Title: SC-like shooter Post by: malsumis on December 29, 2007, 10:55:00 pm It's my fist post here, so "Hi everybody!" :)
Well, the topic may be a bit confusing. A few years ago I played a freeware linux game largely resembling StarControl, but it was something like a shooter with elements of adventure. Well, there were missions and all, but mostly side scrolling shooting. And no, it's not UQM ;) Like in SC2 you would start your adventure in "Sol" solar system. Well, I searched high and low for this gem for a few years, and I still can't find it. In fact, that's how I got hooked to SC2/UQM 1,5 years ago, through the "Sol" keyword. So I thought: maybe someone on these boards heard something about such game. Any info apreciated. Title: Re: SC-like shooter Post by: meep-eep on December 30, 2007, 03:19:05 am That's not really much to go on. Do you remember anything else about this game?
Title: Re: SC-like shooter Post by: Novus on December 30, 2007, 03:18:37 pm While "freeware" and "Linux" narrows it down quite a bit (from the ridiculous amount of games released for DOS or Windows), I'd suggest trying to remember keywords that are easy to search for, such as names of places or characters unique to the game ("Sol" isn't much help). A more detailed description of the gameplay would probably also help. The Linux Game Tome (http://www.happypenguin.org/) contains lots of Linux games; you may find what you're looking for there.
Title: Re: SC-like shooter Post by: Megagun on January 01, 2008, 03:18:37 pm The only things that come to mind are Tyrian and Abuse, but judging from your description, you mean neither (Abuse is nothing like UQM at all, and Tyrian is a Vertical shooter without 'optional' missions).
Are you sure it's a sidescroller though? No 'top down' game with (perhaps) multiple scrolling directions or non-sidescrolling direction? Are you sure it's for Linux, too? Since I can remember lots of games that are not for windows, like Star Control , and having multiple scrolling directions (Wazzal, Solar Winds, ...) Although I do remember this specific horizontal scrolling spaceshooter with Anime-styled characters and dialogues placed at the top of the screen, with a story about some weapons manufacturing corporation that took over earth or something... I know someone wanted to port that over to the GP2x, so it's Linux and free for sure. Maybe you can find it over at reloaded.org or over at the Home of the Underdogs? But I think I recall it being featured at least once over at the Linux Game Tome, too... I bet though that if someone remembers some game which had parts of what I described in the previous paragraph, we'll find the game you are looking for in no time. :) EDIT: not the game I was thinking of myself up there, but I found http://rrgbis.sourceforge.net/index.php in my 'research'.. Not sure what it is exactly, but maybe the thing you're looking for. EDIT: found the game I was thinking of. It's called Project:Starfighter. http://happypenguin.org/show?Project%3A%20Starfighter and http://www.parallelrealities.co.uk/starfighter.php Title: Re: SC-like shooter Post by: Elvish Pillager on January 01, 2008, 09:08:59 pm EDIT: found the game I was thinking of. It's called Project:Starfighter. http://happypenguin.org/show?Project%3A%20Starfighter and http://www.parallelrealities.co.uk/starfighter.php But you start in Spirit in that game...
