Title: As if made for SC2
Post by: meep-eep on January 04, 2008, 05:04:54 pm
I recently came across this page (http://www.darkroastedblend.com/2007/11/retro-future-to-stars.html). It contains a bunch of old "retro-futuristic" images, some of which remind me of SC2 a lot.

Something which could have been the inside of a Syreen ship.

Something which could have been a Chmmr city.

An Arilou Skiff:

Tractors on the moon, moving around dirt?

The same composition as the Syreen image from SC1.

And something similar.

On a moon orbiting a slave-shielded world.

Those are very amazing images; they're very colorful, and they also remind me of events from Star Control II.  Has anyone ever seen the cover art for the Sega Genesis version?

The cover was made by Boris Vallejo, a very popular and highly-skilled artist.  When they do start working on the next Star Control game, it would be cool if Boris could return and make more Star Control art.

There was a poster of that too. See here (http://starcontrol.classicgaming.gamespy.com/collecting/page2.shtml).

And from Fred Ford:
Quote
This was the box-cover for the Genesis version of Star Control I. As we were porting the PC version to the Genesis, Accolade came to us and said, "We got an artist to do the Genesis cover. What would you like him to do?" Not knowing (unless we were psychic) that it was Boris, we said, "Well, just have him make the claw cooler." And Accolade said, "Uh, Okay." It was only much later and to our dismay that we discovered the opportunity that had been lost.

I love that retro sci-fi look from the 1950s. Mmm, makes me want to play some Fallout.

Although this image would not count as "retro-futuristic", It still makes me think of Star Control, even though the weapons system is a beam rather than a blaster.

A druuge ship attacking Earth:

That's the GDI Ion Cannon concept at the time for a potential C&C3 game, which eventually became Tiberium Wars.

That thing reminds me of the Zeus cannon from the Final Fantasy film.

I ran into that retro scifi art site a while ago, very nice stuff! I didn't make the SC connection though. It would be fun to illustrate SC in that style.
