Title: What smells good? Post by: Shiver on May 26, 2007, 08:17:39 pm Serious question. I got in a friendly argument with a family member and I am now convinced that nothing on this green Earth smells better than vanilla. Prove me wrong.

Post by: Valaggar on May 28, 2007, 02:57:54 pm The only problem is, Shiver wanted something on this green Earth that smells good (by the way, it's rather blue, not green).
And we, the humans, don't have a *smell*, or at least not a good one, because of those Arilou *quickbabies*. Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: Elvish Pillager on May 28, 2007, 08:59:55 pm Yes, we do. It's different, but not gone. We're definitely *happy campers*.
Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: Shiver on May 29, 2007, 12:17:31 am Yes, we do. It's different, but not gone. We're definitely *happy campers*. I'm not an Orz and therefore can't *smell* myself or you guys. So vanilla is still on top. Title: Re: What smells good? Your mom. Hmm, seriously? Raspberry perfume, fresh mown grass, rain, erbal essense, roses, high-end chocolate ... and your mom. Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: xenoclone on May 29, 2007, 09:36:03 am An Oregon forest after the rain and the sun has come out? ;D

Post by: AngusThermopyle on May 30, 2007, 02:20:24 am Better than vanilla? Let's see: sawdust, freshly baked bread, Swiss strawberries, your significant other's perfume (that's very subjective, I know), coffee (mentioned above) just to name a few.
Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: Shiver on May 30, 2007, 05:48:00 pm Alright, I wanted this to be civil but half the posts are trolling me so I'm going after the most agitating responses now.
Quote sawdust Yuck. Come on, really? Quote coffee Coffee sucks. If you need caffeine to stay awake it's because your heart stopped beating 5 years ago. Congrats on joining the ranks of the undead. Quote perfume Perfume is overrated because everyone attaches its scent to the person they're sleeping with. ANYTHING that gets attached to someone you're sleeping with is going to have its perceived value inflated beyond belief. Quote roses Cliched. I'm sure there are better smelling flowers but I'm not a floral person so I can't really say anything for sure. Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: Lukipela on May 30, 2007, 06:46:47 pm Is it just me or are you just getting increasingly vulgar Shiver? This isn't goonland.
Anyhow, I'd have answered that the smell of a person (such as a SO) can be the best, but I see you already covered that with perfume. (Not perfume, not body odour, but just smell. Everyone has one.) Other than that I dunno. I like the smell of oranges, even though I wouldn't say it's the best smell in the world. I also like the smell of burning wood (in small doses). Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: Shiver on May 30, 2007, 08:52:34 pm Is it just me or are you just getting increasingly vulgar Shiver? No, I just said I'm losing my patience with a topic that was supposed to be semi-serious. The best way to show me up in this topic would probably be to track down a aforementioned "floral person" because there's bound to be a flower that just kills everything else mentioned in here. The burning wood suggestion isn't too bad, it's just that most types of wood really don't give off the kind of smell you guys are talking about. Title: Re: What smells good? Maybe people find it hard to dissociate you from the role you are actively playing in the internet thread? Quote The burning wood suggestion isn't too bad, it's just that most types of wood really don't give off the kind of smell you guys are talking about. I'm not sure what you mean. All the woods I've ever burned in a fireplace gives off the same kind of smoke. But then again I've only burned european woods. Maybe redwood smells different? Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: Cedric6014 on May 30, 2007, 09:52:17 pm Coffee sucks. If you need caffeine to stay awake it's because your heart stopped beating 5 years ago. Congrats on joining the ranks of the undead. It still smells damn good though - which is the topic. Cofee might get my vote - oh and maybe molten chocolate. My partner REALLY likes the smell of petrol for some reason. Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: Bluhman on May 31, 2007, 04:38:47 am An apple lotion? I seriously don't know.
Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: Arne on May 31, 2007, 10:38:08 pm I feel really ... spiritual.. or "at ease" when I smell certain kinds of model clay (which I grew up spending tons of time building stuff with). Different brands evoke a different state of mind.
Certain kinds of packaging can do the same, like a freshly opened lego kit/manual. As for food, I sniff empty chocolate wrappings sometimes and reminiscence the time... 4 minutes ago... when I so joyfully enjoyed the chocolate bar itself. Empty pizzaboxes smell nice too. And if you throw them up in the air you can punch a hole in them with your knuckle, or fail, which hurts almost as much as trying to break a wooden pencil between your fingers in 7th grade. Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: Zeep-Eeep on June 01, 2007, 06:57:42 pm Coffee may not be good for you, and I don't like the taste, but good coffee smells awesome.
A past girlfriend of mine used to work in a coffee shop and letmetellyou she smelled heavenly when she got off shift. Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: Lukipela on June 01, 2007, 07:44:37 pm Besides, the question is pretty subjective anyway. Just because Shiver doesn't like coffee doesn't mean someone else can't enjoy it.
Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: countchocula86 on June 04, 2007, 01:42:05 am Freshly baked cinnamon rolls? Has this been covered already? Or when you're browning butter
Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: Cedric6014 on June 04, 2007, 02:15:22 am like a freshly opened lego kit/manual. Oh my, I think we have a winner here. there is nothing like the smell of new lego. Its been at least 15 years since i opened a pack, but the association with smell and funness cannot be beaten. Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: VOiD on June 06, 2007, 03:05:20 pm I live in what you might call an upscale suburban neighbourhood, full of nice gardens and greenery. One of the most popular trees in said gardens is lilac. Just a couple of days ago they burst into bloom, and it's one of the most wonderful smells known to man, at least to this man.
Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: Arael on June 15, 2007, 12:13:32 am Your own, carefully cultivated herb garden (and not of the psychoactive variety, I'm talking spices and the like)
BTW, I hate you for ever mentioning the smell of sawdust and burning wood. You made me go back to designing my new furniture >_< Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: Lukipela on June 15, 2007, 05:57:08 pm Being unknowledgeable in the art of furniture crafting, is it common to burn it? doesn't that defeat the purpose? Or is it the soot stained line you're after?
Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: JHGuitarFreak on June 16, 2007, 01:10:26 am I'd say certain new dvds have a pretty awesome smell.
after living in downtown san diego, I got acclimated to the smell of hot tar and skunk i know it's disgusting, but i have my best childhood memories with that smell around them the interior smell of a very old car new car smell a newly opened pack of legos mozerella cheese a leather mitt or wallet (i especially love the taste too) cherries the exhaust of any off road vehicle freshly cleaned clothing noxema / vicks vaporub greasy tools ok, i can't think of anything more at the moment Title: Re: What smells good? Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: Valaggar on June 17, 2007, 08:25:51 am Air and water have no smell unless something else is dissolved in them.
Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: Uejji on June 19, 2007, 05:10:28 pm While the chemical compound water is an odorless substance, air is a generic name for the collection of gases that happens to be around us, any of which could have an odor.
As for the accepted makeup of the Earth's atmosphere, it does contain several trace elements that do have an odor, such as iodine and ozone. Also, substances cannot be dissolved in a gas. Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: Valaggar on June 19, 2007, 06:31:50 pm I was referring to the air usually found around us (better said in "canonical" form), not the air above a waste dump. Also, trace elements are too dilute to make us consciously sense a smell.
Also, gases can dissolve in gases. Air itself is a solution. See Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solution#Types of solutions). Title: Re: What smells good? Post by: Shiver on June 20, 2007, 03:10:45 am This topic sucks now, I'm gonna try and close it or something.
