Title: YTMND Ports
Post by: RedDaVinci on August 21, 2007, 06:01:40 pm
Hi.

Most of you probably know about www.ytmnd.com, and if so, you're the man now, dog.

Anyway, they have a great assortment of those alien interaction screens of which we're all so very fond, along with the original MOD music. Just do a search for "Star Control II".

I got caught up in the action and decided to attempt my own ports using the old PC version and a DOS emulator. I had great difficulty with anti-aliasing, but I'll try to correct these issues with my new GIF editor. Here are my ports:

Slylandro Probes:

Chmmr:

(I added the "talking electricity" just 'cause it looked cool)

Slylandro (Beta Corvi):

They were all obviously cut down tremendously for download times. Though I don't have professional GIF-producing suites, the freeware seems to do the trick.

Put every line of dialogue into those animated slideshows. That would be impressive.

It sounds good in theory, but I'm certain that after the tremendously long process is complete, and if we ignore the fact that there would be little place to put said voiced animations, I sincerely doubt anybody would care to watch them. It's not like the voice-overs are orgasmic or anything.

Real people don't play Star Control with the voices on. Just put the text in.

I understand where you're coming from, Shiver, but it's still going to be ridiculously long and the animations will take up huge amounts of space. And without the voice acting, there just seems to be less to make it fun to watch.

Cool, now I can experience a long long conversational lull from any computer without having to download uqm!
