, 02:00:34 pm When my friend and I played back in 94, we named our ship the Phoenix. Not only was it symbolic of rebirth after destruction, but we just loved the sound of the name. It seems fitting that the ship ended up going out in a blaze of glory.
-PsiPhi Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Death 999 on January 06, 2003, 08:14:16 pm There are TWO captains killed by Vader, actually. One is done from one ship to another while they're on communication link - the other is in person.
But I don't remember the names. Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Scott on January 06, 2003, 10:15:48 pm Captain Needa is the one done via the communication screen, Admiral Ozzel is the one he kills in person. I told ya I was a dork. ;D
Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Casey Monroe on January 06, 2003, 11:14:00 pm My captain's name changed from game to game, but I always named the ship the "Salvation". It just seemed symbolically appropriate.
Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: griff on January 06, 2003, 11:46:43 pm Captain Cunch
Of the BHL (that's BlackHole Filler, cause there's nothing i love more) Captain Smith or Rodgers or Needa or Kurk or Johnson or how about Captain Cliche. Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: OHHDEAR on January 07, 2003, 01:08:10 am I chose Kirk of the default name Vindicator, but I wish I had chosen Archer...
Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Cerulean on January 07, 2003, 01:49:03 am I am currently captain Cerulean of the New Alliance of Free Stars' flagship Numena.
Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Death 999 on January 07, 2003, 01:51:06 am Are you sure you aren't
Phenomena, captain of the Numena? Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Arrow on January 07, 2003, 07:27:06 am Names change often (right now I'm Captain Kyrin Tileran, the name of one of my fantasy-ish fic characters), but the ship is always the "Ascender".
Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Krulle on January 07, 2003, 02:41:58 pm My first favourite one was:
Cptn: Slavemstr BigB Ship: Dominator Alliance: Empire of Slavemstr BigB And all races still allied with me (okay, the Spathi and the Thraddash were quite willing slaves, but who cares 'bout them anyway?). And during the game i stayed quite harsh and dominating. I just wanted to see, if races like the Pkunk, Shofixti, Yehat,... still were friendly towards me or if it would become more difficult to complete the game. I would have liked to see any difference. Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Chad on January 07, 2003, 08:50:52 pm I've started naming my flagship Serenity and the Captain's name Malcolm.
If anyone gets that reference, I'll be pleasantly surprised ;) Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Nic. on January 07, 2003, 09:34:32 pm Are you putting your saved games "on hiatus" then?? ;)
Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Chad on January 07, 2003, 09:42:07 pm Nice Nic :D Hopefully, not for long :-/
Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Kloreep on January 07, 2003, 11:53:05 pm I recognize it too. You are among sci-fi fans, after all. :)
Serenity's a good a name. Might use it once I get UQM. Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Banukas on January 08, 2003, 06:42:45 am Currently my Grand Admiral has been demoted to Captain Thrawn, but he's still commanding the Chimaera.
Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Matticus on February 03, 2003, 01:58:24 am Some ship names I've used have been mentioned (Salvation, Vindicator, Defiant) but I once used Retribution, as in "something given or demanded by payment, especially punishment."
I just use my own name for the Captain name. Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: GermanNightmare on February 04, 2003, 12:27:56 am Reading all the posts here has been a lot of fun!
Time for me to reveal myself to you as well... -Open Hailing Frequencies- "I am Captain Droege of the Starship Freedom, representing the New Alliance of Free Stars." I w a s thinking about using names from my favorite SciFi movies and shows, but since UQM/SC2 is such a unique universe creating a whole world of its own... you get the picture. ... and I thought it inappropriate to call myself Cpt. Nightmare bringing peace to our allies or Cpt. Dude (my other nickname) delivering nothing but *Peace & Love* and a mean "He stepped over the Line" Frungy-Strike. Let's hear more, plz! Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: unigolyn on February 04, 2003, 01:23:51 am (http://www.hot.ee/unigolyn/princess.gif)
Gopher and Doc are just fine, thanks for asking ;D Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Fotsev on February 05, 2003, 07:11:57 am What about Isaac? ;)
I used Captain "Blye" on the "HMS Bounty" I played it ruthlessly, and didn't bother with lander upgrades. I just burned through crew on the hostile planets. Take off before you lose the last crewmember, and your good to go. ;D Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Death 999 on February 05, 2003, 08:06:45 pm Too bad John Jacob Jingelheimer-Schmidt doesn't fit in the box - we could throw in Cmdr Hayes responding, "That's my name too!"
