The problem is, however, that most of the planets in these systems that have life are less that hospitable. Of course, the only way to upgrade your landers to survive in such conditions, is by gathering biounits and buying those upgrades from the Melnorme. And before you ask, no, you cannot buy them at the starbase, they are exclusive to the Melnorme technological investments.
