Title: New ways to play
Post by: human fluid sack on January 12, 2008, 07:40:39 am
Does anyone have any interesting ways to play the game?

I've done "be the bad guy" and "bounty hunter."  I've tried not visiting the starbase, but I'm not quite good enough at melee against the probes to pull it off (mainly I have a problem with running into the planet  ::)).

Any other ideas?

the first time I played I've tried to win the game killing all kohr-ah...I've killed thousand of them but their circle was always the same ;)

You can try a speed run, although that wouldnt really be that much fun ( I dont think, anyways)

Or you could try playing with only using your main ship for fights (or conversely using only escort ships to fight)

Speed run doesn't sound fun to me either, although I might do it sometime.

The other two are great suggestions, but I've done them already.  Flagship only is obviously easy once you get  the upgrades, escorts only is different since you get to deck out the flagship with all crew pods (except a fuel tank obviously).  A fleet of Orz and/or Utwig backed by lots of crew pods can do alot of damage.  Of course, since you can avoid almost any fights you want to, that makes it easy also.

You could reverse the order you do quests. Instead of starting with the nearby systems, try moving further out.

You could install a language pack (http://uqm.stack.nl/wiki/Translations#Translation_projects), and play the game in eg. Russian.

Hard mode- Use only Earthling fleets, and don't gain any help from Fwiffo nor any other aissists (unless obligated through storyline). No Lander upgrades allowed, or to be used (keep to original behavior as if the upgrades never existed).

This can also be an idea for modding. Decide what to upgrade, Tech for lander is cheaper than ship upgrades, etc.

Also nicknamed masochist mode.

I did a thread on this once but now I'm too lazy to link it here. To be honest, Star Control 2 doesn't provide too much of a different experience when you force new rules upon yourself. The only variant people should really try is 'no flagship in combat' because the escorts are way more fun. I'm hoping Nicholai finishes his singleplayer mod someday soon.

There's an idea.  Is there one for French?  I took that in high school.

Another idea: I bet you could complete the game without mining (other getting the radioactives for the starbase), hunting, or destroying any ships that it isn't absolutely necessary to.

Wasn't there someone who played the game without visiting starbase? IIRC you can't actually finish the game this way, but you can finish most quests.

Ive never played the game using the Flagship for combat. I only ever use the escorts. That might be fun to try some time

I'm not aware of any translation projects that aren't listed on that page.

Yes, Deep-Jiffa did iirc, and fOSSiL did too, and I think there was someone else. You can actually finish the game like this since fOSSiL made a few fixes.

For most of us, I suspect, it wouldn't make a scrap of difference what language it was in as we all know where everything is anyway and what they say.

Maybe I'll try the escorts only thing, but I just know the story too well that I struggle to squeeze any more enjoyment out of that drained carcass of a game.

When is that dude gonna finish that mod thing? I might disappear for a year and reappear to discover that a playable fan-made adaption actually exists (sorry too lazy and incompetent to actually do this myself).

Have a good weekend everyone!

The greatest problem with doing it yourself also is, that you know all the stuff beforehand too and therefore get less fun out of it, as when someone else had done it.

Which mod?

Id love to see  randomized version of the game

Could you link to this? From the discussions I found/recall it seems like the game tilts after you free the CHMMR if you haven't gone to starbase.

Bug 592 (http://bugs.uqm.stack.nl/show_bug.cgi?id=592), fixed over 2 years ago. The fix is to have the Chmmr dump you near Earth instead of at the starbase.

Pardon me if this is redundant by now, but how is it possible to finish the game?

  • Withtout mining, you can't get flagship upgrades, which mean you'll always be at 50 crew and 60 fuel.
  • How would you get more fuel? Bio-data and slave trades? (after acquiring ships from other races)
  • You could still talk to the Mycon/Arilou/Umgah, which let you (eventually) obtain the Sun Staff; the Bomb could be traded for (or wait for the Korh-Ah to run rampant), the Talking Pet can be optional (I forget if it's a prequisite for the crystal amps), but the crystal amps require the Chmmr to be active?

Flagship upgrades aren't much use anyway (I usually use escort ships for all combat). As you mention, you can get extra crew from other races and sell them as slaves for fuel or gather bio-data and Rainbow World co-ordinates for fuel. In an emergency, you can sell parts of your flagship for fuel, too.

You need the Talking Pet at the end anyway, but that's no problem. None of the stuff you need to get requires you to visit the Earth Starbase. The only real change in UQM is that the Chmmr don't take you back to the Starbase to install the crystal amps (which used to crash the game if you hadn't been to the Starbase).

I was thinking more like fuel tank upgrades for convenience's sake. And you can't sell parts of your ship if you don't enter the starbase...

I presume the first thing you do after entering Sol is to run to the Centauri system?

You do start with some thrusters and turning jets, but it's best if you can keep them. I'd head somewhere with life early, so you have credit.

You will need to call the Melnorme a lot, yes. Also note that they provide fuel for parts of your ship if you don't have credits. That said, selling thrusters is not a good idea if you can't get them back. However, having a gun on your flagship is unnecessary.