I like my name for the ship - Orthus - but I need a better captain name. Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: ErekLich on February 05, 2003, 09:27:00 pm I play Capitan Murazor of the Startship Morgul.
If anyone here gets that reference I applaud you. 8) Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Defender on February 05, 2003, 09:39:30 pm i go with my true name as captain, makes me fell apart of it all and as for the ship FREEDOM. this name actually works on 2 levels
1: the marroned people on unzervault wanted more that any thing to go back home, the wanted FREEDOM from being stranded. the ship gave them that. 2: when they reach earth and found out that the war is lost and the people of earth are now encased in a slave shield, FREEDOM takes on a whole new meaning. on another note i dont like the pre named Vindacator as that name implies the castaways new the war was lost and that this new weapon would bring them revenge...blah imho. Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Lukipela on February 07, 2003, 02:26:11 pm Well Morgul is LOTR, so I assume your name is a Ringwraith or some such? Been while since I read the books...
Oh, and I usually play as Lukipela of the Echelon Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: ErekLich on February 07, 2003, 07:12:08 pm Well, you at least know which universe...
As well as the Nazgul bit. ;D seriously though I applaud ya. Just for the enlightenment of all, Morgul is "Dark Sorcery" in Numenorian and Murazor is the name of the Witch-King, i.e. the lead Nazgul. Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Matticus on February 07, 2003, 07:57:17 pm Well if you're gonna go evil, why not make it Morgoth of the Thangorodrim (or if that doesn't fit, the Udun)?
Nice to see fellow Middle-Earth admirers here. =) Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: ErekLich on February 07, 2003, 10:14:37 pm That's a nice idea... but I kind of don't like that idea for a simple reason:
the name Morgoth would represent impressive power. power you don't have. Sure, Murazor was powerful, but he also had severe limitations. You, too, are powerful, but you too have severe limitations. You can only have so many ships, you have only what RUs you can gather, etc. I also like the twisted symbolism of being an emmisary for an intangible force. Murazor was emmisary for Sauron, a spirit who could not take physical form, and in a similar albiet twited way you are the emmisary for the spirit of humanity. Oh, and jic you are wondering I didn't think about all this ahead of time. I noticed the parallels later. Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Lukipela on February 08, 2003, 01:10:25 pm Feel kind of silly for going... hmm where's that from when your little "One ring to bind them all" kind of gives it away anyhow. But I didn't notice that til now
Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: cosumel on February 09, 2003, 06:58:45 am Either Captain Avatar of the Yamato or Captain Aquilon of the Nacre.
Easy points for the first one, bonus points for the second (Ok, Nacre wasn't the ship, but close enough) Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Defender on February 09, 2003, 08:15:12 am the first would be STAR BLAZERS (US) or SPACE BATTLE SHIP YAMATO (japan). as for the second name , dont know.
i miss that cartoon. Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Shiver on February 09, 2003, 08:25:28 am Captain Tristan of the Excalibur. I was feeling chivalrous, I guess.

