Title: Any way to make UQM battles run *slower*? (SC1 speed)
Post by: Sapphon on August 22, 2007, 06:54:01 pm
Hello all,

I've recently downloaded UQM and am really looking forward to playing it (I never played the original Star Control II, so it'll be an exciting time).  I came to know about it by googling Star Control after playing the original on my friend's Sega Genesis.  I've found that, when I am playing Super Melee, I don't do nearly as well when flying (or playing against) the faster, more maneuverable ships as I did on the Genesis, and I am much better with a keyboard than a game controller generally, so the only answer must be that  my twitch gaming isn't up to snuff.  My question to you is, is there a way to force the battles (and only the battles) in UQM to run a bit slower to emulate the pacing of Star Control I?

PS I also found the ship information screens to be one of the most entertaining parts of Star Control I, but I can't find any in UQM; am I sadly correct in thinking that copyright law prevents their inclusion in UQM?

You can't slow down the game without rebuilding the game from source, in which case, it's as easy as changing BATTLE_FRAME_RATE to something else.
And unless I'm mistaken, it was only the Genesis version of SC1 that was slow. Accolade didn't give TFB enough time to optimise it.

The PC version of SC2 didn't have any ship information screens. The 3DO version had video segments instead (which we can't use, due to copyright issues).
Copyright shouldn't be a problem for the SC1 images, but SC2 contains some new ships for which no ship information screens exist.
But Amiga_Nut is working on new ship spins (see elsewhere on this board), on which we will overlay ship statistics. They're just not there yet.
Also, "most entertaining parts"?

Yeah, they were full of jokes.

Really? I've never even heard of these screens.

SC1 ship info pics (mouse-over for overlay) in PoNaF SC1 database (http://starcontrol.classicgaming.gamespy.com/sc1/).

I can make screens like the sc1 ones but I dont know if my schedule can fit uqm's schedule. If they do go for it, it'd be 320x200 too?

I forgot to mention I can make the screens hand drawn and 256 colors too.

The only pic I've got handy is this:

mind you that that pic was for my own embellished sc2 fan art project.