I thought I was the last!! *sniff* The memory lives on...*sniff* Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Defender on February 11, 2003, 11:49:37 am when i lived in california i used to get up early just to watch star blazers. i loved that ship. every episode i wated until POW they use the WAVE MOTION GUN. man that was truly awesome. why they didnt use it to start with ill never guess. me id start with big guns first and if it twitched blamo shoot it again lol =] and yes good to see another fan. ~DEFIANT
Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Fotsev on February 12, 2003, 05:57:14 am I imagine the same reasoning applied to the crews on VOLTRON waiting until the end to combine the lions/ships into the single VOLTRON robot. ::)
Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Defender on February 12, 2003, 12:27:55 pm did you ever see the other voltron, the one that had the cars planes and oh what was other thingys? i remember they would also combine into 3 seperate types of vechicles. one was on land the other flew and the last one was on the water or something. i also believe they made a cartoon that had both voltrons cats n cars dukeing it out with some one i cant remember it was such a LONG TIME ago. im 28 now geez whare did the time go? =sigh=

There was a VOLTRON where they met and joined forces, but the car one is still my favorite. :) I'm surprised that you remember Star-Blazers being 28. I'm 33 and I was "fairly young" when it came out. ;)
Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Kohr-Ah_Primat on April 10, 2003, 04:46:51 am I usually name the Precursor ship 'Liberator' in regards to your primary mission throughout the whole game. Plus, I imagined what alien races would think of a huge starship that pops into their system called the "Destructor" or "Alien-Eater" or something similar. Sometimes I have fun and name it the 'Hurricane' or even the 'Quan-Killer' but usually it's 'Liberator'. The captain's name is usually 'Rage' though. It works for a male character, but I've always played female characters named that.
Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Death 999 on April 10, 2003, 08:51:16 pm I'm curious -- how do your captain handle Talana, then? Does she keep things as purely professional as possible, or does she, ah, explore alternative lifestyles?
(note, I'm keeping this in the realm of the CHARACTER) Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Kohr-Ah_Primat on April 11, 2003, 04:29:47 am Quote I'm curious -- how do your captain handle Talana, then? Does she keep things as purely professional as possible, or does she, ah, explore alternative lifestyles? (note, I'm keeping this in the realm of the CHARACTER) Oh, well I didn't mean that I assumed the Captain was female-- in fact I never considered that possibility, because I assumed they would've made that obvious immediately. I just meant that I call a lot of my fictional female characters 'Rage' even though I know it would be perfectly serviceable as a male name. Hrmm... 'keeping it strictly professional'? To be honest, I've tested it out once or twice, seeing if the Captain can keep things 'strictly professional', and noting that the only difference this makes is that you never get the Syreen Penetrators (which I never purchase anyways), it's not a big deal. As for 'exploring alternative lifestyles', I am sure Talana wouldn't particularly mind, given her suggestive comment regarding 'making out alright with just us females'. I certainly wouldn't have any issues with a female captain pursuing that avenue of 'exploring alternative lifestyles', especially given that I am bi in real life. Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Ohma on July 25, 2007, 04:20:39 am Captain Needa is the one done via the communication screen, Admiral Ozzel is the one he kills in person. I told ya I was a dork. ;D Actually, just to clarify: Ozzel was choked via screen when the imperial fleet exited hyperspace near Hoth. Needa was the unfortunate captain of the Avenger who "took full responsibility" for losing the Falcon. Piett was the captain of the Executor when it crashed into the DSII (all this is from Wookiepedia). I always name my captain Ohma. I still can't think of a good name for my ship. I've been going for ships from sci-fi 'verses that have been influential to me, so far I've had the Whitestar, the Brittania (the 2 wouldn’t fit), the Macross, the Serenity, and Moya. Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Elvish Pillager on July 25, 2007, 12:21:11 pm Thanks for ressurecting this thread, I like it. I am Captain Evil of the starship Pwn3r1Zer, representing the Empire of Evil!
Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Galactic on July 25, 2007, 12:37:26 pm This is Captain Olli, of the Flagship Mahtilaiva! ( mahtilaiva= mightship)

Works on multiple levels ;) Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Mackus on August 09, 2007, 10:27:41 pm Captain Mackus of Starships:
- Warlock (in both Starcontrol 2 & UQM) - Avenger (shortlive name for UQM) - Slayer (used for long time in uqm) - Lost (present name) from New Alliance of Free Stars Title: Re: Good Captain / Ship Names Post by: Garrett on August 14, 2007, 09:57:30 am I tend to go with the canon choices as much as possible, so I almost always keep the names Zelnick and Vindicator, though occasionally I use my own name and call the ship the Kestrel (Ace Combat 5 reference), Dixon (doesn't refer to anything in particular), or whatever I feel like calling it.
